RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted January 14, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2016 This evening, I started to build a second ground dod. This time however, instead of using the whitemetal parts provided in the MSE kit, I decided to have a go at scratch building the main components myself. So I started as before with the MSE disc, and soldered to it an axle and a tiny sliver of brass rod to strengthen the join: Then, using some scrap etch, I soldered up a small box for the lamp holder: and then cut away and let into the box a piece of brass rod to act as the bearing for the axle: Then, turning from brass to styrene, I cut out a kit of parts to make the support frame: and glued them all together to form this: I then attached the lamp box and disc bearing to the top of the frame with epoxy: and with the disc in position: That's as far as I've got. I'll paint it all tomorrow, and then fit the fibre optics, and the mechanism. Thanks for looking, Al.
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted January 14, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 14, 2016 Love the comparison pictures Al. Another little improvement would be to take a Stanley knife and lob off all the little knobs on the ends of the tie bars and the Peco point mounting clips. Improves the look of permanent way no end! regards Shaun.
Jock67B
Al, I've got to say that the latest ground signal is simply superb! Kind regards, Jock.
RMweb Premium uax6 Posted January 15, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 15, 2016 Looks good (being so small it must be hard to see what you are doing), but I wonder how strong the plastic parts are. Your soldering on the top part makes me think you could solder up the bottom part from etch too.... Andy G
Andrew P
Looing superb Al, I wish I could have some of your talent mate, that's really neat.
Fordbank
Watching with great interest, Al. Don't need to tell you how many ground signals there are at Peak Forest. Not sure I can replicate your scratchbuilding skills though. May have to stick to my original modellers' license and imagine that the line was resignalled with ground colour lights following 'the decision to keep open the Peak Line'. It would be nice to have a bit of a mixture as I plan to do with the major signals. Andy
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted January 16, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2016 Looking great. Pedant mode - Don't forget the track circuit indication (white lozenge) on the ground signal. Dave, I've been looking at some photos, and I can't see the track circuit lozenge on the prototype, where should it be? Copyright Stan Roberts / Peak Rail Association The signal in question is in the bottom left corner. Thanks, Al.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 16, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2016 Look at Stans photo here - http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/64977-bakewell-peak-district-line-br-scratchbuild-a-ground-dod/page-138&do=findComment&comment=2161716 The starter had a track circuit provided between the two photos and because the ground signal then gains the benefits of this, the lozenge is provided. Whether you need it will depend on your chosen period of modelling, probably not as you have the trailing connection by the box and it looks as though the track circuit was provided after that connection had gone. Ah right, that makes sense. In that case I'll stick to the time period with the trailing connection. Thanks very much for your help. Al.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted January 16, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2016 This evening, I've painted up the ground signal, and attached the control wire to the back blinder. I also fitted the fibre optic cable, but managed to snap it whilst preparing to take the photos, so I'm going to have to fix this. Anyway, here's the photos: More tomorrow, Al.

RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted January 17, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 17, 2016 This morning, I was woken by lots of light in the bedroom. So much, I thought I'd overslept, but no, when I looked out of the window, I saw this: Anyway, as I was awake, I thought I'd finish the ground signal. First, I made a cosmetic balance weight out of 20thou styrene card, and some 2mm round rod: and fitted it to the dod: Then I replaced the optical fibre for the lamp which I broke last night, and painted it up: It looks a little busy round the back of the signal now but here's some shots of it complete: I'd also forgotten to add the coloured filters to the disk before I soldered up the back blinder, so I had a tricky time getting the filters in and stuck in place working in between the disc and the dod. However, finally done, and with a temporary light source on the end of the optical fibre, here's the finished article: So that's 2 down and 2 to go. I believe I'm right in saying the next one, immediately adjacent to the signal box, should be a white disc with a yellow stripe, not a red one, so that shunting moves from the goods loop into the cattle dock don't result in a SPAD. I wonder if Beast66606 could confirm? Thanks for looking, Al. 4
Andrew P
Hi Al, We had a good covering this morning in Swad too, it started to go but about half an Hour ago it started to come down again and with some vengeance. The work on the Dolls is just brilliant mate, my pair that Shaun made really do help to enhance the look of the Layout, there something I've never had on a Layout until now. Well done mate. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted January 17, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 17, 2016 Thanks very much mate, it was seeing how good those looked on your layout that made me get off my bottom and start these, they really do look good. Cheers, Al.
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted January 18, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 18, 2016 Nice clean job Al!! Dolls with yellow on black were used to allow the driver to pass the signal at danger for shunt moves on to the head shunt only. I've never seen one modeled before, so could be a first! Nice covering of snow, just hope it's not the onset of a deluge like we had this week. Mrs. Sasquatch took the truck and came back with 1.5 tons of sand bags this morning. We're exhausted from trying to divert all the rain water. Shaun.

Great view from the window..... don't you just wish you could wind the clock back 50+more years, you'd have a great view of trains from off the end of Haddon Estate round to nearly the Golf course by the look of it! cheers joe

Oh I so do wish I'd been there to see the line worked by steam, my Dad reminisces about looking across the valley and seeing the trains crossing Coombes Road viaduct and then following them as they climbed to the station. He could hear them whistle as they left Haddon Tunnel, it used to echo round the valley. Of course the trees and undergrowth were much less in those times, so you could clearly see the line all the way along. I'm still hoping to be alive to see Peak Rail run steam into Bakewell again, and if I am, then I've got the best viewpoint ever Cheers, Al.
