SCRATCHBUILDING AN EX LSWR G6

Recommended Posts

Beautiful job Pete, you must be very pleased.

I am Chris

Would of been even more so, if I had of cleaned it ready for painting instead of playing with the blackening fluid. Mind you the wheels, buffers and couplings are now ready for te G6 and the dukedog.

Just wanted to say thank you for these postings.

It's made me drag out my G6 and redo the cab.

It was an early McGeowen with minimal cab detail, but I never knew what the interior looked like.

Floors now in, shelf fitted, wall cabinet attached and working on the tank extensions.

Isn't the internet wonderful? :)

Glad it has inspired you to add more detail. A lot of my work is an educated guess. I did as much as I could from the GA drawing, then I copied a bit from the O2 seeing as they are sisters. I could find no cab photos I expect no one wanted to waste film on such a lowly class.

After almost a week of wasting time, I got the loco cleaned and basking in the sunshine drying, I did get a little concerned about the whitemetal parts falling off. I was a tad warm when I brought it in. Next up is blackening the vulnerable bits, then a good clean with some thinners.

Here are the sum of the parts that need painting.

I managed over the last three days to get the loco up to black. I am pleased with the result. It actually looks better in the flesh than my quick snaps. I will try and get the red done tomorrow. Then I must start the lining.

Bit of a picture overload, but it is easier than me waffling on about nothing.

The frames first. Just need the red between the cylinder block and the firebox front.

The body cam out particularly well, one of the best first off for quite sometime. Slightly different process, and getting used to the new paint.

Now the sundry black bits, for the body and frames.

Just discovered this topic and dipped in here and there. Excellent stuff. The inside motion is quite delightful and I am envious of your skills in making it all by hand. It's a superb model and looks very fine in black (it would be almost a shame to weather it).

Henry Ford would be very proud.

Thanks Chris.

This years colour for me, looking at the to do's it might be next years too.

Stunning stuff Pete. Always the most exciting part of the build for me, watching the paint bringing it alive.

JF

Thanks Jon.

I do like the painting, even if I am not that good at it, also it generally means the end is in sight.

Thanks Chaz.

It is strange I look at your layout and buildings in exactly the same way. I still need to line it so after that it may need to be weathered to hide the mess.

And now for the red bits.

First off we have the frames and motion.

Then comes the buffer planks.

I left the loco in the sun for most of the day. Mainly as the red was drying slowly, not sure whether it was because I used loads of thinners or if it was just the tin I used.

On with the lining now probably start that on Monday to give it all more time to cure.

If ever I want to loose my self and wallow in the glory of some fine modeling I come to your thread Pete. I must admit I was late coming to it as being 7mm in my ignorance I thought there be nothing there for me and with so much on this site its finding time to look at every thing.

But how wrong I was this is wonderful work and I've picked up so many tips and ideas which transcend scales from both this and your "Scratch build how I do it" thread. keep it coming regards Steve

It is surprising where you get tips and inspiration I am following a couple of 2mm or N gauge scratch builds, some of their work I wish I could do in 7mm.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just as well we are doing it for fun or we might feel under pressure.

Looking forward to seeing some more of your conversion Jon.

May be picking your brains soon on ground discs, it seems Bodmin was blessed with loads of them.

Started the lining and other detail painting today. I must admit it looks better in the flesh than in the photos. I have now decided I will redo a couple of bits. But that's tomorrows job, along with the boiler bands. So far I am pleased with the work, not as good as a professional job.

I was having trouble deciding what green to use, as it is only ever described as dark green. and in one source says they lightened it to an emerald green. In the end I decided that the most logical colour was to use dark olive. Knowing how the Southern liked to save money, it is something they have in the paint shop without having another colour around.

Well here's the work so far. Hopefully more tomorrow.

Thanks guys for kind comments.

Managed a little more on this today. It is strange why it takes so long to put back together when it all fits. I am now ready to add the wheels gears and motor. I am looking forward to see if it still runs. The crank axle seem quite loose so fingers crossed.

I also added the boiler bands and lined the steps. I will add the transfers and it can be given a coat of varnish. I must also varnish the steps etc before I get to far.

I have decided I quite like this dark green lining, it's hard to see how poor my lining out is.

Getting there. The transfers were added today, along with the the frames being varnished. It seems to be going together well, even if it is taking time, mainly due to me not being able to spend time at the bench.

It is interesting to see how much of the hard work actually shows. I am sure the crossheads will be seen moving, not so sure about the motion.

Really struggled to get motivated today. As you will see the body was varnished over the weekend. I also managed to get the loco standing on it's own feet. I have been running for best part of 4 hours today, There is a slight tight spot more so going in reverse than forward. I have as yet not cured it but I have eased it. With so many moving parts it is tricky tracking it down.

I also made the strap to hold the motor in place. There is only about 0.5mm of clearance so it's length was important. I have had to add a little more clearance by cutting a little more from the cab front and ash pan. Why did it all fit before the paint was added?

The glazing was fitted. I needed to remake this as as a fool I had made it to the size of the opening before I made the bezel. I used PVA to glue them in place which I hope will be enough as they were a good fit in the rebate. The buffer heads, springs etc were fitted. Again the holes needed adjusting, and now the heads are sliding smoothly again.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get the pickups made and get the loco to run as it should rather than on fly leads.

I also had a root through the cupboard for a crew. Not sure which pair to paint at the moment. The two just standing waiting for something to happen, or the odd couple?

I need to do quite a bit of tidying up which ever pair get the job, they are not the tidiest of castings.
