Can't remember if this loco ran for a while with the Loadhaul branding on one side only? Indeed, she never did get the second side done, from what I can ascertain. One I intend to recreate in a smaller scale so thanks for posting images. Some of your previous have been incredibly useful reference material as well, ta! C6T. eastwestdivide
... 56043 & 56036 at Stratford heading what I presume is a stone train to Purfleet. ... Guess so. Here's one coming in the opposite direction, March 1985, 56036 again: and a light engine at Barking, presumably to do with the Purfleet working, also 1985, 56049: And trying to be a bit more arty, a deliberate blur. 1987. Rivercider
Class 56's at Westbury c.1983 56031 comes off shed while 56032 rumbles through. 56038 Westbury 1983 Cheers Steve Very nice, that brings back memories. You have captured two of my former BR workplaces. In 1991 as a result of the Sectorisation re-organisation I moved to Westbury and worked for two years for Trainload Freight. For a few weeks the office was temporarily located in Farrs building as seen above 56031 in the distance, I then spent a few months in an office in the down yard as seen above 56038, the top floor of which was the TOPS Office, cheers

locoholic
The sun does shine sometimes on the Blyth and Tyne. Here's a grid northbound across the viaduct over the River Blyth. What's the official name of this structure? And here's another view of the chimneys visible in the previous shot. You get to visit some real beauty spots chasing trains. This location has changed a lot since this photo - I think the power station has gone, and the sidings are all derelict, and the staithes that were beyond the sidings have gone too. And at Winning Junction this lovely junction signal has been replaced by two ordinary semaphores.

What's the official name of this structure? Cl56Blyth Viaduct.jpg Hi locoholic Wish I could help with the name of the viaduct.. I have this photo and on my original slide I'd called it Sleekburn Viaduct. IIRC there are two similar viaducts in the area, and if this is the same location as your photo (River Blyth) it's not the Sleekburn...!... and I've given my photo the wrong title. So I'd also be interested to know its official name. and without going off topic- that does look like 56 on the bridge.... Alan

I hope you won't mind my commenting on the viaducts on the Blyth and Tyne but I live nearby. I think the first of your photos is the viaduct over the River Wansbeck, from West Sleekburn on the south bank to Ashington on the north bank. It is known as the Sleekburn Viaduct It can't be the River Blyth viaduct as the power station was on the north side of the River Blyth, in your photo they are shown to the south. Also for a northbound train the A189 (spine road) viaduct would just behind the railway viaduct. The second photo shows the sidings swerving Blyth West staithes, which were actually on the north bank of the river. The chimneys belong to Blyth "A" Power station, which came into full operation in 1966 and finally closed in 2001 and was then demolished. Alan I think your photo is, as you say, the viaduct over the River Wansbeck, known as the Sleekburn viaduct. A photo of the River Blyth viaduct is below. locoholic
Lovely photos. What was the 56 doing on the post train? Here's a couple of earlier ones. 56003 on a railtour (The Grid Iron Grice) at Walsall on 7th Aug 1982. I recall it did a number of freight lines I wanted. And a more mundane duty: 56056 at Saltley on 13th Oct 1982, presumably heading for Didcot Power Station.

60091
Lovely photos. What was the 56 doing on the post train? Hi locoholic Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to you. IIRC at that time the 56s were being attached to take the vans down to the Royal Mail depot at Low Fell - top and tail with the 86 which would later take the train south. Not sure how long this working lasted. I assume it ended when the 325s arrived. Usually I think the 56 only worked Tyne Yard-Low Fell, however, somewhere I think have photos of the train running south on the ECML with the diesel still attached at the rear. lippy
The 56s were used as super shunters for the Low Fell mail Traffic. We had an 09 based there but if that failed or we wanted an earlier finish we would borrow a 56 for the last 2 trains 1V28 the Bristol TPO and 1M91 to (PRDC) London TPO. 325s where booked on other services 1S04 Willesden PRDC to Shieldmuir, Willesden PRDC to Low Fell 1E93 and 1M78 Low Fell Willesden PRDC. The Shunter on the ground is I D Jackson now left the industry can't make out the Driver.
