  1. Thanks DY444. It is indeed Crewe ... much too light and airy to be New Street.. Cheers Alan
  2. More from 1988 90004 Carlisle. 87034 Carlisle. 87002 Carlisle 90007 Wolverhampton. 86426 Birmingham New St.
  3. From 1988 81019 and 85011 Manchester Piccadilly. 86233 Lancaster. 86415 with 87003 Lancaster. 87035 Coventry. 85038 Carlisle.
  4. Two more from July 1992. 37716 with BQWs near Bradbury. Cheers Alan
  5. Hello Scottish Modeller I've several photos of the Leith pipe train, although the majority are early 90s. IIRC the pipes carried were of two different diameters and the wagons were either BDWs or BDAs. At the time we were interested in the BDWs as these trains must have been among the last vac braked freights on the ECML. 37240 BDWs, Ouston Junction. October 1989 37717 BDAs, diverted near Stillington. March 1993 37716 BDWs, Stillington. March 1993 Hope these are of some use to you. Regards Alan

  7. Taken near Tebay, August 1982. 87030 86254 The original slide says 86320... or is it an 85?
  8. Hi Alan, No I don't but I'll have a look on Ebay and see what's available. Seems that 1979 might be a interesting time to model with all the extra traffic. Julian Hi Julian Although I don't know for certain, I think the majority (if not all) of the diverted ECML services were the slower vac braked and partly fitted freights. They're often difficult to tell apart from the S&C regular freights. Clues can be a large number of 21t coal hoppers or "whisky blues" (grain hoppers) in the consist. Around this time BR also used the line for publicity purposes using an HST. I think there's a photo in one of the Flinders books. Alan
  9. Hi Julian Do you have copies of T G Flinders books On the Settle Carlisle Route and The Settle Carlisle Revisited? They're esential reading for the time you're modelling. I'm no expert on steam specials over the line and most of the following info comes from those books. Steam specials 78-83 were mostly in the hands of popular restored locos. Flying Scotsman, Sir Nigel Gesley, V2 4471 Green Arrow, Evening Star, Clan Line, and of course 46229. Early 80s Black 5 5305, Leander, Lord Nelson, J36 Maud, Black 5 5407+Leander, Sir Lamiel, City of Wells, I also read somewhere that the 1979 steam programme was severly curtailed because the line had to carry extra traffic following the collapse of the Penmanshiel Tunnel on the ECLM. Cheers Alan

    Dapol 08

Let's hope our 08s aren't now caught up in the collapse of Hanjin Shipping.... another twist in the tale of the long running 08 saga??? Alan
  11. Hi Jeff Some of the classic S&C viaducts do span almost dry valleys. There must be times when the streams becomes raging torrents, but I think a trickle of water would be more appropriate. Here's an interesting arrangement below Dent Head with only a small stone bridge over the actual stream. Cheers Alan
  12. Hi Julian Thought I'd better make a quick post to correct a couple of things I mentioned earlier. It was May 1983 when freights finally ended.. (Friday 13th!), not May 82 as I said before. For the last two years there were only two freights each way and they were hauled by anything from the regular list of S&C classes. Along with only two passenger trains each way, that leaves plenty of paths to run an excursion with 46229. There were at least 2 earlier Coronation railtours over the line ... both in 1963 Locos were City of Carlisle (maroon livery) and City of Hereford (BR green). Regards Alan
  13. Hello again... I don't think there'd be any problem running Duchess of Hamilton over the S&C at any time during the 1980s although there would be long periods of time when she'd be out of service for boiler overhauls etc. At least one Coronation worked a railtour in the 1960s - probably c1964. I think it was City of Bradford??? Never seen any photos of a Blue Pullman on the line, but if you're thinking of early 60s then Mikes layout of Dent is a great inspiration. My layout is still very much alive and well and is still run almost every day. As I always repeat the 1979 weekday morning timetable there isn't a lot of variety, so therefore rarely any photos these days. The layout has been used to test locos for the new layout. This a rare shot of EWS 56018 before a quick repaint into BR blue. Modelling the early 1980s I'm happy to watch trains running through the scenery, however if, maybe, you enjoy shunting then it would probably have to be the 1960s with most goods yards still in use. Regards Alan
  14. Hi Jeff While dating and re-naming over 10,000 slides taken between 1980 and 2010, I've been looking out for pictures of S&C fencing. Here are a few examples, non very clear and some may be too modern. All these photos date from the 1990s. This metal bar was my favourite in place of stone walls but it's too small to replicate easily in N. It's quite common along Mallerstang and through Dent cutting towards Rise Hill. Cheers Alan
  15. Hello Julian Your list of locos is good for the early 80s and I think there were occasional Dalesrail specials with DMUs at this time. Most photos show 108s and/or 101s Unfortunately 1983 isn't a good year to model as all freights south of Appleby were withdrawn in May 82 leaving only 2 passenger services each way, usually in the hand of 31/4s, 47s and the occasional 45/1. There were always a few suprises, maybe a 25 or a 45/0 during the summer months and D200 was a regular performer. I think coaching stock was still mostly Mk 1s with a few early Mk2 s in some rakes. If you want variety with blue diesels late 70s up till 1981 would give plenty of variety after that it was the long years of decline until the closure battle was won. Have a look at my S&C 1979-83 layout in this section which is based mostly on the 1979-80 timetable. The books I used for inspiration were T J Flinders, On the Settle -Carlisle Route and The Settle -Carlisle Route Revisited as well as Diesels Over the Settle-Carlisle ( can't remember the author). Regards Alan
  16. You're right... much too nice (and expesive) to be left in the box. I've always fancied a small, end of steam, NE layout ... Q6s, K1, WD with maybe a couple of 37s and a 24. Alan
  17. Almost forgot... Jeff, you're letting the side down.... where's your Hornby Q6 ? "Not an S&C loco" is no excuse...
  18. Hello Jeff ... back again I'll start by saying how sorry I was to hear about Jock. I'm sure he'll have been missed on here. It's good to see steady progress with Kirkby Luneside although I'm sure there's an easier way to produce stone walls. I have looked through my photos for typical fencing but have found nothing. 99.9% of the lineside in the upland areas seems to be stone walls. Where walls have collapsed or fallen into disrepair there are often short sections of fencing to plug the gaps. I noticed you mentioned how much you were enjoying putting the railway into the landscape which is what I also now enjoyed doing. It was for that reason that , without the luxury of a bunker, I ended up sticking with N Gauge. I also hope you've taken Jasons' advice and made time to play trains, either running a couple of throgh services or a bit of shunting in the good yard. After a few hours of intensive modelling I find it can be very therapeutic. There were some interesting comment on Dent about people spending less time on the site, or accessing it in different ways. You must be congratulated for sticking with your blow by blow accounts of Kirkby Luneside. Making my last 00 layout I found it impossible to build a model and provide constant updates. For me personally it only added a lot of unwanted pressure to the modelling I've now been retired for almost 3 months and have been doing more modelling than ever, both railway and non railway, yet have visited the site very rarely. No excuses - apart from time. Having retired I've been constantly asked how I'm going to fill in my time!!! So much modelling to do.... so little time! Regards Alan
  19. Hi Mike I'm back again and catching up. Hope you're recovering well from the eye opp. Thanks for taking the time to post so many superb photos of Dent. I've been ticking lots of "likes" and could have added a lot more. Diffcult to pick favourites - going back a couple of months -75062 on ballast and the 8F on covhops. Also loved the 4MT photographed under the coal road bridge .. and then there are the diesels... Quick question - it was interesting to see the photo of the Class 40 on the anhydrites. Do you have a date for it? It's also interesting to follow your stock building/converting. Good luck with the Anhydrite wagons. I'm sure you'll have mentioned somewhere how many you have to convert... most rakes appear to be about 18 wagons. ....and I've found someone else who's been unable to resist the perfect curves of the Hornby Q6.... Regards Alan
  20. It might not be an S&C loco but at least you'll be able to run yours... I'm a dedicated N Gauge modeller now... but having waited 30 years for a RTR Q6, I just had to have one . It's a beautiful model of a classic north east engine and it's now got me thinking about small layout to run it on.... West Durham / Waskerley???? Cheers Alan
  21. Hi Peter I haven't been on the site very much recently so I've enjoyed catch up with Llanbourne tonight. Loved the videos, they really bring the layout to life. Thanks for taking the time to produce and post them. Regards Alan
  22. Some superb n gauge modelling here. The blending in of the backscene with the rest of the layout is really well done which made it a real suprise to discover that the scenic area is only 6' x 2'. I particularly liked the photos of Peak on a Liverpool-Newcastle. That's how I like to remember the line via Standedge. Regards Alan
  23. Thanks for the info on the cement train. I forgot to check wether it turned left or right at the south end of the King Edward Bridge! Has the working recently been taken over by Colas? Up until a few weeks ago the Seaham Harbour train was usually a Freightliner 66. 60095 at Carlisle on the 17th March. Alan
  24. This morning at Newcastle - 10am 60076 on PCAs. I've lost touch with what the current cement traffic flows are, so no idea what service this is. Cheers Alan
