Guest Max Stafford
What a hellfire selection, there's so many scenes there that would be perfectly visible from my upstairs window if my house was a Tardis. I can't summon up sufficient superlatives for this collection! B) Dave.

'CHARD
'Chard - do you like this? This looks like a new collection that's not been up long on Fotopic - most photos only have a couple of views. Mike Delamar has already flagged the diesel photos, but there are some superb steam ones as well. I'm only part way through the collection, but I thought you might like to have a look yourself. And here's me thinking I was going to get a day's work done! This looks like an incredible collection, and the pic you've linked to shows the check-rails on the ascent from Riccarton more clearly than I've seen before. I'm amazed and delighted that we keep getting these new collections, great spot - cheers! Edited January 4, 2012 by 'CHARD
Guest Max Stafford
A superb collection Peter and worth the look for the Kingmoor shots alone - oh, what glories mere yards outside my door then...! Those Riccarton shots are amazing too. No date given, but I'd guess 1965 from the general context of the collection. Dave.
'CHARD
Yep, I'd go along with that assessment. From the set up of the collection this was a photographer on a mission to record different locos at a decent time before the end, and in that context the very ordinariness/ normality of the subjects resonates. It never ceases to amaze me how much ex-LMS (and other) motive power was going about its normal business in my birth year! So a big thanks to 'CHARD's ma'n'pa for introducing me to traffic in time to actually have a footplate experience at 9H just before the end, aged not yet three

'CHARD
Neil, welcome to this most esteemed thread and thanks for those links (see, I am actually working really, not scanning those galleries ). Your favourite is a good one of Prince P and I must say I've not come across many of her with the cab diagonal stripe, presumably because she only carried it for a relatively short period. Or have I just not noticed...? The vertical smoke blast from the cartrain's inside loco is awesome, I'm trying to work out what cars they'll be, Anglias and MkI Cortinas probably... EDIT: Fifers do very well out of this collection: this is an incredibly evocative image from the train of what I reckon is approaching Burntisland, does anyone recognise the classic Fife saloon bar? http://georgestrainp.../p64137221.html Was there a photographer alive who wasn't at Hawick to capture Blue Peter? http://georgestrainp.../p64136956.html Were the GUVs full of cars, I wonder? 61029 at Riccarton: http://georgestrainpics.fotopic.net/p64137049.html

Hi Chard A small number of the ScR ex LNER A3 and A4s had the diagonal yellow line applied around 1964, 60027 being another I recall. During 64/65 it was still possible to see A3s arriving at Waverley. I still clearly recall seeing A3s arriving on the Anglo-Scottish car carrier service during 1964 which was usually worked by an ER A3. Sadly I did not own a camera at that time however it is great to see some really good photos taken during that period through these web sites. regards Neil
'CHARD
Oh Boy: http://georgestrainp.../p64089884.html and Leith Central, with DMUs and Jockoes aplenty: http://georgestrainp.../p64089868.html - is that a Clayton on the extreme right of shot? 'CHARD
Yep, that's a Clayton. It's a pyre of Claytons! EDIT : And elsewhere in web-land, this contemporary collection has appeared, the picture at the end of this link (all uncaptioned) I think being the southern portal of Bowshank tunnel, and how very unusual it is, wonder when all that austerity strengthening work was carried out... http://jonathanmcgur.../p64113955.html Another edit to thank PH for PM-ing me this: http://georgestrainpics.fotopic.net/p64136962.html - Anglias and Corsairs, the Anglia Estate looks very high spec, what was the equivalent of Ghia? 'CHARD
Nice succinct history of the Langholm Railway at the end of this link, which for some reason I've not seen before. The page features one of Bruce Mac's atmospheric shots of a Class 20 crossing the A7 near the very end, of both the line and its existence... http://www.langholm-....asp?PageID=213 And here: http://www.erichall.eu/2007s070.html some reflections of a different kind... and if you don't wish to read the entire history of the settlement at Riccarton, here's the first picture I've seen which shows the railway village at its 'height' of 37 premises: http://www.erichall.eu/images/0807/0807186.jpg
millerhillboy
This one is my favourite albeit taken at Waverley http://georgestrainp.../p64136971.html Absolutely love that picture. Was never old enough to see such things but doesn't stop me trying to model them. Hope you don't mind me posting this of PP in her cab stripe guise. 60100 her fellow 64A straggler also had the yellow stripe in later life. I'm not if '41 got it or not though. What platform is Palatine standing at in the picture. Is it one of the round the back platforms, 8 or something these days?
millerhillboy
Leith Central, with DMUs and Jockoes aplenty: http://georgestrainp.../p64089868.html Impeccably timed posting with pictures of Edinburgh 101's or should I say met-cams' 'Chard. Currently got green Farish on WB getting attention including SC numbers etc In that picture does anyone know if that is an overhead warning panel on the front glass of the unit and if so is it just the one? Can anyone confirm if this was the norm for units of this era? Thanks CJ

'CHARD' The word your looking for is Deluxe - which meant 2 tone paint, more chrome trim & a heater . Anglia Deluxes weren't necessarily two-tone, although a lot of the estates seemed to be. In modern money it would be something like an LX - one up from the entry level and with an acceptable level of creature comfort. As Stewart says, the 'Standard' (base) Anglia didnt even have a heater as standard. The saloon in front of it is actually the higher spec - it's a Super, and would have had the 1200cc engine as standard vice the 997. It has even more chrome - there's a twin strip of it embracing the bodyside 'flash'. It looks like it's Ermine White and Dragoon Red, like my first car
