The first one is of an SNCF Calais-Dover ferry. It was on the west side of the M1 somewhere north of Nottingham. If you look closely you can see some locos. Does anyone have any ideas? Your car is just about to pass over the road from Pinxton to Kirkby-in-Ashfield, just south of Junction 28 on the motorway. The colliery is Brookhill Colliery. Oh yes he does (or rather did in those days) because he had to travel through the section in the right direction (or, exceptionally, go by road) in order to introduce the Single Line Working - but he then remains at the end where trains enter the section until the SLW is withdrawn. The Maid of Kent was the first ferry I crossed the channel on, circa 1962.
