Rob - whose unit is that in your avatar, please? I recognise it, but can't quite place it.

South West container haulier George Taylor, they finished up last year after 100 years. I worked for them a few years ago, the unit in question was the last ERF they bought,

hi, great thread, really enjoying everyones efforts with the vehicles.

I have a question.

has anybody used the Kentoys trucks ?

or are they to big.

I have a couple that look about right for oo gauge.

Your thoughts would be welcome

Thanks in advance

The 'Automaxx' or 'Joycity' 1.72 series of trucks sit well with 1.76 scale vehicles ( tho I've never measured them) and are well detailed and very cheap on ebay and in the bargain shops. These are the older MAN 's ( back row modded ) but they also do current Scanias and Mercs. This model MAN F200 would look ok on a 90's layout and would be easy to make into an ERF !

Thanks jcb

More work on metrobuses. This time an abs (ex mbc) mk2. This one came with the full width hopper windows which research shows were less common so they will be replaced.

Hi all

As a distraction from layout building (see my layout thread) I have been working on these 4

sherpas.jpg

Spot the difference! 2 of them have been assembled as the kit comes while the other 2 have had the doors carefully cut out and remounted to represent the sliding type as used by the post office

Cheers

Hi All

more progress on my small fleet of Sherpa's Didnt realise that I was being quite patriotic with the colours until after they were painted!

Jim, they are shaping-up very tidily indeed! A true staple of the New Street scene - and a locally patriotic one to boot, built at Drews Lane next door to The Met!

If you don't mind me saying though, do you intend to respace the rear wheels, the shot here http://www.aronline.co.uk/images/lcvroyalmail_12.jpg suggests they were wider tracking than the models appear...

(I know I don't need to duck, because here's a guy striving for realism!)

Good call, I'll have a look.

The type you linked to is a short lived version with bumper mounted lights as per the original ones but the later body style. I want to get a few more sherpas and that version is on my list.

Hi Jim,

How about painting the white sherpa in the livery of Home Express, the one with the three flying ducks on the side ?

I can remember them delivering for littlewoods catalogue in the 80's

Al

Home Express were known as Home Delivery Services until the mid-nineties when the name changed. The livery was white with the branding in black on the side. Their standard van was the Bedford CF until they changed to Sherpas in the mid-eighties, probably when CF production ceased.

I'll see what i can find on Home Delivery Services. I remember the White arrow van turning up a lot - Mk2 LWB transit without the heavy rear axle and with sliding drivers doors

Hi All

Just drawing a line under my current Sherpa project. They have been weathered and the glazing, drivers and mirrors fitted - just registration plates to go.

Next up as a vehicles project is these

transits-to-do.jpg

I already have some Mk1 transits and a couple of Mk3's but what I really need is mk2's. Luckily ABS streetscenes sell their mk2 nose casting as a spare so these 4 are for the chop!

Pleased to hear of the castings being available to convert. I will have to get some too.

Here is the Capri, turned down wheels and lowered.

Cheers Peter.

Was that a straight repaint of the Oxford Capri? Or did you strip it down and then repaint it?

I ask because I've got one and the paint is hiding the grille detail.

Hi All

I have been very kindly given an Oxford Ford Consul. A spot of research shows that these were re-named into the Ford Granada in late 1975.

The Mk2 granada continued in production until 1985 which would make them very ideal for my layout. Wiki mentions that they had a mild facelift at some point so the question is, can I convert the Consul into a mid 80's granada or was the 'mild' facelift a bit more drastic?

Cheers

The Mk 2 was more 'angular' than the Mk 1/Consul, the Mk 1 looked better though...

Edit - no reason why you couldn't have a battered Consul/Mk1 on the layout, different coloured wing and plenty of rust.

The Mk.1 & Mk.2 Granada share much of the same structure, but the front and rear of the saloons had all of the outer panels replaced. I think the rear doors may have been reskinned, at least partially as the slight curve up at the back disappeared, but not the front ones. The reverse sculptured lower fold was cleverly hidden by broad plastic rubbing strips that completely changed their character and a minor change in the front screen surround eliminated the rounded lower corners, adding to the 'square rigged' restyle. The estate was given a much less extensive facelift, as the rear panelwork was untouched, though bumpers, rubbing strips and simpler trim were in the new style.

The Oxford Consul GT/Granada could be reworked with a lot of filler, but the real problem will be the back screen and pillars. Being the GT it has the Granada style grille rather than the Consul one, (Consul shown here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Granada_%28Europe%29 ) so it will pass as a Granada.

Thanks chaps. Ill stick with the mk1 Granada for now then.

A little rant but why do the likes of oxford insist on using oversized rubber tyres? Why not just solid plastic wheels (most rims seem to be bespoke anyway? Their models have painted headlights, why the insistence on rubber tyres.

Cheers

Jim,

I've just seen the posts about the Consul / Mark 1 Granada and Mark 2 Granada.

Going by what I have seen and read, the Consul / Marl 1 was in reality the Consul, and the use of the Granada name was to bring Britain in line with Europe. The Mark 1 Granada was of a similar "Coke Bottle" design to the Cortina Mark 3, The Mark 2 was a more up dated model, with straighter panel lines, the front grille was shaped to be aerodynamically stable at speed, and the engines changed from the older series, with the 3 litre block to a newer more powerful series, with a 2.8 litre block.

I am looking at chopping the Oxford Escort and making a Granada Mark 2, as the front end and rear lights are the same.

This website might be a help - http://www.ford-granadaguild.org.uk/

Going by what I have seen and read, the Consul / Marl 1 was in reality the Consul, and the use of the Granada name was to bring Britain in line with Europe.

The Consul was the base model, but the Granada name was used from the start for the more upmarket versions (there were some objections about use of the Granada name from Granada TV just before introduction, I believe). In the UK they used the 2.0 V4 or 2.5 or 3.0 V6 from the previous Mk.IV Zephyr/Zodiacs, but the 2.0 V4 was replaced with the 'Pinto' engine also used in the Cortina/Taunus when the Mk.1 was facelifted in 1974.The old Ford Consul had died out when the Mk.II Zephyr/Zodiac range was introduced in 1962, though the name was used a little longer in conjunction with the name Classic (to 1963) and Cortina (to 1964), so it was a new use of the name in 1972.

The Mark 1 Granada was of a similar "Coke Bottle" design to the Cortina Mark 3.

Not really a proper 'coke bottle'. There was only a small upward reverse curve at the rear of the back doors and the waist didn't pinch in at all. There was a coupe version which had a more 'coke-bottle' rising waist, but that wasn't sold in the UK. When the Ghia coupe (the only coupe version sold here) appeared in 1974 it had a restyled, angled design.

I am looking at chopping the Oxford Escort and making a Granada Mark 2, as the front end and rear lights are the same.

The original Mk.2 rear lights are quite different, with a smooth surface and the orange and clear lights above the red lights. This was altered in 1982 to a similar pattern to the Mk.3 Escort, but at the same time the front grille was changed to have just a few very deep slats. The Orion (Escort saloon) followed this revised pattern, but the Escort itself never did (apart from the sporting RS1600i). The other thing to remember is that the Granada is quite a bit wider than an Escort!
