  1. That's true. There is a bit of alchemy going on out there. My printer (Peopoly Moai) uses a laser, and Mike's (Anycubic Photon) uses an LCD panel, and the printing process takes place at different temperatures. So you need to make sure that the resins you use are compatible with your printer. However, this is not difficult to work out, and there are plenty of people out there and on here that can help you - as nje200 says, especially for the Photon.
  2. Hi Les. That’s a difficult one. As far as I know, high detail and tough non-brittle plastic are fairly mutually exclusive. Can you give a bit more background about your budget, what you’ll be printing, what sort of size the parts will be, and what you’re going to be doing with them?
  3. Bagger - I forgot to turn off auto-subscribe and renewed my Pocketmags subscription via Apple. I'm ready for next year though.
  4. No problem Chris, I didn't want you to experience the sinking feeling I've had in the past having made yet more confetti
  5. Hi Chris, a quick one about your spring assemblies. As they're drawn, it looks like all the different parts of the assembly will be cut separately. If you want to cut each part as a whole part, you'll have to remove some of the lines. Also, it's difficult to see in the picture, but be careful the ends aren't cut off, there doesn't seem to be much keeping them attached to the main spring. If it was me, I'd cut one and see how I get on. I've attached a drawing below to show you what I mean. cheers Jason
  6. That looks Fantastic Mark. If it helps any, I'm currently laser burning the waiting room at Havenhouse, Lincs. It too is English bond with stretcher layers, and I've noticed on the prototype there is a header in the middle of each stretcher row.
  7. Hi Chris. The only thing I found with the Barnum bogies was that they had a fair bit of flex in them. Although, they were pretty long at 10’6”.
  8. There's a 3D printed model of it in two parts on Shapeways https://www.shapeways.com/product/E2Q78WRJX/sjs-odin-klassen-part-1-2-1-87
  9. Hi Chris, it's something Mike T and I talked about. I don't remember what I wrote, but in the end, it wasn't so much that they helped line everything up as the bearings acting as pegs did that. But it did make things easier/faster, as you are doing both sides of the bogie at the same time.
  10. Hi there, I can’t give you very much on what to look for, but a lot of people have gone the Darkly Labs route. It’s worth looking on there. Their latest version comes as a kit and you can get a number of different options with it. I have the first version, and it does the job for me. I suppose some things to think about are 1) your budget 2) what you want to cut through 3) what extras you are looking for - examples being air assist, full cabinet, camera, bundles software, etc La
  11. The LNER did a 1938 special behind No.1. There were seven 6-wheel coaches in ECJS livery - full brake, 3rd, 1st/3rd comp, 1st, 1st, 1st/3rd comp, full brake. I also have some photos of 6 wheelers (1st, 2nd and 3rd) in LNER livery. No dates on them though, I'm afraid. That was quite the slog, but I'm caught up now.
  12. If they don't, and the rooves are separate, I can imagine someone with 3D printing experience putting together aftermarket clerestory rooves (or roofs, depending on your persuasion). As they are modular, it will be interesting to see how these are assembled when they come out.
  13. You could do what I have done in the past and search Youtube, Vimeo and Dailymotion in a few days or weeks, the previous series was copied to those websites - quality varies though.
  14. I know what you mean about the absorbency of card, I've had that too, and I agree with Jim, if you get the end beading glued down then it won't move/break. Over here (Canada) you can get Shellac in a spray can, is that an option?
  15. You’re right. I’ve no idea how he goes about his brickwork.
  16. Hi mike, a quick one, have you seen this thread? A bit off topic, but someone has been using similar technology to yours to create buildings
  17. Hey there. I briefly surface on here from time to time to promise stuff, and then other things take over again. Havenhouse hasn't changed in the last year as I've been getting my business to the point where I can take a wage, and I've been working on the wasteland around the house were burnt tyres in heaps, broken glass all over, and the back seat of some car or other in bushes, to something resembling a garden. The garden near the house is done, and the rubbish has gone, and my wife has practically commanded me into the shed to make a proper start - which is never a bad thing. I have been doing *some* modelling, mainly on the computer, and other people have been turning the pixels into 3D models. GNR E2 - long slot and semi-circle options, printed by Mike and currently being sorted out by Dave (Chris P Bacon) on the Sandy thread GNR Railcar - started a long time ago, and again finished by Dave ... and the NER railcar, finished by MickLNER on his thread - warning contains video of it running and looking (dare I say?) cute. I'll not promise anything, but I have a load of flexitrack, and hopefully there will be updates soon.
  18. Hi Marc, I did put the 4mm GNR one on Shapeways in case anyone else was interested. I’m away for a few weeks, but can get in touch with you when I get back. - I hope the thread owner is ok with this post as it could be seen as an advert, if not, happy to remove it.
  19. If the container is fully enclosed, have you thought about adding supports inside the model to stop the bowing? I know when I’ve printed a boiler in the past it’s included internal supports that I’ve knocked out with a chopstick. i hear you on the support cutting.
  20. A conversation has been rekindled outside of RMWeb about the petrol railcar that was received by the LB&SCR from the GNR and drawn by me for the Digest. I remember there were problems with the legibility of the original file. Also, after the Digest was published we found a new photo that changed our idea of the roof profile. Attached below is an updated copy of the drawing. A couple of notes: The inside of the vehicle seems to be taken up with railings and the platform that can be extended and lowered above the roof. I've included everything that I can see in the photos, but nothing that is indistinct. This means that I haven't included the roof equipment. Printable PDF of the same drawing in 4mm scale: LBSCR 1 14.pdf Finally, a render of the 3D model of the basic railcar in GNR days
  21. That does sound worth a try. I know in the forums for my cutter, some people use aluminium honeycomb as a base for this very reason - I've linked to an example. https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Honeycomb-Grid-Core-Cell/dp/B00WF7DHJC
  22. It's always good to learn something new and keep the cells buzzing. Now that you've finished your model, what do you think of 3D printing? Is it for you?
  23. You're not wrong there. I think your coach looks excellent. On the ends, are the lines noticeable in real life? If they are, can you just file them back slightly?
  24. True that. I’ve put some stuff up both on Thingiverse and Shapeways in the past. Thingiverse for people that have access to a printer, and Shapeways for those that don’t. I put a bit of margin on the Shapeways one that basically pays for a coffee. i also use Blender. it’s great for what I need, and is perfect for my budget.
