New Southwich

Hi Cav, apologies school boy error!

In my haste to get the track sprayed I forgot about the concrete sleeper track. As you know, normally I have a method and procedure to follow when tackling projects, might explain my OCD! Unfortunately I had not come up with a method for the track painting, still all sorted now. Luckily we had some Plastikote Suede paint left.

As Will mentioned, yesterday morning we masked up the rails with Maskol in order to protect the rail colour, not quite how I expected to be spending Christmas morning!

The sleepers were then sprayed with Plastikote Suede and now look very good. Inadvertently we have come up with something rather nice! The rails need touching up in places and may be given a coat of dirty brown just to finish it off, although when the washes of dirt and grime are added after ballasting it might not be required. We shall see.

I will post some photos shortly.

This afternoon the rails were touched up following the removal of the Maskol, the concrete sleeper track is looking much better now.

I keep saying to Will that New Southwich would look great set in the late 80s or early 90s but he is not having any of it!

Shame, as this would look great passing the cement terminal:

Now Will can make a start on the ballasting.

  • 2 weeks later...

Evening all,

After deciding that the carrs 2mm ballast is much too dark for the mainline, despite saying light grey!, I have laid a small bit in the cement works sidings, which I think should look good once weathered up, however my dad is not convinced. Any opinions or alternatives are much appreciated!

As well as the ballast test I've fitted two fluorescent tubes above the layout purely to aid me whilst working so I can actually see the layout!

Thanks,

Hmm Im never a fan of plain (darker) grey ballast. To me ballast either looks new in which case its a grey/creamy buff colour or its old and brownish. I'm in your dads corner here I'm affraid. Im sure there are a million pics online to support gret ballast but this pic looks right to me. As you can see the newer ballast looks buff and the older stuff brown.

Thanks Cav,

I think I've been converted as well, going to order the buff/sand colour from c&l tonight for the cement sidings so hopefully that will look a better colour. Still can't believe the ballast I've got at the moment is a light grey.....

Thanks Neil,

It's a nice size but again I think too dark, may try it on Ashton....

Thanks Ryan,

I reckon I might give woodland scenics ballast a look, get some ordered!

After this weeks mock exams hopefully I will be able to crack on with the layout over the next few weeks, going to make up the warehouse with dowel rodding and hopefully the ballast will be here by the weekend.

Thanks,

Will

Hi Will,

I've always been a purveyor of the Woodland Scenics grey, or grey blend ballast, but I'm slowly being converted to a more buff/brown/sand colour. Although I believe it's more a point as to where the ballast originated from, as to what colour it is.

I live not far from Penmaenmawr quarry, and the ballast from there seems to have more of a grey look to it, although more 'Southern' areas tend to be more buff.

Again though, it's each persons own perspective on how it looks.

Good luck with the exams too, hope it all goes well.

Jinty ;-)

I used woodland scenics buff for the mainline on Outon Road with a mix of brown and ligt grey sand from Ikea for the yard/secondary line. I think it worked well once weathered in with the airbrush and foliage added.

Thanks Jinty,

Exams are going well thanks, 4 left! We've ordered a jar of buff coloured ballast so hopefully that will be better for the yard. Still unsure about the mainline....

Wow Cav those photos are stunning! I think perhaps I need to have a look at the woodland scenics ballast, is it two millimeters?

Thanks Cav, WCML and Terry, I am very pleased with it so far!

Tonight's job was a large one; making a 3ft extension board so the point work won't be hidden under a bridge and more space for me to bed in the warehouse. Hopefully tomorrow I can redo the fiddle yard to match the curve and wire up the new section. Photos to follow:
