The only time I ever went abroad with my father was a day trip by hoovercraft (!) to Calais. The trip out was choppy, with sick bags being deployed by several others, and the return trip was cancelled, so we got a free trainride to Boulogne and came back by ferry!

Something of a lucky dip today.  The only thing they have in common is that they all form a part of my 1967 trip to France.

A lot of those vans behind the BB12000 look low enough to be ferry vehicles. Shame the markings aren't legible, but they're in the right places.

I've had a look at the original negative and they are not legible there either.  Sorry.

Some more for this evening.

3 of them were taken from the family car on the M1.  The first one is of an SNCF Calais-Dover ferry.

I don't know which colliery the next two are of.  It was on the west side of the M1 somewhere north of Nottingham.  If you look closely you can see some locos.  Does anyone have any ideas?

In the first colliery shot, you can clearly see the MR's Pinxton signal cabin on the far left. Your car is just about to pass over the road from Pinxton to Kirkby-in-Ashfield, just south of Junction 28 on the motorway.

The colliery is Brookhill Colliery.

We'll start off tonight with a couple of shots of SNCF and British Rail ferries at Calais and Dover before moving back to Yorkshire.

4498 then reversed the train across the trailing crossover onto the down fast line before setting off north again.

Who can remember why? (Sorry - no prizes).

Single line working over the up lines would be an obvious guess.

Agree - SLW for Down trains over the Up Fast, while Up trains ran over the Up Slow

That's right,  but what had happened on the ECML north of York some weeks before which required the down lines to be shut at weekends?

31 July 1967 - DP2-hauled train collided with derailed Cliffe-Uddingston cement train at Thirsk.

Correct - the accident was while I was in France, I was surprised they were still clearing up 3 weeks later.

And the Pilotman never gets to travel through the section until normal working is resumed!

Oh yes he does (or rather did in those days) because he had to travel through the section in the right direction  (or, exceptionally, go by road) in order to introduce the Single Line Working - but he then remains at the end where trains enter the section until the SLW is withdrawn.

That building behind the Cote d'Azur is styill in use as a passenger terminal at Calais.

The Maid of Kent was the first ferry I crossed the channel on, circa 1962.

I, too learned in, and had an Anglia 105E as my first car, BFU 416B.

Hi David,

Following lengthy delays with my Dent project which is now back on track its been a very nice interlude wandering through your photograph collection, some lovely little gems in there and really appreciated from this end as it brings back many trackside memories or days gone forever. Many thanks please keep them coming.
