class 08 shunter prototype photos

Recommended Posts

Found this on YouTube.

At 15:40 and 18:00 there is a glimpse of D3158, engine by Blackstone, electrical by BTH. Only 15 of them built, and were never classified 08/09/10.

Also at 17:06 there is a glimpse of a class 11 (no exhauster on front left footplate)

I photographed this one parked in the bay at Stafford in November that year - close examination of the cabside revealed its original large number 13291 still discernible under the paint (a photo of it as 13291 appears in one of my Bradford Barton albums). The following year it was renumbered to 08221, its third identity in the same green livery with early BR emblems (presumably @08221 already knows this 😊!)

@Halvarras thank you!

Thats the best photo I have seen of it in that livery - really appreciated!

That photo should explain to younger enthusiasts why we had such trouble telling what colour locos were painted “back in the day”; a seriously dirty green one looked very like a faded black one.

I didn't take that one - it was taken by Jim Freebury and posted by @Rugd1022! If only I'd had a camera that good back then (but the film and processing costs would have meant fewer models being bought of course.....) - here's my somewhat cr@ppier attempt at Stafford on 11th November 1973......but at least it shows the other side, which may be useful to a potential modeller out there (in contravention of Sod's Law which says that one will usually find six views of the same side before a view of the other side emerges........and that will have been taken in the dark 🤪!!) Note, only one vacuum exhauster box on this one, as well as those early external side hinges.......

PS actually my pic looks better on my tablet than it does on my laptop's screen, where I posted it from - perhaps I was being a little harsh on myself (and the camera I had at the time!)

Comparing the two sides, there are variations in the positioning of the top front OHLE flash and a couple of the grabrails, note two are out of alignment in my photo, and those doors are also missing the horizontal rails seen on the opposite side. Off another loco?

Another difference spotted!

No, I know it's  not an 08, but I thought this movie on YouTube might be of interest. Mostly it features Italian 3 phase electrics ( which are fascinating beasts in their own right), but there is also some steam, and at 02:39 there is a short clip of a former LMS jackshaft drive shunter, ancestor of class 08.

No, it’s three phase, so three AC currents, 120 degrees out off phase with one another, using two wires and the running rails as the three conductors.

You do sometimes see two-wire dc systems, like s trolleybus system, typically where the track is so awful, or subject to such abuse, or is portable, that using it as a return is not viable.

Being uber-picky, the Jack shaft locos weren’t ancestors of the 08, they were the single motor alternative to the two traction motor animals that evolved (slightly) to become 08. The two motor beasts rapidly proved more suitable, and the single motor genus died out.

The LMS conducted a really well thought out programme of diesel shunter trials during the 1930s, ditto railcar developments, and later “big” locos. Smart cookies, especially Tommy Hornbuckle, the engineer who led it all.

There's a Class 08 back shunting the Cornish china clay! 08752 (ex-D3920), looking in superb condition and a credit to RSS, was delivered by road to Rocks Dryers, Goonbarrow, on 6th June and has just been trialled - scroll down to beyond Bristol, love the view from the cab! :

If you scroll down a little further there's a couple of photos of Imerys P405D 'Alex' going the other way, plans for this one (and P406D 'Isaac' still at Rocks AFAIK) unclear at the moment - overhaul, or......?

I think I’ve put this up before, it’s one of me in 1987 driving an 08 at the Caledonian railway in Brechin when I went up there with my dad to view some tubes for his quarry Hunslet ‘Alice’, i drove it from Brechin to bridge of dun with my dad holding his foot on the deadmans pedal

Not actually a Class 11 as it was never owned by BR. It's the same design but was built by English Electric for industry. ICI, I think.

So THAT'S why it's not listed in this book!

was wondering why it wasn't listed in there and thought maybe they forgot about it.

Watercress line shuttle between Alresford and Ropley today, in between the steam service train. I was interested to discover later that this is ex St Blazey 08377 that appears in many of my 70s books, including on the Wenford Bridge line.
