KNP
Progress I see though it takes a brave man to take a hammer to his layout! No doubt the first swing is the hardest. Best of luck and look forward to seeing the end result. Will be following with interest. 2 1
Multigauge
Adrian, regarding an earlier post about emulating real life events, I was wrong in this case. I checked yesterday and the Metal box building is still standing strong albeit looking a little different. The building that is being demolished backs on to Lavington St. M 9

RMweb Gold Popular Post westerhamstation Posted July 30, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 30, 2022 Welcome back, a start at last on the new baseboard for the junction terminus out in the country. You will doubtless be pleased to know that the boiler box method of construction is going to be used once again, mixed with some hanging basket liner of the Jute type will form the basis of the chalk cutting. As I am making this bit of the layout up as i go along things may change at the moment I have a sort of plan in my head, which is probably not the best place to keep it but we will see how we get along. Some pictures of progress so far. All the best Adrian. Emerging from Westerham showing the old Ewer street sky. Jute hanging basket liner which will form the cutting, and a card mock up of a bridge to hide the hole. The sky backscene has been lowered, and a plywood former has been bent round to form the edge of the cutting. Card formers for the cutting. Slots cut out for the road. Trial fit of the road. Liner trial fitted. Liner trimmed back. Next bit will be building the bridge. 26

Your head, is the best place to keep the plan, at least you will not lose it. 🙂 (That is not true for me as often I find things in my head that I put there and had completely forgotten.) You are going to put a bus on the bridge, aren't you? I think it is compulsory. 3

RMweb Gold Popular Post westerhamstation Posted August 19, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted August 19, 2022 Sorry for the delay I have been waiting for a bus to take me to the new bridge, none have turned up so I have had to walk to the construction site. It looks like it has been built using the scalescenes single track bridge as a guide but using 2mm greyboard as the main carcass and then covering it with plasticard brick, i think this will take the weight of several buses if one should ever turn up. Pictures of construction follow. All the Best Adrian. 23
MrWolf
Congratulations on a particularly neat and convincing bit of model civil engineering. The muted colours in the final picture are very effective. As for the buses, they must be on strike, it's been far too hot for air strikes. 2
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted August 26, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2022 (edited) Adrian. I learnt today that one of my dad's first jobs was at the Metal Box Company! Small world! Lovely bridge work, I wouldn't put a bus on it though, it might become a target for Luftwaffe dive bombers! Regards Shaun. The one that was lurking in the fiddle yard when I started building my layout just happened to be a JU87, the explanation for its presence was to take out buses plonked on model railway bridges. I also have a B24J Liberator, but that's overkill for a Leyland National 2. 1
RMweb Gold Graham T Posted August 27, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 27, 2022 And perhaps a little too exciting in the dive bomber role? 2 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post westerhamstation Posted September 5, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 5, 2022 The bridge is finished and the landscaping up to it is now completed, hopefully learning from previous mistakes I have made the bridge removable for track cleaning and any other gremlins that might happen underneath it. Undergrowth brambles etc have been made using jute hanging basket liner which has been stripped off the backing and sprayed matt brown then placed in position then sprayed with hair spray and sprinkled with summer foliage, static grass and pastel chalks. I will describe the tree making in my next post. All the best Adrian. 25
MrWolf
I do like the effect of the thin soil and vegetation over the chalk, it's a very convincing bit of modelmaking. You've also given me some inspiration on modelling brambles for my own layout. 1 3
RMweb Gold Popular Post westerhamstation Posted September 15, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 15, 2022 Some further work has been done on the right hand corner of the board, the brambles have been extended and brought down further to where the signal box will be, and some more bushes and a gate have been added by the bridge, also a couple of trees along with a small backscene to complete the corner. The trees have been made from spirea japonica which was growing in the garden. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiraea_japonica. My favourite method for trees is to grow Teloxis Aristata from seed which i did last year for Brasted Station, I would have posted the pictures of them but they have all vanished into the ether. and thinking that I wouldn't need any more, none were planted this year. As an interim substitute this is what I have used till I can get some seeds and plant some more. Firstly they were trimmed down and florists wire was used to bind the trunks together, some of the jute hanging basket liner which has been used for the brambles was stripped and sprayed matt brown along with the branches, this was then draped across the branches and sprayed with some of Mrs W Stations hair spray, Woodland Scenics foliage was dropped over it and fixed with spray. Some pictures so far, work will now start on the left hand corner. All the best Adrian. 25
grahame
Super out of control vegetation. The trees are great. But they've obviously not suffered the heatwave and drought we've just had. 😁 3
MrWolf
Those trees look really good, with proper airy canopies rather than the usual clumps on the ends of branches as is often seen. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, I will be nicking the idea but will source a different flavour of stick to circumvent any copyright.... It's still quite green way Oop north... 1

The Thorburn and Baines low relief building is 4ft 6" long, whilst the Metal Box building is 3ft long.sundry other bits have been saved as well. What am I to do with them I have know idea, any suggestions welcome. All the best Adrian. Ps Westerham and Brasted stations escaped unharmed and are alive and well as you will see in future posts. Hi All, Just to let you know that a home has been found for the Ewer Street buildings. I got in contact with Adrian and he has very kindly donated them to our groups project also based on Ewer Street. Our group is SLAG and the layout is Bankside and the link should take you to it. Hopefully we can incorporate the building into the layout in some form or other. Bankside will be at Scaleforum in High Wycombe this weekend 24th and 25th September 2022 and Adrian's Ewer Street building are being transported down and will be on display next to the layout. Thanks Adrian, from SLAG and myself. 4 1 2
