In the railway room, in true W S Gilbert style, I've got a little list.

 

On the list go all the minor repair jobs and odd things that need/are worth doing but which are, of themselves, so insignificant that if I didn't write them down I'd forget all about them. So, things like "build Pentowan" don't go on the list, because they're bl00dy obvious every time I go in the railway room, but others like "sort out in-track fouling point markers" do, because otherwise they'd never get done.

 

 

Here's the problem. When I laid the storage loops a few years ago, I planted the bamboo cocktail sticks to show where the fouling points are and also stuck labels on the track as well. The cocktail sticks are fine but, over time, the labels have not worn so well and have started to come loose and/or curl up - in some cases to the extent that they stuck themselves to the underside of a train and disappeared from view entirely until a bit of detective work using the sequence sheets tracked them down. So, they went on the list.

 

Last night I decided to do something about them, so I cut some 10mm-wide strips of the trusty .040" styrene, on to which I stuck new labels. A simple and repetitive job that, accompanied by some nice music, whiled away an hour or two before bed time.

 

Today, I ripped out all the old labels and stuck the new markers down with Blu-Tac.

 

 

I think they look much neater and should stay in place for a bit longer than the old ones.

 

What's next on the list? Buffer stops, I think - four LM&S kits (for Porthmellyn Road Spurs and Up Sidings) and two ex-Mainly Trains ones, designed by the late Iain Rice, of course (for Wheal Veronica).

"Inter-City makes the going easy". In 1969 I was invited to photograph a young, miniskirted married lady, whose knickers had a double-arrow symbol and that slogan. I later discovered that hubby, a signalman, wasn't paying her much 'attention', but I was never in the frame to assist....

No layout work today, for a change. Instead, Veronica and I had a very nice lunch in the City, after which we went for a walk (two walks, actually) to look at some jacarandas. These came into bloom about three weeks late this year, because of the cold and very wet start to spring.

 

Here is Sydney Town Hall, with the Sydney Light Rail tracks in the foreground. These are catenary-free from here to Circular Quay, using the Alstom in-ground APS power supply system.

 

After enjoying these trees at Circular Quay, we took the ferry to Kirribilli where the displays are quite spectacular and extremely popular.

 

Carabella Street is just up from the ferry wharf...

 

...while McDougall Street has to be closed to vehicles at weekends, such are the crowds taking photos in the middle of the road.

 

A short stroll up the hill to Milsons Point station and the train home brought a very pleasant afternoon to an end.

Very pretty and a good reason to visit Sydney in November.  Would be a bit of a b*mmer to have had to return to U.K. this year before they came out!

 

I don’t remember light rail from my 2015 visit: is it new?
