JeffP
Now that I can't say. There used to be another just north of Torksey, where the line from Lincoln to Doncaster via west Burton Power Station crossed the Trent, but that's been closed years. Even the bridge over the road has been removed now.

JeffP
A very few for a start today, to keep them, as far as possible, in area sets, although these are a bit mixed. 37505 and 47369 face each other at Frodingham. The end of Skegness station, looking SW. And looking roughly SE, a two car dmu and a class 31 are in the station. The class 31 is revealed as 31101, with a variant livery. Sorry about the bar across it, the photo is pre-digital, so couldn't be previewed, and was taken through a chain-link fence. HST with power car 43086 leading, passes Ratcliffe on Soar power station with a southbound service. 118 miles to go to it's destination, apparently.
JeffP
A few more for tonight. I'm steadily scanning in my ones I've en out of storage. Some are a right pain as they are almost ruined by an all-over orange tint, which I put dfown to dirty developer? Anyway, on we go: A pair of class 37's making their way into a westering sun at Melton Ross, with the loaded ore train. Lucky photo: two ore trains cross at the same bridge, looking west this time. Plenty of clag. The wagons are loaded about 50% more than nowadays when the train is in the hands of a single 66. Lass 37, 37040 with a train of steel strip, heading west. Class 47, 47224 heads east with empty TTB tanks, it's powering away from Barnetby. Class 37/0, 37068 heading west with more steel strip. Class 56 with a heavily loaded coal train heading west. And a 2-car dmu heading east. Class 31 with steel bogie empties heading west. For a short time Cleethorpes had a through service to King's Cross. Here, the return working powers east into Barnetby, with 43071 leading. And 43058 bringing up the rear. Class 56 entering Barnetby from the east, light engine. ore train empties entering Barnetby from the west with 37381 leading. The same train leaving Barnetby. The evening sunshine highlights a pair of class 31's waiting for the road at Barnetby with empty tanks for one of the refineries, while a Sprinter heads east for Cleethorpes. Now this one is in amongst those photos, but I'm unsure where it is? Longsight? Class 90, 90013 stabled. It clearly isn't from the previous set, nor does it belong with the next set. Any help with the location gratefully received.
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted January 12, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 12, 2014 Aah, memories. Thanks Jeff. Used this train to go to the famous/infamous MRJ exhibition during my sojourn/sentence in Cleethorpes Mike. JeffP
Thanks David. Corrections made. I've no idea why I typed Elsham, i was thinking of that AWFUL not-very-level crossing at Appleby when I typed it. Keep correcting any mistakes, please, everyone, it helps with the thread and for people maybe doing research. I don't reckon much to special trains, to be honest, much preferring the chance of seeing something worthwhile, ...or no...that came with everyday trips out. But on this occasion, a mate asked me along to see one, so we ended up at a level crossing on a minor road, SE of Carlton on Trent, near Newark. The location being chosen as best for video. EWS livereid 67006 is seen with the first special, heading towards Lincoln. And then along came a kettle.....sorry, Flying Scotsman, on a service to iirc Cleethorpes, but it might have been Lincoln. (The author has nothing against kettles and none were harmed in the making of this thread). Unidentified class 37 in railfreight livery emerges from Keadby bridge with another train of steel strip. At this time, the strip, although manufactured in the UK, was exported to afaik, Germany for some treatment we couldn't do, then re-imported for use. Class 56 on a train of mgr wagons is framed by the footbridge at Althorpe. Tinsley "White Rose" depot plaque on a class 47, probably at Frodingham. Sorry it's blurred, but I've included it to show that the class 31's got some use on heavy trains. This one is heading east at Appleby. And 56090 heads towards Scunthorpe with a heavily loaded train of coal. Repainted into triple grey, class 08, 08397, a long-time resident of Frodingham, stands outside the shed. Class 47, 47212, stands at the rear of Frodingham depot, the Immingham "Star of the East" depot plaque prominent. 56028, light engine, heading east at Appleby. Class 31, 31210 (I think) powering west with a pw train at Appleby.
JeffP
First two, I am genuinely at a loss: only place I can think of is Wolverton? Loughborough Central, GCR. Class 08 10 shunter, repainted in green as D4067. Three shots of almost new class 60, 60007 coming under the Brigg Road bridge at Scunthorpe, then in the west yard...the lighting is just right to see inside the loco. Two shots of a pair of Romanian-built class 56's at Toton, on the left 56012, "Maltby Colliery" and on the right, 56015. front end line-ups at Toton, classes 20, 56 and 58 are on view. Last for tonight, just another class 56...or is it? Look closely at the bogies...they are designated CP3 and were the test bogies for those fitted under the class 58. 56042 at Toton, mid 80's. JeffP
Thanks, I'd never have got that. This next set is of a visit to London with a friend, I believe it to be mid to late 80's, and may have been the time we took our caravan down and stayed on a campsite near to Balls Pond? Euston, and at the bufferstops, class 81, 81012 has brought in the empty stock for another northbound service. Same place, different bufferstops, and the front ends of classes 86 and 90 can be compared. At the other end, class 90, 90045 in triple grey livery waits to leave for the north. The next set are all Stewart's Lane. Of all London sheds, that one and Stratford gave me the most pleasure, the new diesel and electric depots mixed in with parts of the old steam shed and the old works was very atmospheric. We used to enter SL via a back entrance off the Silverthorne Road, through the grounds of a sausage factory. We never had any trouble getting round. Class 33, 33037, stands in the remains of the old steam shed at Stewart's Lane. Judging by the very faded paintwork, the loco is withdrawn. Class 73/0, 73002 and class 33, 33060 in the yard beside the shed at Stewart's Lane. The sky is still overcast to the north, but the sunshine highlights class 73/0, 73002. Not one, but TWO breakdown cranes were present at the rear of the depot. Class 73/1, 73137, "Royal Observer Corps" stands outside the electric shed at Stewart's Lane. Class 33/0. 33052 "Ashford" is also outside the electric shed. A shed we always found difficult was Selhurst. That was until we found out about about Tennison Road as a stabling point. Visiting there, one day, we followed a track alongside the lines and wound up at the front of Selhurst depot, well away from the offices on the road entrance. We got strange looks walking OUT, but no-one challenged us. The track took us right past the diesel fuelling point. Class 73/0, 73003 poses outside Selhurst depot. 73003 again, same place, the sunlight nicely highlights the underframe detail. At Tennison Road were stabled three class 73's. This is 73131, "County of Surrey". Face to face are 73108 and 73001. Here are the three locos stabled. I found this more handsome than the yellow stripe livery, class 73/1, 73108 in early engineer's grey First built, class 73/0, 73001 at Tennison Road.
Vin
Hi Jeff, Great photos from London. I can almost get the date of this trip. It must have been either the first or second week of July 1990. For a couple of reasons 90045 was brand new and borrowed by Intercity for WCML services for the first couple of months. 73137 was also ex works and a rare photo in that livery before it was renumber 73202. 73003 was also ex works (note the bogie condition compared to the body). 81012 was on its last legs on the ECS runs from Euston to Willesden carriage sidings. Hope this helps Vin
JeffP
Brilliant, yes. I didn't think it was as late, but it could have been. Were there still all-grey engineers' locos at that time?
jonny777
Yes Jeff, 73108 was listed as all over grey with black cab doors in both my 1990 and 1991 Platform 5 books.
JeffP
Must have been around then. That ties in with us taking the caravan, then, we bought it in 1988, sold it on in 1993.
JeffP
For tonight, another couple of London sheds, starting at Stratford. Class 47 livery variations, with one of Tinsley's unofficial namers on show. And a couple of shots of RES liveried 47533. Classs 47/9, 47976, "Aviemore Centre" in overall engineers' grey, in front of the running shed at Stratford. Around this time, some of the class 56's moved to the southern. Here is 56078 at Hither Green...another much loved shed. Class 33/0, 33050, "Isle of Grain" at Hither Green. And here is "slim-jim" class 33/2, 33202 at Hither Green. View of front ends at Hither Green, with classes 33 and 73 on show. Overall view of a crowded Hither Green looking towards the fueling point. And another view of 56078 down beside the shed building. This was the view that greeted us that day as we stepped off the station platform. The shed building is on the left and the fueling point in the right background.
Vin
Hi Jeff, You must have a knack of photographing locos in rare liveries. 47533 in parcels red (only ran for less than 9 months) before being smashed up at reading in 1991 by 47472. 47976 in department grey ex works condition. This also supports the July 1990 theory. I remember Hither Green on a weekend with loads of locos stabled there. The friendly staff letting us around. There only warning was watch out for the third rail! Cheers for the photos Vin

JeffP
At the time, I had zero idea either livery was rare, just that it was different to what I normally saw, so it got photographed if I could do so. Still on the same trip, and some more of what were, at that time, rare liveries. Class 50, 50030, I'm unsure where this is exactly, Clapham? I'm reliably informed it is. 56031, "Merehead" at Old Oak Common depot. Since preserved, 50033, "Glorious", stands beyond the turntable at Old Oak. Class 47, 47526 standing next to the above loco. Class 47, 47123, carrying another unofficial name, this time, probably the shortest ever carried by a loco, "Jay". 47582, "County of Norfolk" in NSE livery looking away from the turntable. Line up round the turntable, with 47583, "County of Hertfordshire" nearest the camera. Unidentified class 50's outside "the factory" at Old Oak Common. "The factory" was what the workforce called the repair shed. I am reliably informed that these are 50034 and 50039 Shunter line up outside the factory, with 08887 nearest the camera. Class 08, 08837 had just emerged in all over grey, and looks very smart, imho. An interesting shot taken just inside the factory, with class 47's under repair. I think the NSE livery completely altered the apparent nose shape of the locos. Edited January 14, 2014 by JeffP
Vin
Hi Jeff, More great photos. 50030 is heading west from Clapham junction. The Granada building in the background is on Saint John's Hill and is still there, without the Granada lettering. The unidentified class 50's at OC are freshly withdrawn 50034 furious (withdrawn 29/06/1990) still with its nameplates attached and 50039 behind it. Cheers Vin
JeffP
Brilliant, thanks. Post suitably amended. Class 81's withdrawn at Willesden, with 81009 closest to camera. The one behind, which is, I think, 81004, looks to have been in an accident, the nearest cab is noticeably drooping. front end comparison at euston, with 87006 "City of Glasgow" on the left and an unidentified class 90 on the right. Still at Euston, class 86, 86627, "The Industrial Society" stands at the north end of the platforms. Triple grey liveried class 90 brings an express into Euston, attached to the DVT. Looks like 90045 again. Class 87 waiting to leave with a northbound express, I THINK the loco is "City of London". "Cock O' the North" We'll be back home, oop north again tomorrow, and a visit to Toton again. Edited January 14, 2014 by JeffP

JeffP
That's what I said, didn't I? LOL Corrected, thanks. Couldn't find the original, on which I would have used my jeweller's loup, there are photos in packets everywhere here............ I HAD them all piled up in order, then the wife happened past.... Some of you may be pleased to know that I've ordered some new photo-mounts, so we can have a look at some early stuff from 1972 or so, onwards, at a later date. I may also try scanning some negatives, since a lot of the early photos are a horrid orange colour. Cheap developing wasn't what we thought it was at the time. JeffP
Class 56 heads a heavily loaded coal train round the curves at Althorpe, before crossing the Trent and tackling the Gunhouse Bank up into Scunthorpe. And the other main requirement of the local steelworks, iron ore, arrives at the works' ore terminal, headed by a pair of class 37's. Now I THINK this one is taken west of Crowle, near to Godnow Bridge, class 45/0, 45033 with bogie steel empties heading east. Interesting signpost on the gate nearby. Probably worth a few bob........ Bet it's not there now. Another class 45/0, this time 45037, also heading east. Framed by the footbridge at Althorpe Station, a class 31 rounds the curves from the Keadby canal swing bridge, with a train of what looks like empty tanks returning to one of the Humber bank refineries. Class 56 with coal empties crossing Keadby Bridge. And going the same way, a class 37 brings a short train consisting of two 4-wheel tank wagons and a pair of bogie steel carriers, carrying what looks like steel sections, (aka "girders"). Good train for modellers. Post 131 there's a splitbox 37 coming off a bridge. This is 37096, the only one to receive that peculiar paint job at the bottom of the nose.[/quote Thanks to D6975 For some time in the late 80's, the line was host to a Liverpool-Cleethorpes-Liverpool service that ran via Doncaster, Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly. The train was hauled by a class 31/4 often allocated to Immingham, and was made up of MkII electrically heated stock. Here, the Cleethorpes bound service is about to pass through Althorpe Station. It must have been summer and a hot day, all the windows in the coaches are open. Class 45 returning, probably to Tinsley, light engine, emerging from Keadby Bridge. JeffP
Tonight we are in the east midlands again, chasing class 58's. Inside the depot are newly built 58050 "Toton Traction Depot, and 58020, "Doncaster Works" carrying the second style of nameplate it had. And here is 58020 outside the shed. And 58046 Nameplate of 58050 A pair of class 20's, 20151 and 20108 frame the namplate of class 58 "Littleton Colliery". 58050 posing behind what looks like a pair of class 20 bogies. 58031 at, I THINK Barrow Hill? It might be Shirebrook though. Nameplate of 58050 I'm pretty sure this is Shirebrook rear of the depot, with 58025 stabled. And finally, the nameplate of class 58, "Cottam Power Station". Bit monotonous tonight, sorry.
