Hi

Since the Metropolitan was not part of any of the Big Four groups until the November 1937 acquisition by the LNER, I would vote for 'pre-grouping'. (The 'Big Four' did not get revised to 'Big Five' when the LPTB was formed, therefore the LPTB was not a railway group, QED.)

Apologies for the bump but just a small correction to the above. The Met was never part of the LNER. What happened in November 1937 was that the responsibility for working the LT hauled passenger trains north of Rickmansworth in addition to the Met Line goods services was acquired by/ transferred to the LNER which on nationalisation passed to the British Transport Commission (ie British Railways). The Met became part of LPTB from July 1st 1933 as part of a revised London Passenger Transport Bill published originally on March 13th 1931 which the Met fought against what it saw as "the predatory proposals of the late Socialist Government (!!)." After much discussion  with government, the Met directors reluctantly agreed to the Bill feeling that they had been "backed into a corner." Further discussions resulted with all major issues resolved and during the 1932-33 parliamentary session the Bill went represented and this time passed, receiving Royal Assent on April 13th 1933.

Hope that is of some use- please ask if you need any more info or details, I'm afraid that I am a bit obsessed when it comes to the Metropolitan Railway....

Well my Metropolitan pair turned up today and are currently running in. Superb with a multitude of subtle differences :) I've long had a soft spot for these and came very close to buying an O tinplate one as they look right but fortunately these were announced just in time so I can indulge in a little Metropolitan alternative theme when the mood takes me on the OO layout :)

Oh dear Paul......I was just logging on to post that I have finally succumbed and ordered John Milton from Hattons with next day delivery.

Hope I have a bit more luck. I hope also that Sherlock is still available next week when it's payday!

A little extra item might have just slipped in to my basket, cough cough, a Class 128 in early blue with syp was just too much to resist at £52

Keep the photos coming!

For anyone interested here is a comparison.

The left one is a Harrow/Radley Kit rebuilt from a old kit by myself and is driven by black beetle motor bogies. The middle is the Heljan model. To the right is a MTK brass kit bought ready made and powered by a triang motor bogie and pickup set.

Interesting to see how similar and yet different models of the same class of loco can be.

I've just done the same, but full yellow ends on my 128....two vehicles I cannot possibly justify......but the Bo-Bo's are stunning :senile:

Hattons were good and it's gone back already so hopefully a new one next week. It's a stunning model and I'm assuming something jammed as it was very sweet in the first direction. There was little difference in speed.

Both locos on the rollers before meltdown.

And the one that behaved itself

Noticing the comparison picture in post 306, here's another one to compare - my treasured very first model train, very early 1960s but a relatively modern picture:

post-1311-0-45713000-1443120608.jpg

Made from hardwood, Triang coach bogies and Transcontinental wagons.  Special feature - Acton Works paint job.  My father also began a more sophisticated model from wood, full panelling, window and door detail, and Triang 2-BIL motor bogie, and all this done before he obtained a drawing - now there are dozens of drawings to call on!  In those times my father and I could only dream of an RTR model.  I'm delighted that the Heljan models are here to enjoy, now.

IIRC some of the Southern EMU's used the same motors as in the Bo-Bo's.

My John Milton Metropolitan liveried one turned up yesterday from Hattons, very well packed I must add.

It looks even better than the photos. There are so many separately fitted pipes etc. The livery is superb with the additional lining over the later versions. Everything seems to be nicely fixed in place, but I would echo the words of others that these locos should be handled more like a super detailed steam loco.

The other thing that struck me was how small it is, mind you it did arrive along with a Class 128 DPU which dwarves the Metropolitan loco. It truly is one of the nicest looking locos I own, the level of lining being equivalent to a Hornby Pullman or Maunsell Coach in olive green Southern livery. It may well end up being my favourite OO loco, it really is that good.

I hope to give it a test run later today, but I dont currently have a layout so I need to put a test track together. I will try and take some photos as well.

Oh dear 'John Milton' ran beautifully in one direction but didn't go in the other and then SMOKE! One very dead loco :(

Very sorry to hear that, hopefully it gets sorted.

Happy to say that mines just spent a half hour on the rollers in DC going each direction, quite happily with all the lights on an bright.  I have a decoder for it that i'll install sometime before taking it to a friends layout for some real test running in.

Makes up for the rest of my day which was layout demolition at my parents house to pack away my layout.

I nearly succumbed to one today. Impulse purchase because it looked so sweet in Metropolitan livery. Unfortunately the last one in the shop, and some of the steps and pickup detailing was broken on inspection so I left empty handed, for now. I suspect I will not be able to resist the impulse purchase for long.

Well it's been back to be made smokeless (is that fitting a 'defeat device?')

The new one runs beautifully in both directions, just need the decoders to arrive.

I was browsing the Radley site yesterday. They have stopped selling the Bo-Bo kit but appear to still have resin bodies, floor, bogies and flush glazing available for £42.....+ £40 for the Tenshodo.

Phil stopped selling them as soon as the Heljan model was announced. He told me that he had absolutely no choice in the matter, as enquiries and orders simply stopped dead. He withdrew the kit from his range sometime later. I bought several Bo-Bos from him some months aftewards whch comprised the resin components only, but without motors (Black Beetles), which I sourced myself from Branchlines, and hence they have twin motors as a result. I imagine that he had a stock of bodies, etc. on hand when Heljan made their announcement but to keep stockholding costs down he probably only bought in the motors and wheelsets against specific orders.

His body shell does have its shortcomings, particularly the steps, but that can be rectified.
