Hmm, remember Ernie the guard ex Newton Abbot driver he had a bit of a hunched back. Back in the day he drove most of the top link turns, Kings, Castles etc, as well as worked the Kingsbridge branch

Indeed, dear old Ernie Carter, top driver in his day. A real character, he used to 'fall asleep' (just resting his eyes!) at the regulator on the way to Kingswear according to Colin H his fireman!

Amazingly he attracted the ladies but was 'called to God' enjoying himself at the Bridgwater carnival!

Just returned to this thread (that I started) and am excited to see it's still going after all this time! Keep turning up those gems. Every picture has value. Only recently someone showed me a colour shot of a Class 123 at Kingswear ( Swindon Inter City dmu). They only worked through one summer I believe. There is somewhere out there a D600 Warship on the branch I'm sure. Nice to see recent activity after some fallow periods on this thread. I have more to bring but it may be a trickle! Happy New Year to all.

Splendid pictures John. Memories of the time before all the track additions after the TSR took over.

Starting to scan some of my old BW negatives - from mid-1980s - I'll update the details later when I've found my notes.

Maybe summer 77 ?

After abolition of headcodes in 76,  (and that year a lot of 50s were displaying their running number in truncated form in their headcode boxes ie 5044 )- here domino headcodes replacing the redundant roller blinds and before naming in 78.

Fingers crossed there'll be a Western along in a minute if its summer 77. Possibly a 25 on the Paignton local too.  Sure to be a 46 or 47 on a NE to SW too.

Happy days. Very happy days.

Paignton of my childhood... Delles Cafe and the Regent Cinema, (not that I went in them but they where always there,) until they destroyed Delles Cafe and the run of shops there... remember May's Bakery almost underneath the footbridge, and Woolies beside the signal box... the old footbridge... you could look right into the box off the footbridge...

The queue of traffic backing up into Hyde Road past Waycotts corner, my old Doctors above their untill it burnt down and they moved to Bishops Place...

Sounds just like my holidays in the 60s/70s.

As soon has the bells rang out, for the crossing gates, i would run out of the

woolies to see the Warships & Westerns.
