RMweb Gold ChrisN Posted January 22, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 22, 2016 Thought you might like this... 1902.JPG Regards Shaun Shaun, Lovely picture, right sort of time period too! Now, I know I must have missed it earlier but why is the down platform building not much more than just a facia? In my ignorance I assumed that the rest of it had been knocked down, but obviously not.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted January 22, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 22, 2016 Hi Chris, It seems to have been a common theme for that design of station, which was also used at Rowsley, Hassop and Chapel-en-le-Frith, in that one platform has a nice ornate building with the ticket office and waiting rooms, and the opposite platform has a facade which looks just as grand, but only has a tiny Ladies waiting room and the Gents Urinal behind it. In Bakewell's case you could sort of explain it as a lack of room, as the station is squeezed onto a narrow shelf on the side of the hill, and a similar excuse could be made for Rowsley, but that doesn't hold true for Hassop or Chapel, as they are located in fairly open surroundings. The reason for the ornate wall is, of course, to give them something to hang the canopies from, and architecturally I suppose it makes sense that they match the building on the other side. It's certainly an eye-catching idea, and I think one unique to these stations. Cheers, Al.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 2, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 2, 2016 Blimey, it feels a long time since I did any modelling. Tonight I've had a go at painting some figures using the method demonstrated by Shaun (Sasquatch) on his thread. The technique used, which I understand comes from wargaming roots is to paint the figures black as a primary colour, and then dry-brush other colours over the top. So here's the first step, a sprue of Dapol figures given an overall coat of rattle-can matt black. and a closer look: I then dry brushed using Humbrol Matt 96 RAF Blue for the uniform colour, and a mixture of Humbrol 61 Flesh and Humbrol 34 Matt White for skin colour. I think I may have not had quite a dry enough brush in places, but here's the results: It's quite an effective technique, and I reckon a bit of practice would make it even better. Thanks for looking, Al.

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 2, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 2, 2016 Thanks Duncan. Not as good as Shaun's, but they'll do to hide on a footplate Al.

RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted February 2, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 2, 2016 Just as good as mine if not better! Some of the paint on mine is shinny which kind of lets them down!!
RMweb Gold JCL Posted February 3, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2016 I think you made a great job of them Al. I'll look forward to a photo of them in place.
RMweb Gold ChrisN Posted February 3, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2016 Al, They look good. Faces show the features well, and the colouring shows the folds in the clothing. Job done
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 3, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2016 To finish off the figures, I first cut them off the sprue: There seems to be some discussion as to who's going to be driving the next turn... In the meantime, I started to remove the fireman's base: and did the same for the other two, when I could get a word in edgeways... So, who got to drive? This one: And the fireman looks fed up now: Still, he should be pleased, that's the first Bachmann 4F I've managed to get hold of, before that he'd have been riding the Airfix ones - horrible things. Thanks for looking, Al.
MikeHemmings
Absolutely brilliant AL, perhaps they'll have clean overalls for the next shift. Mike
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 3, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2016 Thanks Mike. I do wonder how many sets of overalls they used to get issued with, because they certainly wouldn't last long. Al.

RMweb Premium Bogie Posted February 4, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 4, 2016 In the next week look out for a package postmarked Australia. It will contain several sets of figures for painting and a self addressed packet for putting the completed items in. Cheers
Fordbank
Fine application of a technique that's certainly new to me. A bit like pre-shading I suppose. I'll be trying this. Thanks, Al. Andy

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 4, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 4, 2016 Thanks all of you, it does seem to be quite an effective technique, but I need to practice more, I think. Al
Classsix T
You do yourself a disservice Al. One tip though, try a range of blues. The real overalls are a really dark blue when new but will end up sky blue once washed a few dozen times. I'd never expect to see the same hue on a group of railwaymen. Additionally depending on uniform renewals, the trousers and jackets can differ. Have a look at the loco crews next time you're at a preservation site. I'd also expect the passenger crews to be smarter in appearance from the freight bods, of course the diesel drivers haven't a spec of dirt on them! Always liking, C6T.

Classsix T
Not even Al, do a dribble of yer base colour and add white as and when you feel. Remember the base colour of cotton is white, any other colours are added by dyes and subtracted by washing. C6T.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted February 5, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 5, 2016 I've finally got round to planting the other ground signal this evening, and then had a play with tested my new 4F So here's some photos from around the goods yard: That's all for now, thanks for looking. RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted February 5, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 5, 2016 Great Pictures Al. I do like that goods shed. I bet that 4F is a dream compared to the Airfix/Hornby version. I've been trying to run my Dean Goods on Dunster and even after a good lubrication and clean it's still sh1te at best. Oxford have announced a new one so I might have to put my name down for one. There's an old Wills Finecast chassis kit knocking about here somewhere to go under an old Airfix 4F which I'm saving for a rainy day in my old age! Keep the pictures coming, Regards Shaun
Andrew P
Love the pics Al, but strangely enough its that last one that does it for me, that's a really good shot and need no Locos to make it work.

Thanks Andy, I agree, it's a nice shot, I like the way you can see the barn in the distance. My favourite though is this one, which I thought I'd try in black and white: Al.

Keep the pictures coming, Regards Shaun Yeah, it's a lovely little engine, smooth and quiet. I do have a real soft spot for the 3F and 4Fs, they look like they were built to do any job you could throw at them. I know they were pretty awful in reality, with those rubbish bearings, and they didn't ride very well, but I still like them. Al.
