Hi Mike,

Missed you by a day - again!!! Looks like Andy P and I also missed each other at Derby today, a really great show I thought and my first visit back to Derby for many a year. Those GBRF(?) class 20's were still there today, probably similar units too but who knows what they are . . . !?

Much nicer to see your nice green diesels on Dent though, proper traction.

IF modelling  1966 ish  black BP shell crude 100 ton tea tanks(Bachmann 38-221) hauled by a class 47 air braked , about the same period as your freightliner trains. Great job on the layout .  Phil

I left the 100ton GLW out of the equation as not to confuse things too much, I am glad you have mentioned them and airbrakes. :)

 

I was wondering if D368 was airbraked? Looking at my combines it appears it was between Dec 1969 and Jan 1971.

 

The Tri-ang Freightliner boxes are good models of the early pre ISO containers. The first Freightliner ISO containers had a very similar panelling with the lifting eyes/fixing points on the corners It is quite simple to add small squares of thin plastic card with a hole in the middle to represent these containers. I have just spent 20 minutes trying to find a photo of one of the ones I done before I got rid of them.

Hi all,

 

Thanks for the info relating to the tank wagons, it seems several will be okay in their present liveries but others may need a repaint, however as Clive pointed out the smaller ones would not generally be in a block train so I may actually have too many and sell the non-standard items to pay toward something else, this plan is forming as I type - can you tell?

What I should have asked "When did D368 receive its train air brake equipment? " All the 40s were fitted with train vacuum brake many later also were fitted with train air brake equipment as well.

Talking of Anhydrites  - which is what think we are all on about I am going to post a blow-by-blow picture account of my Anhydrite conversion seeing as I have heard nothing back from the mag's, I remain convinced that you have to have a funny handshake to get between the pages of those aloof lot!

 

Once I find the photos now on another hard drive I'll do a sequence for those who want to look. My mate Allan has took my only one to see if he can design a kit so I'm holding back a bit on doing any more, no pressure Allan!

Anhydrite conversion as promised...PART 1.

Here is the donor: Dapol unpainted 21t hopper with shims of 0.040" plasticard to be cemented in. The shape of the shim is cut to fit snugly the internal angles, avoid gaps if possible.

Once happy cement them in position and allow to cure

Mark the outside areas to be removed with a craft knife

Cut off clean as possible with a razor saw

Some liberal filing and sanding will smooth off any excess, at the same time the outer ribs and rivet detail can be removed and smoothed off.

The unsightly joints are filled with Milliput putty and left overnight to cure

Anhydrite conversion part 2...

To make the distinctive outer ribs I used 2mm x 1mm plasticard to form an 'L' shape, the bottom piece is cut off once stiff enough, the web is from 0.010" cut to shape. You need eight of these for the sides.

Test fit as you go and trim as required

 

I can't find the original photo's anywhere so here are copies of the ones shown on page 84 showing the donor alongside the conversion, the tarpaulin rails are brass wire and shaped plasticard. I may make the whole assembly from brass next time.

This is the result. Only at least 19 to go! 39 if I want a rake of empties and a rake of loaded, we'll see Hahaha.

Hi guys,

 

A quick thanks to Andy for checking on me tonight, much appreciated mate. I was logged on earlier to answer a PM but then had to go to work. I took a few photos tonight and have been doing a couple of detail alterations on the layout which I will post tomorrow all being well as the phone is still downloading via wi-fi.

 

Ambis Engineering have sent my window etchings for the station masters house so that will be a reasonable project to get my teeth into when I get some time to myself.
