Very nice work, but just one question, is it better to have the compensation beam soldered to the centre bearing as you have, or to let it just bear on the axle bearing allowing some axial movement of the axle?
Thanks Matthew.
The centre bearings are old worn ones so there is plenty of axial movement. Much more than the half mill up and down required.

Bon dia, tudo bem

Nice to see progress on this. The idea with the cast corners does seem good, although it looks likey could have been a bit more refined.
I had Portuguese lessons once - alas now mostly forgotten. But I imagine you need it for everyday use, which is how to really learn a language, I think.
Thanks Mikkel
I am pleased to be progressing too.
I think it would of been easier learning a second language 30 years ago. I also need to read and write it too. So it is making my brain mushy.

You seemed to of made good progress so far.

Yaaay! A tidy workbench! (I must get one of those myself one of these days.) But how long before "After" goes back to "Before"? ;-)
I am not bothered about the working area getting in a mess. The trouble was the room was beging to be the dumping room.
Also I now get inspected by SWMBO.

I don't think FIFA or the IOC has ever come up against anything quite as, er, laid-back as the Brazilian approach to projects....
Trouble here Ivan you have the guy doing his job on the site, earning a little more than minimum wage $350 USD a month. Then you have the bosses on thier $4000 + USD a month is not enough and take bribes from the suppliers so they can supply, skim the workers wages so they have a job, etc etc. I know I would not put much effort into my work. Then for the workers to cap it all the area get better and you cant afford to live there so you end up have a 2 hour plus bus journey each way after a 12 hour shift. Where we live you would not be able to pay the estate charges on a minimum wage let alone the rent, and it is not even a posh estate. It gets worse as you go into the government. They want to pay themselves 15 monthly wages a year. The presedent wants to hide her overseas expenses . As she says it is nothing to do with the people, it is government business.
Yipee, a Mogul on the way :-)
Imagina na Copa!
Yep Mikkel.
The flux is wending its way to me. The new cupboard is on its way too. The work bench is getting cleared ready for lots to go into the cupboard. Soon be full steam ahead!!!

The only good thing about the world cup is that the roads will be empty everytime Brasil plays. So 90 minutes of piece then the roads will be full of drunks.
It amazes me that in the 1850's it took 9 months to make and build the Crystal Palace, now they can't build a football stadium in 8 years. And the most important part is flat and grows by it's self.

Looks very good. Are you sure you will get all those wires inside?

Hi Mikkel
These things are just sent to keep you on your toes. I have decided, I am building a LSWR brake van, I will post the start of the build later on today here I have start a thread for my own work. Keeping the blog just for things that are for sale or commisions.
Hi Pete, sorry to hear about your problems with the flux, always very frustrating when something like that stops a project. I wouldn't mind seeing some scratchbuilt plastic work from you though, any thoughts what it would be?

Try 'Hydroponic pH Down' - available from garden centres or Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Advanced-Nutrition-Down-Technology-Hydroponics/dp/B00G3CGQ2A/
It's 81% phosphoric acid so, by the time you've diluted it down, it will last for years
Mike
I agree with Mike, I've used 'Hydroponic pH Down' for a couple of years now, for me it works very well.
Snitzl
Not so easy for them to post here. But I will look in what they call garden shops here.
-
You might also try the local garage - see if they use a liquid called 'Jenolite'. Whilst it is used as a rust inhibitor/surfacce prep prior to spraying, it does contain phosphoric acid - a major ingredient in flux!
I know and have used jenolite, but here they would not use it. I would want something without to many addatives. Once I have found a source of acid it will be fine. You have to get a completely different mind set to where things are sold compared with the uk

Some plumbers fluxes are suitable and security at the DIY store is probably less than at the Coco Cola factory!
Good idea, but they tend to use plastic pipe, I have never seen a coppertube in the merchants here, so no idea where you would get it.
DIY is not done here. As a general rule.

All Components do miniature plug and socket sets which are as cheap as chips:

Thanks for that. Save me a lot of trouble. Searching from hear you have to get through the American and Brasilian sights first.

Hi Pete,
You mention using a 2 pin plug to connect the tender to the loco. Do you make one of these, or is such a thing available to buy? I'm contemplating doing something similar for my Dean Goods, so would appreciate your thoughts!
It is an item I acquired, I will post a photo tomorrow. I know OzzyO found a place to get them a little while ago so may be worth a PM to him.

I am very open to seeing more of this. By the way where is it? looks well worth a visit.
-
Looks great. How long is your layout? I had trouble fitting B6's in my plan.
-
Aw, I was going to guess a 43xx too. Good to see another project, Pete. The GWR moguls are among my favourite locos so this build will be extra good to follow.
For a 4mm modeller it sounds amazing that a set of 7mm wheels can be worth so much. Maybe I should invest my savings!
It is only the AJH ones that are very expensive. But I have to admit I got the kit for under
-
A 43xx?
Give the man a biscuit. Close enough. the kit wont actually make a 43XX it does the last of the 5390-99, all the 63xx and 7300-19.

I am always unsure of the colour of the ends. I read somewhere that SR venetian red was in fact red oxide. The Precision colour seems to be more this sort of shade. But I have seen many models painted an almost signal red. I think the colour in the HMRS livery book is also quite dull. I can see painting the ends brighter would be better for being seen. I have been confused about the actual shade for years, and all the written information is quite confusing.
Any way excellent model. Hopefully some year soon mine will be completed.

Can you not get the pickups to rub on the treads rather than the back?
-
Like them a Lot.
Terry
Very nice job.
Thanks guys. I think it was well worth the diversion.
-
Beautifully done!
Thanks. It is one that I had for years and put off not wanting to form the bonnet. But after the West Country I built, what was I worrying about.

I thought the salmon was the right colour. My thoughts were that the yellows of the butter and lemons was wrong which reflected badly on the salmon.

Great little milling machine I want I want!!!!!!!!
Rain we often have a 100mm in an afternoon.

Very nice Mikkel.
You got the brakes correct. It looks like the instructions are wrong. Morton brakes always has the reversing cam on the side with the brakes.
You will get the LSWR bug soon, with their colourful green loco liveries, and bright carriages.
