Last week I ordered a few parts to experiment with the roof vents. There appear to be two different types, the majority are conical with a few mushroom type. I bought a few of the Square mushroom type vents from unit models and whilst the prototype look to be rectangular as opposed to square I think they will do the job. Very nice models!

The parts that I am using for the conical type seem to be a little on the thin side and slightly too tall, I have subsequently ordered a few that are wider and shorter which will hopefully look better.

Here is a photo showing two of the roof vents placed on the roof section to see how it looks;

In order to hopefully prevent the skylight tops from sagging, I have decided to add some brass wire between the peaks of the trusses. Over the weekend with the help of Grimley Senior the roof trusses were adjusted to allow the brass wire to sit in place.

The first section which sits above the lathe road, road 16 has had the brass wire added;

Hopefully this week I can get the brass wire added to the rest of the roof sections. Once this has been done I can get the sky lights, roof sections and roof vents primed and sprayed.

The larger parts for the conical roof vents have arrived, I just need to work on the bases for them to sit on. Once sprayed a nice matt grey colour and weathered these should look nice sat on the roof sections.

Hopefully tomorrow I can do some more work on the skylights.

Thanks Duncan and David.

This week I have been preparing the skylight tops in readiness for spraying, when the weather warms up a bit!

The next job is to get the bases for the roof vents glued on to the roof sections ready for spraying. Then the roof vents themselves need to be finished as well as cutting the translucent plastic sheet sections to sit under the skylight tops.

I am still undecided as to what colour to paint the roof of the shed. Today the roof appears to be a light grey but looking at photos and video from 1990 and 1991 it looks a very dark grey.

Any thoughts or ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Yesterday I decided to do a bit of modelling on stock rather than the depot, so my attention turned to some class 60s.

My original plan was to work on 60004 Lochnagar, the first of the class in Coal sector livery, Metals 60037 Helvellyn and finally for this batch, 60086 Schiehallion also in Coal. But,......there was a flaw in my plan!

When I had a sheet of dry rub down transfers produced for future class 60 projects I appear to have ignored 60004! Back then my plan was to model triple grey class 60s during the EWS and latterly DB period, which would explain me forgetting 004 as it was then in EW&S livery. Never mind, I decided to model 60061 Alexander Graham Bell, also in Coal sector. I have always liked this beast not just because of who it is named after, but the long name on the side of the loco. So yesterday the numbers were added, this morning the overhead live wire stickers were put on and hopefully later this week I can get the sector decals applied.

Here are the Three Amigos!

I am looking forward to seeing some sector liveried 60s on shed, especially coal liveried examples as the majority of them should be from that sector.

Me gusta tus 3 amigos, Alex.

What sort of plastic sheet are you going to use for the skylights?

I´ve used PETg in 0,7mm sheets recently. It cuts well, glues well and is flexible but not rigid. If you score it with a knife it bends quite well and stays at the desired angle.

Might be good for those skylights.

Andy.

Hi Simon,

I am sure that you have already seen this but on the Class 60 Data site there is a nice article on Wigan coal;

http://www.tugtracker.co.uk/history/wigancoal.htm

Hi Andy,

I have two sheets of 0.8mm Translucent Polypropylene Plastic Sheet A2 and Frosted. I haven’t opened the parcel yet so not sure how it will work out. Fingers crossed!

If it doesn’t work with the sheets of plastic I have, I will certainly try your recommendation. Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

Over the weekend I managed to finish off the three 60s that were on the workbench, once the weather improves these three can then be weathered.

I couldn’t resist sitting them inside the shed;

It is nice to see some sector liveried Brush machines, they did look good in that livery......

There was a new arrival at Boxenby on Saturday, worked in from Outon Road;

Yesterday I managed to get the strips of translucent plastic for the skylight glazing cut to size.

Hopefully next weekend I can make a start on getting the roof sections painted ahead of finishing the skylights.

I must say I do like the 60's, they look good ex works too! I'm still unsure as wether to get one for Millers Dale.

The 37 looks good in there, the nose ariel needs bending straight though, its quite maliable so will bend up ok.

Hi David, I have used T-Cut and Enamel thinners both work well. The last two were done using T-Cut and a cotton bud. All three were from the Hornby 60077, I have not tried this method on their 062. I know that the paint application was not as good on 066 as the layer underneath came off when I tried to remove the decals on mine.

Hope that helps.

Hi Peter, it was nice to work on some locos rather than the depot itself. I am hoping to make more progress as the weather gets better.

Still desperate to play though!

Hi Cav, they do look nice just out of the box fresh from Brush works. I think you should!

I will have a look at the aerials.......need to get the floor down and finished then 707 will look right at home.

Not much modelling has taken place over the past couple of weeks, but hopefully I can get back to working on the depot at the weekend following a brief spell on stock.

Yesterday a nice little package arrived from CD3D containing some parts for the roof vents. Last night I had a brief look at them and dry fitted one of each to see how they looked.

First off the conical shaped vents;

3ed24f697a345b09fc648cc8d55ca9fa_zps7771

Here is the mushroom shaped version, the top needs raising up a little but there are only seven of these so shouldn’t be too much of a problem;

Tonight I hope to get the parts glued together ready for painting.

Looking as good as ever, Alex. I'm sure there must a syndrome these days for someone prepared to take on a project involving so many identical parts. I can't help but admire your determination and persistence. Boxenby really is going to be quite something when it's finished.

The sector tractor looks good too. After seeing that, I'm now struggling to resist the bargain one on Hattons' website. I fancy a nice coal sector 60 too, but now I'm getting distracted and I have a lot of saving up to do for Bachmann's forthcoming releases over the next couple of years.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks Dave, I think they call it OCD!!! Well my wife does......

Go on Dave, you might as well. You will be doing your bit for the economy! A coal 60 would look superb passing through Waverley West on HAAs, please do get one!

Bachmann’s Mk2Fs and the DBSO are right up your street....

Thanks David, I am hoping to get more work done this weekend.

Hi Richard, I used Enamel thinners and T-cut with a cotton bud to remove the logos, it can take time and patience but worth the effort. Hope that helps.

No problem at all Richard, good luck.

Whilst not really suitable for the location of Boxenby I have purchased a class 50. I have always liked this class and really enjoyed travelling behind them from Waterloo and especially out of Paddington to Reading and Oxford. Many a Network Day was spent between Waterloo and Basingstoke and on the WR out of Paddington, quality!

My favourite was 50036 Victorious and I plan to model her in 1990 condition with snow ploughs and a rather shabby coat of Large Logo!

Just like in these two photos:

Something that you won’t see too often, a class 50 at Boxenby:

Revenge will become Victorious!

Not much modelling was achieved over the weekend as I was busy, but hopefully this week I can make progress on the roof sections.
