Went out for a meal last night and the restaurant owner obviously has a bit of a thing for old English cars.  Ford Escort Estate, Hillman Hunter Estate and a very nice Riley.  Plus and Alfa Romeo of some sort.

Where did all those Hillman Hunters, Vauxhall Vivas, Avengers and Ford Escorts go? When I started driving in the late 80's, almost every other car was one of the above, if it wasn't a Sierra or Fiesta.

As I recall the rustiest motors back in the 70's were Vauxhall and BLMC........although to be fair the Fords were bring up the rear and leaving a trail of brown flaky bits in their wake :D

That's a moggy box isn't it..???

Yep. 1098 ribbed box. I broke the bellhousing when I took the engine out, purely my own fault, I didn't support the box properly, and as the engine came out, the top edge of the bellhousing was supporting the combined weight of engine & box, and a piece broke off. Looking at the break, it's not clean, there is muck in there, so I think it was fractured anyway.

So I've got hold of a spare bellhousing and transferred the innards over. The silver lining is that I've renewed the 1st & 3rd motion shaft bearings, which were getting worn, and the needle bearings inside the laygear, along with the layshaft. I also renewed first gear, as some of the teeth were roughly broken and fractured, so I may have avoided a catastrophic failure.

Ha.. Top man!

I made one good box out of two non working donors quite some time ago....first gear gets pretty mangled doesnt it !

I got away with only having to buy a few bits, bearings etc, ( + a few odd ebay bargain components )

i used " selective assembly" with the best parts of each donor box..it worked fine when dropped into a car anyway.. .I've still got a load of bits buried somewhere, probably enough to make another box, tho a fair few parts would need replacing as these were the rejected parts from the two.

Nice job there, and good to see someone else doing it too!..:good_mini:

I think a lot of people think repairing a box is a bit daunting, but really it's no worse than an engine. Holds no fears for me now, and I now have a far better understanding of how it works.

You're quite right, people have always been a bit frightened of gearboxes thinking they're too complex....a myth promoted by gearbox recon firms !

These are very simple old school mechanism really, and as you say, you've gained some valuable experience, standing you in good stead for the next job.

The MM I did the box for was flogged soon after, as I had too many old motors at the time. My daily driver is an old Land Rover ( which I've also had in bits !)  but,  I've got another 'dead' Moggy that needs to be got running etc etc, something to crack on with this summer..( as well as creating the next railway layout I'm planning of course)

Now let's all try that on an Audi DSG Gearbox, with no Haynes Manual and no special tools....

Electronics will have died expensively before mechanical work is required!

All the best

We've been doing that round the side of the house keeping a really old Countax ride-on lawnmower more or less alive and functioning for over 20 years now.

It seems to be like old Aga cookers - the agents are all too posh to bother with anyone less than waBenzi E class owners.

Funnily enough I was going to say the same thing yesterday too

I’ve had 2 VW Phaetons with dodgy DSG boxes

Anything over 10 years old seems to count these days as "old" for this thread and there's plenty of DSG 'boxes older than that! I would prefer it if our "under 25s" (car age-wise) set up their own thread, though, perhaps called "Modern Classics(!)" or similar so we can concentrate on the genuine old cars...

Perhaps we should take a leaf out of the DVLA's book and regard anything first registered over 40 years ago (and so exempt from road tax and the MOT) as "old".

In reality, such definitions of what is an old car aren't really relevant and it is more of a subjective thing, but some of the cars that have been discussed  lately aren't there yet.

Were they DSG boxes that went in the Phaeton? I thought all the bigger engined VW/Audi vehicles used the Tiptronic boxes as we had the A6 which certainly had the Tiptronic fitted.

Also had a Q3 which had the S-Tronic box and to be honest it was the nicest auto we have ever used.

Plenty of Tiptronic style boxes on cars more than 10 years old. The earlier ones seem all to have been rather "fragile". I would not want one but then I am a Luddite that does not want complicated tech of any sort on the car. Just more things to go wrong in my book. Often wish that I  still had my 1978 Volvo 245. I can't remember anything at all going wrong with that and it always came off best in any shunt. Kit currently being developed to put electric drive in the 2-series Volvo. I wonder if I can find a cheap one somewhere?
