The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

Recommended Posts

Thanks 40044, I presume the plan is to use the 59/2s on the FF circuit replacing 60s? Is that because there is less work for the 59s in the Mendips?

Presumably. 59s have been trialled/half-heartedly used on these trains a few times over the last 2 years. 59202 failed this morning and was replaced by.... 60011!

Thanks 40044, oh dear still they don't fail as much as 60s! Hopefully those 60s that get overhauled will have higher reliability figures.

Nice photo of 099 Roman.

60096 appeared on the Dee Marsh steel tonight, only the second 60 this year I believe,

The photos were taken from a public footpath

I saw a 60 heading oil tankers out of Nottingham on the Newark line yesterday afternoon at about 4.30. I think it was 60015 but I'm not sure about it because I was on a bus heading to Colwick racecourse at the time.

It seems weard having filmed and photographed the very first Class 60's to visit North Wales and be seen in Penmaenmawr quarry yard, only to read on here they are going. Twenty years isn't a good innings for expensive locos.

I suppose twenty years isn't bad going for a specification that the then customer didn't really want. BR would have been much happier buying class 59s but that wasn't considered a politically expedient option at the time even though hindsight proves that it may well have been the correct decision.

DBS are creating 'Super 60s' although the overhaul of the first loco, 60007, has yet to be completed

I love this phrase "super 60" - 007 is (slowly) being refurbed. AFAIK its not having an additional engine or another set of turbos fitted so I cant see whats so super about it!

Just a 60 (hopefully) getting what they desperately needed - some TLC. Lets hope its not another fantastic DB 'p.o.t.o.s' job like they did with certain type threes, one sitting in a scrapyard about two miles from me as we speak..........

Much froth was had on Thursday 28th as Army 60040 worked 6C02 Crewe-Carlisle and 6K05 return (passing within 30 feet of my back door). My local gen-group had reports every 10 mins, or so it seemed! Pity I couldn't arrange my work around getting a phot of it. :(

Any date as to when 007 will be in traffic?

Cheers,

Mick

Nice one Dave! After yesterday's trip to Carlisle, 60040 is now at Westbury. Hopefully it'll do an engineers or stone train over the next few days. I would like the chance to photograph it in the sun actually on a train, as the weather seems to be rather dull everytime it passes me. Rather more satisfying to see it on a train than parked up like this in 2008 at Merehead

Yesterday's local tugs to Westerleigh were 60074 and 60013.

60074 is on 6E41 Westerleigh - Lindsey passing Coaley

60013 is on 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh, also passing Coaley about 1 minute later

60040 or 60099 would be welcome on the Murcos!

cheers

Today 60040 made its way to Newport and back from Westbury. After what I said the other day, it was great to get a shot in the sun!

Here it is working 6C41 Newport ADJ - Westbury near Claverton, still looking pretty tidy. There was a huge train of Coalfish in tow!
