The 2mmSA Further North roadshow attended Model Rail Scotland last weekend:

The apres-ski in the Bon Accord bar on Saturday included 2mm modellers from southern climes - John Aldrick from Leeds and Peter Kirmond from Gloucester who were in town to operate Peter's O scale "Laramie" roundhouse layout, where the locos are longer than some 2mm layouts. Simon, Alisdair, Martin, Richard and Jim from the Forth and Clyde group were there to listen and learn, in particular that it's important that drivers know where the brake is as well as the regulator on a layout with a turntable pit.

Not so much a layout but I was at the Brisbane Train Show this weekend demonstrating soldering - and for the first time all I had was 2mm gauge (and mostly 2mm scale) stuff to show off.  The 4F isn’t 1:152 - it was professionally regauged by @queensquare and will be most valuable in having us test our track work - we know the loco won’t be the problem if it doesn’t run!

Next year we hope to take a layout!

Had a very pleasant weekend at Havenstreet on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Their first model railway event seemed to go very well for them, so it could become an annual event.

Set up in the "Freshwater Room" at Havenstreet. Note the real carriage through the window.freshwater_at_Havenstreet.jpg.4788e05ad20da4c67490efa57ce556ce.jpg

As a plus, I was allowed into the loco shed to see the kit of parts that is No. 8 "Freshwater" which is approaching completion of its latest overhaul.

I also managed to ride the Drewry rail car, that once travelled up and down Ryde Pier.

Reg Dear's wonderful 2mm Finescale model of Ventnor was on show in its display case in the "Toy Story" "Train Story" museum.

Well, it was quite a 2mm gathering at Stoke Mandeville Stadium this weekend. Here is the main line-up, right to left: Kyle, Freshwater, Bath Engine Sheds and the 2mm Road Show.

Railex2023.jpg.ab4295bf2e4f824f32339ea953b3ce75.jpg

Behind us was Modbury, and (despite being N gauge) a worthy addition to our enclave, Penworth:

Penworth.jpg.77fa9afa1d443ccddf2ee9ab0efba9f0.jpg

The buildings and landscape were superb.

Mean while, the Freshwater passenger train strayed about as far away as it could get from the Isle of Wight and still remain in the UK:

...meanwhile a 27 was seen heading South after crossing the Solent.

Great show and good to be part of the 2mm gathering.

Not an exhibition as such - just our AG meeting yesterday.  Exhibition with our new layout in November.

The loco is slightly incongruous and also the wrong gauge but we thought it appropriate for the photo.

The story should be in the next newsletter.

Just recovering from the journey back from the Bala show with Drws y Nant. It was a fascinating and totally different weekend.

Michael and I started early from Surrey and took a circuitous route via Penmaenpool for lunch at the George III, Dolgoch and Abergynolwyn then Drws y Nant before unloading at the show.

Although not the busiest show, this was around 10 miles from the actual location of Drws y Nant, so masses of local knowledge was absorbed during the show. We also debuted the new back scene which was specially printed from a photo of the actual location taken a few years back.

PXL_20230917_125045094_MP.jpg.40956a61049712ea6f422f1cb42e6c17.jpg

We met John Roberts who was a signalman on the line and is responsible for more photos of the location than most. His reaction to the layout and knowledge of the place was fantastic.

The Bala Lake Railway Society who put on the show held a social evening starting with a special train and a barbeque. For the historians, Julian Birley, vice President of the society had his Bentley present which used to belong to the famous railway photographer Ivo Peters.

PXL_20230916_153622975_MP.jpg.de43f47b86f4fe8ececb4ad44dc6df0b.jpg

Various artifacts of Drws were shared with us including one of the tablets.

PXL_20230916_133453251_MP.jpg.9d4fd1ffc9df1e319c06e04d2a1a4dff.jpg

On the Sunday, we were visited by the Roberts family who own the farm adjacent to the location and now own the signalman's cottage modelled on the layout. We had accidentally met a couple of them whilst I was showing the site to Michael and so we invited them to the show. The fact that 6 of them from 2 generations came along to see it and left fascinated was a huge compliment.

And finally, we were visited by a chap who started talking knowledgeably as a friend of John Roberts, but turned out to be Martin Williams who wrote the main book I had used as the main source of images to build the layout.

Many other locals shared their memories of the station, and for us operating the layout this was hugely absorbing. We came away from the show with more knowledge and appreciation for those involved, along with some subtle ideas for further development with the layout.

As Nigel said this was a very special weekend spent with some super people from the Bala Lake Railway everything a preservation society should be.

The layout was so well received and as usual worked brilliantly a credit to Nigel’s craftsmanship.

so next stop Aldershot !

happy modelling

Michael

The Scalefour Society are looking forward to welcoming the 2mm Association and Guest Layouts, Tucking Mill/William Smith’s Wharf and An Clar, to Scaleforum this coming weekend, 23/24 September at Cressex School, High Wycombe. They will be ably supported by 10 P4 layouts and plenty of trade and demonstration support.

Am I right in thinking that's an LSWR (or WSLR) Adams 415? If so I'd be grateful for some info on the chassis and mechanism used if possible . Richard

Yes it's an Adams radial tank. Built for @queensquare by John Greenwood.

John Greenwood built it and it’s on loan to the WSLR. It’s scratchbuilt with a 7mm coreless motor and 36:1 gear reduction.

I’ve done a few minor mods to it which have allowed me to get a Zimo chip and stay alive in the bunker which have transformed running from very good to exceptional.

I will take a couple of pictures with the lid off when I get a minute.

A bit off topic maybe, a poor photo  and a larger scale than 2mm/ft, but it's Adams related. Saw the Adams T3 at Swanage today. Wow!

Penworth station and goods yard at the recent Christchurch MRC Exhibition. Describes itself as 'Pendonesque' and I can understand why, but this is N Gauge. Had the camera and lens with me so decided to take a few photos of the yard and wagons while waiting for a train, nearly a century ago...

Well at the other end of the country we had a double header of Modbury and Drws-y-Nant at the Portsmouth Show organised by the South Hants MRC.

ModburyPortsmouth.jpg.c1fc516ece492bdafc69df34b1ecf2a2.jpg

Ian and Steve were having a good show with Modbury.

DrwsPortsmouth.jpg.79126a8a6667971961cdec3c78eec3ae.jpg

While on Drws, Steve Dunkeyson was getting to grips with the DCC control while Michael engaged with a young visitor fascinated by the vehicles.

A very good one day show, a number of folk made themselves known, which is always part of the fun aspect of exhibitions. The 2mm Roadshow was also present with Jerry and Paula holding fort with a regular flow of visitors.

All the layouts were of a high standard, but the 2mm presence was certainly significant with 2 out of 12.
