Interesting place to store a spare instanter coupling!

Not that unusual, seen shunters do that quite often, although more often than not it would just have been thrown on the hook.

What is unusual though is the bow shackle attached to the end of it, I assume they've been using the pilot to pull a cable somewhere. - Maybe a bit of cable shunting!

Could the windlass bollard type things in this shot be anything to do with it?

Hopefully not using lamp iron? Or there will be 2 bolt size holes in cab end!

Done some pole shunting once didn't end well with match sticks been made!

I am modelling a couple of BR Blue 08's in O gauge and I am interested in the spare instanter coupling that I have seen in many pictures thrown over the coupling hook. What was the reason for this and when would it be used? As far as I am aware 08's had a screw link coupling fitted.

An Instanter was easier to couple using a shunting pole, less weight.

Even without a pole an instanter is much easier to throw on and off by hand. Lighter and no need to fart about winding it in.

Fake picture....Dapol  O gauge 🤨model

Agreed, and very lazy not to ballast the tracks, especially the fiddle-yard at the back-right, though at least they've tried to disguise it by having a couple of buildings ;)
