Bachmann 2018/19 RELEASES

Bachmann Europe has announced its 2018/19 programme and released its new catalogues covering the Bachmann Branchline (OO and OO9 Scales) and Graham Farish (N Scale) ranges at a Trade Event held near Birmingham today.

Class 251 Western Pullman (REVISED TOOLING TO CAB FRONT)

30-420.jpg

Metropolitan Cammell (Birmingham) built 2 x six-car Pullman Diesel Multiple Units (TOPS code Class 251) between 1959 and 1960. The two six-car units worked between London St. Pancras and Manchester on the Blue Pullman service. Following electrification of the West Coast Main Line, Pullman services between London and Manchester transferred to the new electric railway for which new coaches were built. The two units were transferred to the Western Region in 1966 where they worked alongside 3 x eight-car units. The former Midland Region units were fitted with cables on the cab front to enable the two units to be coupled together and they received a revised BR livery adopted for Pullman services of grey and blue (reversed corporate livery). All Class 251 units were withdrawn in May 1973.

Railway Operating Division 2-8-0
521 locomotives were ordered in 1917 by the Railway Operating Division during World War 1 and the design was a variation on the Great Central Railway’s Robinson 8K 2-8-0 (later LNER Class O4). 311 of them saw service in France and following the cessation of hostilities the locomotives returned to the UK. They found use with several railway companies including the SE&CR, Caledonian, GWR and L&NWR amongst others.

Rosyth Dockyard converted them in 1992 and 1993 to a new specification for the Network SouthEast sector of British Rail. These units were to replace locomotive hauled trains on the London Waterloo – Salisbury – Exeter route. All saw service post privatisation with South West Trains and more recently with South Western Railway (since 20th August 2017).

Coaches
Bulleid coaches

The Southern Railway and then the Southern Region of British Railways normally ran their coaches in fixed formation sets. Our coaches are numbered correctly to reproduce 3 of these sets at different points during their working lives (except 34-775 which is a ‘loose’ coach). We are producing coaches that have both the early shallow window vents and the later deep window vents along with both variants of underframe equipment. The Late BR green coaches of Set 69 will also feature the additional strengthening rib along the bodyside which was a common feature of this design of coach later in their lives.

Wagons
Parrot Wagon

250 wagons were constructed in 1917 to the standard LNWR 40 ton ‘Parrot’ bogie trolley design for the War Department – for use at home and by the French Railways during the First World War. After the war 25 of these were passed over to the LNWR to join the original ‘Parrot’ wagons and a further 140 were sold to the Midland Railway, plus some to the Caledonian Railway. The remainder of the wagons were either left in France or retained for use by the British Military. At the time of the grouping in 1923 all of the wagons in railway company ownership became part of the LMS fleet. By the Second World War the original 40t ‘Parrot’ wagons were requisitioned by the War department for further military use.

New Tooling – Bachmann Narrow Gauge (OO9 Scale)
Steam Locomotives
Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0STs
The Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds produced 21 of these light weight locomotives between 1886 and 1904 for use in the slate quarries of North Wales. Many locomotives remained in use at the quarries until their closure in the late 1960s. All 21 locomotives have been preserved and are now in use on heritage lines or in museums across the country. Locomotives from the same ‘family’ were used in a number of other industries the length of the country.

Coaches
Ashover Coach
The Ashover Light Railway ordered four coaches of this design from the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company in 1924 for the operation of passenger services on its line in Derbyshire. They were built on recycled bogies from First World War wagons. They operated at Ashover until passenger services ceased in 1936. Two coaches later found further use with the Lincolnshire Coast Light railway then based in Cleethorpes. These coaches can still be seen today operating at the LCLR line which is now located in Skegness. A third coach that also survived is located at the Golden Valley Light Railway in Derbyshire.

I'm genuinely curious why there's another GCR-liveried Director on the list.  "Mons" has literally just come out (December 2017), I'd imagine anyone who wants a GC-liveried Director either has one of those, or Butler Henderson.  I would have thought the J11 would have been a more likely candidate for pre-grouping colours; Bachmann even did a limited edition run of it a few years back.

I wonder what those 'Parrot' wagons are? The ones I know of were built during WW2 to transport aircraft components, and subsequently found use as cable-drum carriers. I can't think how you would load them with a tank; at least not if you wanted to get it out again.

I was wondering about that, I thought they mainly used strengthened Macow wagons and Poll wagons to move tanks around. It seems a bit weird as the Parrot drops down in the middle which surely couldn't accommodate a tank

Edit - After a bit of googling I just found online that Parrot was the WW1 telegraph code for Warflat so we may be thinking of the wrong thing

Holy crap! 009 RTR Quarry Hunslets! I never thought I'd ever read that in my lifetime. My only worry is those little statements as built but also as preserved - the current locomotives are markedly different in detail from their as built selves. Even so I await them with massive excitement - now where's the pics?

We seem to have two Southern class 170’s in the range, one old tooling, one new ?

32-468 Class 171/7 2-car DMU 171727 in Southern livery is awaiting release for a year or so....

And a new tooling

35-580 Class 171 DMU 171122 in Southern Railway

Switchable day and night modes.

Illuminated destination blinds.

Functional BSI couplings on outer ends.

Conductive coupling meaning only one decoder is required for DCC operation.

Easy access DCC decoder fitting.

will an old tooling stand up against a new one ?

Must be a first to see a new tooling replace an old tooling, before the old tooling has been released, is one a kind of “railroad vs new superdetailed” perhaps ?

I wouldn’t mind both, as they run in 4 cars, but they need to sit well next to each other.

From past experience, if it's pointed out to Bachmann that they have got something wrong they will gladly change it.  If you email them with the information that you have then they'll be very grateful I'm sure

This is a relatively thin list with new versions and new tooling but nothing completely new in either OO or N. There seem too be quite a few re-announcements — the J72 and V2 for example. The presentation makes it difficult to see what are the significant new items. In N, I think it is the new tooling for the class 158 DMU—needed for some time.

The only models which aren't new versions or new tooling for existing models in the range are in 009. Does this mean that Bachmann feel there are no completely new subjects worth tackling in standard gauge?

Although I model standard gauge, the real stand-out items are the Quarry Hunslets and the Ashover bogie carriages.

I've seen a few of the Quarry Hunslets in preservation and I'll bet they'll sell well.

In future, I foresee quite a few model Welsh quarry layouts and Ashover Light Railway set-ups described on this forum.

The other big surprise is the introduction of shallow-vent Bulleids - I was expecting the Farish versions which have deeper sliding vents to be reproduced for the larger scale.

At least Bachmann's made the right choice because they've appeared in malachite!

New Tooling 35-625 Class 170/1 3-Car DMU No. 170104 in Cross Country livery                                                          Yes

New Tooling 35-580 Class 171 2-Car DMU No. 171722 in Southern livery                                                                      YEs
New Tooling 31-520 Class 159 3-Car DMU No. 159013 in BR Network SouthEast livery                                                YESSSSS!

32-764A Class 57/3 No. 57312 'Solway Princess' Northern Belle                                                                                     Go on
32-755A Class 57/3 No. 57314 Arriva Trains Wales                                                                                                          Huh?
31-519 Class 158 2 Car DMU No. 158766 GWR                                                                                                              Oh Yeah!

Excellent announcement, the modern modeller is rewarded in 2018 for their continued patience. Funny enough, I jokingly charmed Bachmann at Warley about a class 159 where I got a wink back, and I did say to them, what would be brilliant, would be to reward us for our patient wait for the re-tooled 158, by giving us an example in GWR livery! Most wonderful!

The Arriva Trains 57/3 is an odd choice? Why not DRS green fade instead?

Interesting the N gaugers get a TPE class 350, but we don't?

Quite a small range, means most could be delivered this year? Also, was it not mentioned on here, Bachmann have new tooling but shall not show it/announce it until they have an EP. Would this suggest the Electrostar is forthcoming later this year. Or are Hornby announcing tomorrow?

Well we don't yet know what they are planning exactly so can't really say what is/isn't right however there are some differences that are important to note:

Alice, Britomart & Dorothea all share the same frames. Nesta has very different ones which are unique to the Penrhyn locos.

Britomart & Dorothea have different cabs, neither extends forward of the back of the saddle tank, but they are never the less different. Nesta & Alice's cab side sheets do extend past the back of the saddle tank and are attached to it's side with a bracket along the top.

Alice should have the standard Dinorwic steam turret and injectors on the backhead, Nesta should have the penrhyn Steam turret with salter safety valves  on the backhead, injectors on the tank sides.

Chimneys should be short on Nesta & Alice (Unless Alice as preserved in which case long) the cabbed ones should be long.

All this is without going into tank and smokebox rivetting patterns, nameplate positions and buffer lengths, which could all vary wildly!

Liveries could also be fun - what is Dinorwic Red livery? well it isn't set in stone that's for sure, and Britomart never was blue at Pen yr Orsedd.

But yes, very excited to have some in RTR form, going to be buying several!
