The Metal Box Co. http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Metal Box_Co

I seem to have invoked the gas man genie by using one of his boxes for constructing the buildings on this layout. The genie has appeared and has dug up the road outside and wants to run a new bit of pipe to the gas meter, you can see where this is going, you've guessed, the pipe will run up the back of the new baseboard to the meter. Fourtunately nothing is fixed yet ie: the jam factory, but it means stopping work on that end of the board for a little while.

So the next large building to make is the Metal Box Company. As you can see from the pictures it sat close by the railway on a very cramped site, I will upset the gas genie by using some more of his gas boiler box for construction.post-17489-0-17390700-1481619250_thumb.jpg

From the next set of pictures the developers have moved in and ponced the place up.

Is that Metal Box factory going to be rail-served? If it is, then 'Shocvans' of various types would be the wagons most commonly seen, bringing in bundles of tinplate from South Wales.

Hi, Mr Controller, I like the idea of it being rail-served, but the space available does not allow for this, also the original building didn't have a rail connection, despite being adjacent to the main line. All the best Adrian.

Metal Box certainly brings back memories - then I realised why.  We travelled past the Reading office by train regularly.  Nice article here with a railway picture, and a young lady getting in the company swimming pool.  Don't know how young lady has fared, but the Railway and local scene is very different now!

I'm reasonable sure that's the old Southwark factory, which was never rail served and where I worked for the summer of 1983 whilst I was a Metal Box student trainee. The entrance was on Great Guildford street, which is to the right as you are looking at the factory across the railway lines.

Certainly when I was there it was a security printing factory - printing cheques, paying-in slips, etc. No metal-bashing at all.

Hi, C&WR and Zero Gravitas, thanks for your interest. The model that I am making is of the Southwark factory which is close by the Grand Vitesse depot. It was always a landmark building for me when travelling to London on the train. I didn't realise that it was such a large concern with factories all over the country and with quite a long history. Thanks C&WR for the picture of the lady in the swimsuit. Mrs W Station has put the block on me making a model of the lady in plasticine, as she said the research and modelling would do my eyesight no good.

All the best Adrian.

I didn't realise they did security printing; a bit like Thomas de la Rue, by the sound of it. Their factories tended to be close to their major customers; Carlisle and Reading for biscuit tins, Westhoughton for baked beans, Worcester and Wisbech for fruit and veg canning. A large proportion of the tinplate came from my hometown.

As Freebs said (some very exiting bits of cardboard). The carcass of the building is going to be made from my gas boiler box, and then clad with 1.5mm card and brick paper. The corrugated card is of a good solid type, which allows you to cut it back to make good joins on the corners without showing any edges. I hope the pictures explain what I mean. The shape of the building as you can see from the plan has had to be compressed, and the right hand side of the building swung backwards rather than coming forward, this is to fit the space that I have available. The roof of the of the building will be using the top surface of the corrugated board, with the top layer of paper removed to give some texture. This has been sprayed with grey and black from a rattle can, more work will be done on this later to weather it. Any way that's enough waffle, here are some pictures to bring you up to date. All the best Adrian.

Hi Adrian,

Some time ago I was thinking of doing a small Shed/Depot layout and was going to use Ewer St for the basis of this.

I did start a thread on this to try and get some information but it never came to much.

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/107286-ewer-street-depot-pictures-and-information-sought/?p=2169903

It is still in the back of my mind to try and do something along these lines.

I notice from your post above above that you have a rather nice partial map of the area showing the track layout and buildings.

Can I ask if you have anything (or where i could get) to the left of that shown which would show the area around the depot.

Merry Christmas.

Ray.

Fantastic developments in my absence, Adrian.

I hope that you, Mrs W.S, and all other posters had a good Christmas and are all set up for the New Year.

However, I am sad to have to tell you that you will no doubt be spending your New Year availing yourself of the services of Messrs Sue, Grabbit and Run for breach of patent, I refer to page 58 of the January issue of M.... R... which contains an article on the use of coffee stirrers for railway modelling! At the very least, I suggest that a stiff letter to the editor is called for, especially as the perpetrator admitted to stealing them from his staff canteen.

Hi Ron, good to you have you back with us. thank you for letting me know about the antics of the coffee stirrer pirates. A stiff letter on a piece of thick card has been sent to them, and to their employers for putting temptation within in easy reach, litigation may follow. All the best Adrian.

Well that's all over for another year, the ground has been cleared ready for the construction of the Metal Box Company Ltd premises.post-17489-0-02726200-1483447904_thumb.jpg

Just needs the electricity board to come and move the high voltage cable.

For the windows and walls I drew these up in illustrator on the computer, the windows are based on the old metal frame Crittal Windows which had quite a narrow section. The print outs were spliced together, and glued to some 1.5mm mount board using Prittstik and a seam roller to to ensure good adhesion,

(you can use a steam roller for even better adhesion). Window apertures were cut out, and notches cut in for the window sills, which will be made from 1mm card. Some pictures to show progress so far. all the best to you all for the New Year Adrian.
