Level crossing stupidity...

It’s my biggest fear/worry while out driving, I always blow the horn at the rear of a train going the other way if there is a crossing in view

I’m like nidge, hand over the horn when passing a stationary train in a platform, just in case

I still remember a close call when arriving at Bletchley on an 8-car 310 down stopper. Some guy near the front decided it was too far to walk back to the footbridge, so opened the door and jumped out having to break into a run immediately. He did a big U-turn on the down platform and how he didn't get dragged into the 86 hauled up express on the other platform face I will never know. It was all the driver could do to blast on the horns at 100mph.....

Only banned for 6years and 11 months _ The question arises, "What do you actually have to do to get banned from driving for life?"

More to the point they don't take any notice of the bans anyhow... How many times have you read about someone who's already banned being caught again and having another ban added to the other one... Should be treated the same as gun or knife crime, if you are caught driving whilst banned it should be automatic jail sentence, as recent incidents have proved a vehicle is much more dangerous than a knife and can be as dangerous as a gun, it's about time it was treated that way...

Agree. A car is a dangerous, potentially lethal, machine.

[hobby horse mode]What grates me are those who call a car a lethal weapon. It's not a weapon, it's a machine. It could be used as a weapon but that is not its purpose. [/hobby horse mode]

The simple answer is that there are a huge number of disqualified drivers around, as well as many that have never had a licence.   There are now so few Road Traffic Officers who used to specialise in looking for people like that.  This the chances of getting caught are very low.   I won't go into the causes of this state of affairs as I would be expelled from the site.

That doesn't answer why we should be lenient on those that are caught though. The punishment doesn't fit the crime in my view as its clearly not a deterrent.

The same reason why there are less RTOs I suspect.

Namely MONEY (prison etc is expensive).

When having a cab-ride from St-Lazare to Le Havre, I noticed the driver sounded his horn when approaching any station where there was already a train on the other platform.

It used to be in the rule book that we did this, it's been removed now

That's right, it used to be the Rule, till those that decided they liked the convenience of living near a station started whinging about train noise!

They don't have any

As an avid watcher of subtitled French comedies, I can assure you that they have. It tends rather towards the black end of the spectrum, though, which probably explains the posters.

The general standard of driving is on a downward scale ,everyone is in such a hurry overtaking is the most important thing and as has been said hardly any police on the roads .

I'm not totally convinced about that, I can remember my Dad moaning about other drivers back in the 60s and saw plenty of bad driving when I started in the 70s (I was probably one of them!)... What I do think is that roads have become far busier and thus we see more of it,,,

Ah - but bad driving with 1960's/70's power to weight ratio wasn't in the same league as bad driving with today's monsters !
