Grimleygrid
Hi Simon, many thanks for the comments I am glad that you like it so far. I don't think you can have a model based on Toton without a Peak! I hope that once my depot is finally finished your crane might be able to pay a visit. On a permanent basis!!!! Only joking!!! I do think it would look right at home though..... Thanks David. Well I have made further progress with the roof sections. I was not happy with how it looked, the finish looked too even so I decided to give it more attention. First I sprayed the individual sections unevenly with a light grey paint before giving them a couple of washes of weathered black. Then earlier I sprayed over them with some roof dirt and now it looks much better. Hopefully over the weekend I can add the final touches with some more weathered black. Then I can get the skylight tops assembled, painted and added before finishing off the industrial roof vents. Earlier today whilst browsing the Internet I came across what I think is a solution to something that has been puzzling me for the past few weeks. Very happy, fingers crossed it works! More on that once the skylight tops are ready to be fixed in place. I was hoping to post a photo taken from the bank at Toton looking across to the depot showing what appears to be a dark roof but unfortunately my computer has decided that my scanner isn't connected. But it is!! Very frustrating..... More over the weekend.
Crisis Rail
Hi Guy, thanks I hadn’t considered Klear. I will add that to my list of products to test. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks Class66. Boxenby Twin Peaks Black and white These two will become 45052 Nimrod and 45141 Zephyr. Dont know whether I mentioned this before but some Traction in that image are very expensive as we all know. All good stuff lucky and good to have - they are as rare as Rocking Horse ... wonder if Baccy will ever do a retooled run?
Grimleygrid
Hi Ian, they are very rare and I am pleased to have got my hands on a couple. Don’t worry you won’t have to wait too long before Bachmann release a retooled version the confirmation being me having purchased the above! Like a lot of people I would really like Bachmann to release a sealed beam 45/1. Come on Bachmann, please! A bit more progress over the weekend. I have now finished spraying the roof sections and happy with how they now look. Now that the roof sections are ready to receive the skylights I can now crack on with them........hopefully this week I can make a start on assembling them. The industrial roof vents have received further attention. The vents had been sprayed matt black and yesterday I masked off the bases and gave them a coat of grey primer. Hopefully tomorrow evening they can be given a top coat of a slightly darker grey and then they will be ready for weathering.

Grimleygrid
Thanks Class66. Last night I gave the conical roof vents a top coat of darker grey: I removed the masking tape from one of them to see how if would look on the roof: Four in a line: Now the conical tops need toning down with some weathering, weathered black washes and the bases require rusting up using washes of browns. I am preparing for the first attempt at assembling a skylight top hopefully at the weekend.
RBE
This is all looking very good Alex, for some god forsaken reason I hadn't clicked the 'follow' on this even though I look in quite a lot. Just realised that I hadn't seen the layout (?) for a while and noticed no clicky in the follow box!! Soon remedied. Good to see some peak action on here too. I've really taken to them since adopting the period for Millers Dale. Took me right back to being a whipper snapper on Sheffield station back in '83! I was just thinking of 45's today actually and that as a kid, me, my mates, and my mates dad used to call em Grots. Now I've looked it up and cant find any reference to that as a nickname for em, was it only our little group that called em that? I certainly don't remember making it up and we used standard nicknames for everything else. Odd. Cav
Grimleygrid
Thanks Cav. Your 45110 is a bit special! Me too, I have always liked Peaks. Shame Bachmann don’t do more with their offering, fingers crossed for next year! You talking about seeing them at Sheffield reminds me of half-term in February 1988 when I ventured up to Nottingham on a Sunday to ride behind a Peak. Cannot remember exactly the full details but on certain Sunday’s, may have been due to engineering works, Nottingham to Sheffield/Leeds services were booked for a 45. Oh and diverted via Toton! So to go past Toton depot behind a Peak was rather nice! What a trip that was.......
Grimleygrid
Last night I unmasked the rest of the industrial roof vents ready for touching up and weathering. I then decided to put them in position to see how they will look on the roof: I am hoping to get the skylight tops primed and a top coat of grey added over the weekend to allow assembly to start next week.
P.C.M
Hi Alex, Stunning, that roof looks superb. I had forgotten how big this thing is going to be, hope the glazing goes well. Whats next on the job list? Cheers Peter.

Grimleygrid
Hi Peter and David, thanks. I am quite pleased with the roof although not sure if it is a bit too dark but I think I am going to go with it. Looking at some photos and video clips between 1990 and 1992 and it certainly looks dark grey to me. Hopefully the glazing will go well, fingers crossed! Next job? Well now that is a good question! My plan is to get the skylights on so that the roof sections are finished and then move on to the inspection pits. The target/aim is to get the lights added, the majority of which will be dummy lights with only a couple of roads actually having working lights, to the inspection pits by Christmas. I would also like to get the pits wired up and glued down permanently. Hopefully this can be achieved! Then after that get the inspection platforms weathered and ready to put in place. After that get the concrete floor down....... Still progress is being made, I am motivated! This photo has really helped: If I can replicate the depot scene I will be really chuffed! Coal sector type 5s, choppers and even a metals 60 on the fuelling point, superb! I have had a rethink with regards to the glazing. Whilst I was originally happy with the polypropylene the more I thought about it decided to get some acrylic cut to size for the different size skylight tops and I am glad that I did. The new parts are superb and will look great once glued to the tops. Now to get the skylight tops primed and sprayed ready for assembling.
mason
Love the pic of the choppers mate. This is coming on so much. Really great work mate
Grimleygrid
Thanks Neil, I think I can see a little light at the end of the depot!! Yes it is a great photo, I didn't take it but purchased it. What a great time that was with choppers, 31s, Tractors, 47s, Grids, Bones and Brush's finest all to be seen running. Well I did manage to get a bit of work done on the skylight tops. With the help of Grimley Senior the skylight tops have been cut into two pieces to allow them to sit down on the differing planes. In order to cut them another jig was required: I decided to place a few of the skylight tops on the roof sections to see how it looked Then last night whilst working on the computer I looked round at the depot and saw this view It is amazing the difference just sitting those few pieces on the roof have on the depot.

mason
Alex this is looking so good mate, the amount of detail is superb and this has to be the best depot build/layout i have seen. Great work mate
Grimleygrid
Thanks David and Neil for the kind comments. Now that each skylight top has been cut, last night I prepared them ready for painting. As the forecast is for dry weather this weekend I plan to get them primed tomorrow and top coat sprayed on Sunday. Then weathered during the week to allow final assembly shortly thereafter. Hopefully! I have also been conducting research for the next project to tackle, this being the inspection pit lights. Over the past couple of days I have been working out how many are required, which materials to use for the different parts and ultimately deciding on how best to produce them. I think I have come up with what is required. More on that in the next week or so.
sdw7300
Hi Alex I've been a long time follower but haven't posted on this thread much as I haven't much to add other than to echo others praise - the craftmanship & attention to detail is amazing. Regarding inspection pit lighting can I suggest this thread here. It's 12 months old but has some good ideas. I actually bought some of the LED's in post #27 from Lyneux. (I haven't got round to fitting them yet though!). All the best
Grimleygrid
Hi Sam, many thanks for your kind comments. I cannot believe that in December it will be four years since I first made a start on this project. How time flies! Thanks for the link, I vaguely remember seeing that thread before but really pleased you have mentioned it as I went to Maplin’s on Friday lunchtime to get a couple of the little LEDs as suggested by Lyneux. Unfortunately they only had red ones but it gives me something to experiment with. I cannot believe how small they are! Over the weekend I also purchased another Peco inspection pit to be used for R&D purposes. Hopefully I will have more to add on this later in the week.
Grimleygrid
As the weather was dry over the weekend I decided to take full advantage and get the skylight tops painted: They just need weathering now before getting attached to the clear plastic. This gives an idea of what I am trying to achieve: I was very pleased with how it was progressing until yesterday evening when I noticed that several of the long skylight tops had become curved. Very frustrating to say the least........hopefully I can sort them out.
d winpenny
Still coming on great hope you can sort out the bending David
mason
Looks good mate, the skylights look great, a little bend here and there is pretty minimal in respect to the size of the depot mate Nice work

Grimleygrid
Thanks David, I think I have a solution. More on that later. Thanks Neil. Hi Daryl, yes there seems to be an issue with my Photobucket account which I am investigating. Some issue with bandwidth......
Grimleygrid
The curving/bending of the longer skylights was not acceptable and on some examples impossible to rectify. Replacements were sought and these arrived on Thursday. image by AP474, on Flickr Here you can see the new version sitting on the roof amongst the older ones. image by AP474, on Flickr They were given a coat of grey primer on Saturday but unfortunately the weather put paid to any further progress. image by AP474, on Flickr Here you can see them placed on the roof. image by AP474, on Flickr image by AP474, on Flickr There is a new arrival on shed. image by AP474, on Flickr I did really like 31s in that livery. Hopefully at some point this week I can give the new skylight tops a top coat of paint, subject to the weather of course!
