Ruston
And I also found an earlier black & white print of the Ruston shunter outside the loco shed. Probably sometime around 1956-60.

Mucky Duck
Rooting through some old colour slides of industrials I came across this one, believed to have been taken at Bury, Thorn & Sons' Huddersfield works sometime in 1961. Had I seen this in a collection of prototype images I wouldn't have twigged that it was a model… very impressive!
Andrew F
The pictures on this page are fantastic!. I reckon folks are getting such good lighting into the shots these days that the colour versions are working better then the B & W 's. Chris Nevard
Ruston, that first one is incredible! Agreed, the second one is pretty good too! I'm not always a fan of B&W because it often look muddy. but this one works really well! Andy Y - let's see this one top right
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted October 27, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 27, 2010 I think they're both superb and very realistic views, but in fact, I think that the colour photo has the edge on the BW one for believability.

S.A.C Martin
I tried doing something different with these two pics, really similar I know, but it was a bit of trial and error in changing the camera settings and setting up the smoke.

RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted October 28, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 28, 2010 Brilliant. The top one is very well thought out. Can I ask what the real distance is to the buildings in the background (if they are not photoshopped in, that is). I am interested in how much it takes to create such a sense of depth. S.A.C Martin
Brilliant. The top one is very well thought out. Can I ask what the real distance is to the buildings in the background (if they are not photoshopped in, that is). I am interested in how much it takes to create such a sense of depth. Neither of the photographs are photoshopped in any way - I adjust the settings on my camera and play about with light. The distance from the shed to the end buildings is approx 75cm. It's a light relief backdrop I use to change the scene up when filming for Youtube. The whole set is only a metre and a bit more long, in layman's terms its a bit longer in length, but the same in width, as the footprint for a second radius Hornby trackmat oval. All it takes is making sure the camera is at a height which is comparable to human sight, in scale with the locomotives and buildings. The rest, is a smoke machine giving the haze, a smoke generator in the locomotive, and careful adjustment of the settings on the camera. Thanks for the "likes" chaps - I've been watching this thread and looking over what I have, and trying to think of ways to make it all look better than it does in real life - most definitely, the smoke machine helps dividends.

magic_monkey09
not added to this topic before but here goes modelled on a random section of the GW mainline somewhere between paddington and Cardiff This scene shows 'First' engineers inspecting a section of track, usually a Network Rail job but with the current state of the infrustructure company TOC'S may become responsible for maintaining their own routes in the future
RMweb Gold SouthernRegionSteam Posted October 31, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 31, 2010 I think the standard of modelling is fantastic - keep it up guys! It has been suggested that this shot should make an appearance in this thread (even if the hangar is unfinished) - see what you think: A French import in the form of a French Military 4-6-0 in charge of a stores train waits in the loop for a modified Simplex hauling a rake of 4 wheeled passenger stock. The lighting is the layouts own (a single 2ft fluorescent tube running diagonally across the layout) and no modifications have been made to the photo at all apart from resizing.
Sandhills
Hi, now mine are nowhere near the standard exhibited throughout this thread, but here goes. And the same pic in black and white Andy Love the colour version. Hope you dont mind Andy, played around with your pic and came up with this -

Jenny Emily
I just got an email today saying that voting is now live in the NRM competition. I recognise an awful lot of the pictures in the competition from this thread. Good luck to everyone who entered. I have already had a guess at who I think will win and given the standard of entrants it certainly isn't me! There's some excellent shots been entered. Dear Entrant Thank you for sending us your model railway photographs for the ‘Is your model the rail thing?’ competition. The entries are now online at http://www.nrm.org.uk/modelcomp. Make sure you encourage your family and friends to get online and vote. Entries will also be on display at the two day Model Railway Weekend this Saturday and Sunday before voting closes on Monday 8th at midday. Good luck! From all at the National Railway Museum Ps. For more information about the event this weekend, visit http://www.nrm.org.uk/modelrailway - hope to see you all there!
