Rob did you notice the number on the end of the first tanker in http://warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/gwrqhy1995.htm ? It might explain why it's a devil of a job to get your tanker rake in the "correct" running order.

Looking at your marvellous pictures I found myself admiring the red Devon cliffs, Can I ask what was used to create them please?

Hi Dave.Nothing special and unfortunately I don't have any photos under construction.A similar technique was used for my station grass bank where I used polystyrene blocks covered in mod roc after shaping.Very messy.Cover your trackwork with newspaper first.
An undercoat is applied although if using scenic mats it's not needed.The front edge has a layer of polyfilla spead over it followed by Green Scene Devon Soil painted on top of a red undercoat,B & Q matchpot emulsions are good for this.Various scenic materials are used for the greenery including WS foliage matting ripped apart.

I might be interested in the Fina's were they on the scene 1939 with that livery ?
Not according to the website quoted by Mikkel in post 1511.A British retail brand from 1953 as I read it.I would use them myself otherwise.
'This is the British arm of the Belgian company Petrofina, they started trading in the UK in the later 1940s but only established a British retail brand in 1953 when the bought out Cities Service Oil Company Ltd. (an existing distributor of petroleum products) and several small distribution chains. Fina ware themselves bought out by Total in 1999.
Fina were buying and using railway tank wagons in their livery by the later 1950s (some of which were second hand stock). They have operated rail tankers, both Class A and B, in their livery. In the early years the Class A tanks were silver or very light grey with the word FINA about 30 inches (75cm) high on the upper side in red outlined in black. Under this was 'motor spirit' in black. The Class B tanks used the company logo, usually to the left and with 'fuel oil' in lettering about a foot high on the right.'

A few photos of the oil tanks in close up.Where I had two of the same vehicle I made an attempt at renumbering by doing just one number.In hindsight a better job may result in doing the complete number as the font style may not be quite the same.Another job I may do is to fit screw-links as this train is likely to be a fixed rake.However,Smiths are quite pricey so won't be done all in one go.

I might have a couple of 'Fina' wagons available too soon.

Well he's sold over 400 items in a month and had no negative feedback although going back he has had some.

Taken a couple of quick shots with my remarshalled oil train under J headlamps on 66xx class 6676.Yes I do know they were never seen in South Devon but due to loco shortages I've pressed it into action.If these are ok I'll do some more properly tomorrow.
Incidently,I've added a barrier wagon at either end but someone on here who's knowledge is second to none is not convinced I need them and that 60's colour photo I mentioned earlier with the 72xx has none either.I think it looks ok.

Hi Rob those photo's of your tankers has got me thinking I need some more but I not sure what would be correct for Devon have you done any research on the subject ?
The only research I've done is to read through that webpage on Mikkel's link above.It says that Fina wagons are a no-no till much later than my post war period but the Esso liveries are ok along with the Mobil.I need to find a photo of an oil train in Devon ideally.It's a cracking looking train in model form if I get it correct but whether it's prototypical in the South Hams is open to debate.I could always revert to rule 1 though.Who would have thought a few photos would create such an interest.
The Pratts Spirit would have become Esso but will stay as I adore it's livery.

There's a mention of a Fawley to Bromford Bridge oil train in the mid 60s unusually at that time hauled by a Grange instead of BRCW Type 3.

If Esso had no refineries in GWR territory, what would be an example of an Esso liveried oil train on GWR lines?

If "Pratts Spirit" became "Esso" in 1935, is Rob alright to be running the "Pratts" branded tanker in 1947? Would WW2 have delayed the rebranding exercise.?
I don't care if it's wrong,it's my favourite and stays no matter what.Kingsbridge had a depot for 'Pratts' at one time.Perhaps.
Here it is parked by the goods shed awaiting to be taken down the branch.

Loads; the ones in the small pots (such as the Raspberry) are quite fine, the other pots have larger flakes - I think they're about £3 a pot but it'll go a long way.

1. 'Empty' tank wagons are dangerous because they have not been purged and thus still contain volatile gases - which are often more easily flammable than the actual petroleum product.
2. Single star tank wagons are those marked with only one star - like the Mobil ones in Rob's train (actually all the wagons in the train look to be single star nut the star isn't readily visible on some of them).
3. Class A tank cars were painted silver from 1939 onwards (any wartime dalliances apart(, prior to that they had been buff coloured; they are used to product with a lower flashpoint, e.g. petrol.
Right I've had a closer look at what I'm using so feel free to tell me what I need to chuck out of this train.Hopefully I can keep some.
The Mobil versions are black with a white star.
The OMO version has a white star too.
The Esso and Fina versions are both in sliver with black star although I do have another Fina in black with a white star.
My favourite is the Pratts Spirit which is a buff colour with a black star.

The embankments looked a bit too green/beige so I thought it needed something to break it up a little and chose to have a crack at some Rosebay Willow Herb as something appropriate for urban dereliction rather than rural flora. I've never seen any modelled which really lit my fire(weed) so I thought I'd have a go using some other products.
Woodland Scenics Field Grass (medium green)
Woodland Scenics Blended Turf (green blend)
Green Scene scatter (midsummer green)
Flower Soft Ultra Fine (raspberry fizz) - available from Hobbycraft
Take a pinch of the Field Grass, give it a twist in the centre and dab superglue around the centre. Cut at the centre when dry and trim to suit, spray with hairspray and dip into a mix of the Blended Turf and Green Scene scatter. When dry another blast of hairspray and dip into the pot of Flower Soft. Stab a hole in the scenery, fill with PVA and plant your weed.
I know these 'erbs should be a little more singular and upright but it gives a passable interpretation from normal viewing distances. Only a fraction of the packets of stuff have been used to create the weeds shown and is certainly less than a quid's worth.
Most hedges that I see look like they've fallen out of a box rather than a random mix of aged plants taking over the original hedge planting to make something that's wider than it is tall until it becomes part of the landscape.

Afternoon all and thanks Mike for wrapping my knuckles.I've opened a can of worms .At least you've now guided me in the right direction and I'll make the amendments and retake the photos.Incidently,I found a nice photo in colour of a 72xx on an oil train in the 60s,no barrier wagon,pulling Shell Mex wagons.A filthy black colour.
At least I've learnt something. I should have stuck with James number 5 !

Possibly one of Britains greatest strikers.Right up there with myself. He never played for Newark or owned a caravan.
