That last shot, with the station in the background, and then the hills beyond, is just superb Adrian, everything blends together so well.

I'd heard that Frank Spencer was a bit of a rambler, but didn't quite grasp what that meant...

Big day , Jeep the station dog is 1 year old today. Here are some pictures of him celebrating his birthday on the Severn Valley Railway. I am sorry to report that he his Jeep no mates, as he doesn't seem to like other dogs much. All the best Adrian.

It looks like he's taking a keen interest, did he try to take a bite out of the big steam thing?

Al.

He would have to be pretty "loco" to try that!     :O   .............................................................   Unless he had been trained to do it   .......    :nono: :nono:

From this angle is the M7 being converted with cut down chimney and cab for the Whitstable branch?

Kevin

I don't think crews in East Kent would want much to do with an M7. Even TWW found them inferior to an H, I think.

Extraordinary how being able to get right down to proper eye level enhances the views of the layout, you really feel as though you are there.

The last shot gives a real feel of distance, as you look towards the water tower and goods shed.

I hope you left some of that "Drink Me" potion for another time...

Plan B. Well what ever happened to plan A,  in short I dug a modelling hole for myself threw away the spade and lost any interest in the project. The reason for this was simple after building the arches and bridge to cover up the lower line from Westerham, nothing that I could think of to go on top of the arches seemed either workable or interesting enough to model.

Months later when I was looking up from the modelling hole I had dug myself into a thought occured to me scrap the arches and build another factory to cover the lower line, reluctant to scrap anything, and wanting to utilise the arches in some form, l I looked at the Ewer Street plan again and realised the answer had been there all the time, move the turntable and servicing depot, scaling the plan up it fits into the cramped area spot on just as the prototype. As my model is not going to be a faithfull reproduction of the Grand Vittesse and Ewer St just a collection of elements of it I can justify moving it, so from the pictures you can get a rough idea of what I will be trying to achieve. New extented baseboard, remove the arches from the old base board and reinstall them on the wider baseboard, insert a point to join the turntable and service depot to the mainline. Please any suggestions would be most welcome.

All the best (back out of the hole) Adrian

Hi mate,

Great to hear from you again, I thought it had gone a bit quiet.

Glad to hear that you have sorted out what you want to do, and climbed out of your hole, the end result of your thoughts looks as though it will work well, and I'm sure it will look brilliant as always.

All the best,

Al

I've dug another hole for myself, this time a turntable is going in it. But as usual with modelling a prototype not much information is available, I have one photo of the turntable at Ewer street and another one that looks similar at Portsmouth. The problem is how did this type of turntable work, did the beams that it seems to sit on rotate with the turntable and railings, or was some other system used. ie the beams and railings remain stationary and just the platform rotates. Please any advice and help would be most helpful. all the best (in a spin) Adrian.

I don't know anything about turntables, but from the pictures it looks to me as though the deck with the rails on is built on a steel girder platform which fills the whole of the turntable well, and the whole thing turns. I would guess there are castors running on rails around the circumference at the bottom of the well.

Hi Al, thanks that what I was thinking, but it just seemed a very strange method of construction and very heavy as well. I wonder if it was built like that because they are built over brick arches and not set into the ground.

As they say what goes around comes around. all the best Adrian.

I would concur that the whole lot turns, including the safety fencing around the periphery which on both photos appears mounted on decking inside the circumference of the "well" and runs right round the edge leaving gaps only where the track runs onto the deck.

Interesting variations. Not unlike the old Triang designed turntable in principle with its big ring around the outside!

A bit of demolition work on the arches with the knife to split them down the length, and the addition of some MDF to widen the baseboard so that the track can reach the turntable from the mainline.

Where the road goes under the depot I will raise the surface of the road by a few mm so that the track won't be so visible when looking through the bridge. I have just plonked everything down for the moment it will need fastening and fettling. all the best Adrian.
