Hi Al

Fantastic pictures mate. Really stunning. That backscene really comes into its own when you take pictures at low level. The picture of the 4Fs looking toward the station just looks so real. Amazing work mate.

I'm coming up Easter Weekend so I'll pop round this time as Im up for 4 days.

All the best

Marcus

Hi Marcus, thanks mate, I'm still really pleased with the backscenes, they make such a difference.

It would be great to see you at Easter if you can find the time, don't forget your camera!

Cheers,

Al.

Hi Al

I shall definitely be bringing the camera. I'm sure Anthony will be wanting to do a video too.

Could you PM me your phone number again as managed to break my phone at work. Lost the numbers which were saved to the phone rather than the SIM. Unfortunately yours was one of them!!

I shall be coming up on the Saturday and going home Tuesday so plenty of time for a visit and maybe a beer or two....

Cheers

Marcus.

Yeah, it's a lovely little engine, smooth and quiet. I do have a real soft spot for the 3F and 4Fs, they look like they were built to do any job you could throw at them.

I know they were pretty awful in reality, with those rubbish bearings, and they didn't ride very well, but I still like them.

Al.

The picture between the two locos works brilliantly in black and white. The photographic background becomes seamless.

One of my favourites too.

Cheers,

Andy

Morning Al,

Not been well lately so trying to catch up - those figures look really good (as I'd expect!) and it wouldn't surprise me if I could get close to producing an 00 statue of my father in workwear at Hurlford shed - that would be spooky, but he was always very proud of his moustache at that time which is an obvious reference. I agree with you on the 3F and 4Fs although the few 4Fs we had at Hurlford were left hand drive versions, and so my unused but forty year old Airfix one will have to be modified. Not sure if there is a detailing kit available out there anyone anyone?

Your images are superb and inspiring, and it sounds as if the impending visit of Marcus will make for a fun event,

Kind regards,

Jock.

I was in Bakewell in Easter and was PMing him regularly as we were supposed to meet up as we were going to bring Bakewell up to the present day with some of my stock for a bit of a laugh. Unfortunately just before we went he stopped replying. I know the road he lives in in Bakewell but can't remember which house it is. I know hes' had time away before due to work commitments but, it's been uncomfortably long this time. I'll perhaps pop to his road next time I'm in Bakewell and see if one of his neighbours knows which his house is. It's only a small street with a few cottages so I'm sure somebody will know him. I did have his phone number until I trashed my phone and his number was one of those that were stored to the phone rather than the sim.

Marcus,

That is concerning, I hope everything is ok.

Hi Folks.

Today is the first time I've logged into RMWeb for over 3 months.

Firstly, my heartfelt apologies to all of you for causing you concern, and in particular apologies to Marcus for letting him down over Easter.

As you know, I was struggling to find my modelling mojo at the beginning of the year, and this was actually a symptom of a deeper problem.

I'm not sure if we've spoken before about it, but I suffer from bouts of severe manic depression. Normally i have it fairly well under control, but this year I had a bad relapse, due to a number of outside factors.

When it gets me, I find talking to people, and socialising, a very difficult thing to do, even through a forum like this, so I stopped posting, and then, due to feeling guilty about not posting, I stopped logging on at all.

I've now managed to get a handle on things, and having just had a wonderful holiday on the West Highland coast, I'm now feeling brave enough to face you all again.

It's going to take some time to catch up with all your threads, so bear with me.

As has happened before, whilst on holiday I came up with a few ideas, which I will detail in my next post.

Thanks for reading,

Al.

Okay, so first, let me brag about my holiday :)

I've spent the last fortnight staying at Plockton in Wester Ross,  which is just north of the Kyle of Localsh on the West Coast of Scotland.

We have had glorious weather - I haven't once had to wear a coat for the whole duration of the holiday.

Here's the view out of our front door:

and here's an overview of Plockton:

The area is known for it's coastal railway, with request stops at outlying stations, here's a train at Duirinish:

I paid a visit to Kyle of Localsh Station, where there is a small museum, with an OO model of the station in it's former glory:

We went over to Skye, and walked / climbed up Bla Bheinn mountain:

and found a wonderful cool clear stream to rest by:

We also caught a glimpse of Waverley, the last steam paddle steamer, here she is under the Skye bridge:

We did and saw lots more, but I don't want to make you too jealous, so I'll leave it there!

In my final post this evening, I'll talk more about modelling.

Al,

Glad to hear you are feeling better.  Never worry about not posting.  If looking in and not posting helps then just look in.  All the best.

Have to agree with Brian,

Never feel guilty about not posting, but is good to see you back.

Thank you, all of you, for such a warm welcome back. It's really good to know that I can talk to people here who are understanding and supportive. As Brian will know, actually logging in and posting tonight was a huge hurdle for me, and your responses make me feel much, much better.

Thank you.

Al.

Right.

So modelling then...

Well, you won't be surprised to hear that I haven't touched Bakewell for a few months, and even despite feeling better, I can work up no enthusiasm at the moment for starting the hundred and one jobs that need doing to it.

Have no fear, Bakewell isn't going anywhere, and I'm hoping that I can kick-start my mojo with a new project, and return to Bakewell later. As you know, my favourite and most fulfilling area of modelling is building structures out of plasticard, and there is little scope now to do that with Bakewell.

So I've decided to do a new project: an end to end layout with the possibility of exhibiting it in the future.

It will again be based on a prototype, still in the Peak District, but not on the Ambergate - Buxton line.

I'm planning to model Grindleford station on the Hope Valley Line. This will give plenty of scope for bridges and buildings, as well as the West portal of Totley Tunnel.

It really lends itself to modelling, as there is a bridge as a scenic break at one end, and the Tunnel mouth at the other.

Here's a Google Maps view of what it looks like now:

post-17302-0-02618900-1465673047_thumb.jpg

and here's the 1922 OS Map of the same section:

post-17302-0-36694000-1465673042_thumb.jpg

As you can see there are a few sidings, and the whole station is on a pleasing curve.

The Tunnel Portal looks like this:

and immediately in front of the portal is a three-arch roadbridge:

post-17302-0-02318000-1465673327_thumb.jpg

Surprisingly, Semaphore signals are still operated here even now:

Here's the view from the bridge:

The signal box is out of sight round the bend, it looks like this nowadays:

So, there's a quick overview of the subject, what do you think?

I will start a new thread once construction commences.

Looks like an interesting project. The scenery is great, really looking forward to seeing your take on this in model form. And if you need any assistance with drawings, posters, etc, please let me know.

(My wife suffers from short bouts of manic depression, and although I don't pretend to know what it really feels like inside, I pretty damn sure know what it can do to a person and the strain it puts on a family.)

Model Railways are more about the modelling than the railways- discuss

Al,

It looks good with plenty of buildings.  If you take it back to steam days there should be plenty of interest with the track not being 'rationalised'.
