The day the music died....or so we thought at the time.

56078, Warrington Arpley in the early hours of 31st March 2004 with 6E37 to Doncaster. 56078 would go on to play it's part in the Grid Gooybye railtour later that day.

I didnt realise 56078 was the large logo 'retro' grid, of course now with colas and one of my regulars!!

Those wolverton trains, would they have gone over the bletchley branch from oxford?

Thanks Brian, I was only 11 when the stone trains stopped running to Wolverton.

Yes jim, from books I've read they did run over the flyover.

Which is funny as that line runs at the back of my house. Only get a few loco's running on it now and again.

Your picture above is most likely to be Pathfinder's “Manchester Excursion/Marauder” tour on January 27th 2001 Derek.

56078 & 56115 were the only locomotives involved in the farewell.

56111 was a 'big' cop for haulage and the only other tour I know of she did (in Loadhaul at least) was the “Wig and Weasel” but that was a Hertfordshire spinner, Blackburn to Doncaster 8/3/03.

With the setting sun glinting off the side of the locomotive, 56042 heads along the Midland main line at Chiltern Green, just south of Luton.

attachicon.gif56042 Chiltern Green 1989 RMWeb.jpg

56042, by far the worst of the class. Remember secondmaning on it in the mid 80s by could this thing slip. We had it on a job from a siding between Easington and Seaham known as Hawthorn junction. This was a short lived job while they built the white elephant that was Dawson's rapid loader.

This loco had a hell of a job getting out of there, I was driving while the guard layer sand down, took us ages. Nowadays there would have been massive delay charges as we must have put loads of time into other trains. The other thing I remember about it was how the bogie's graunched when going round curves
