  4. Hi again everyone, First of all, thank you for all the help, ideas, and supportive approach with this. Although I have played with DCC before, I had never taken programming beyond address and direction change. Tonight I had to 'bite the bullet' and start playing with CV settings. The bad news was that some of the setting suggested here made no difference. I then reset the chip - again, no difference. Now, the good news; I found the following thread: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/45821-Bachmann-36-553-decoder/ There was a post on there about back emf and the relevant CVs; this 'rang a bell' in respect of something I had seen elsewhere (but now cannot find). I changed these as follows, based on suggestions from Bachmann about the Std cl4 2-6-0 - CV 54 to value 12, and CV 55 to value 63. What a difference! Crawls gently and smoothly; there is no erratic speed change, noise, and it performs equally well in both directions. 82021 is now back in its box however I did forget to deal with the analogue running. Ah well! Thanks and regards, Alex
  5. I can't go for that (no can do) - Hall & Oates
  6. Hi again, Thanks for that. I sense the approach of some online magazine shopping this evening ....... Regards, Alex.
  7. Hi, This isn't the kind of layout that I would usually like simply because it's so simple. That said, I cannot help but like this. It oozes atmosphere, and has a sense of reality to it. Looking forward to seeing this develop. Regards, Alex.
  8. I thought the question was' "to be, or not to be"? Or is that just illogical? (Just remembered what the real question was: the answer, though, is 42.)
  9. Hi again, Thanks for the responses. Butler Henderson - were these depots that changed regions as they were reorganised (something I've read of in respect of WR/SR)? bike2steam - d'oh! Why didn't I think of that? I've used BRDatabase on quite a few occasions, but a search like that never occurred to me! Again, thanks for the input. Regards, Alex.
  10. Hi again, Since this morning's post I've had a chat with the manager of one of our local charity shops; he tells me that they manage to get a fair price on railway books, and usually manage to sell them. If they have sufficient, he will create a window display devoted to them. From my experience with that shop, the prices are very competitive compared with 'Amazon', ABE, etc. Regards, Alex.
  11. Hi everyone, Following on from a question in the 'books' sub-forum, I thought I would also post here with a more specific question: Where and when did Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2Ts work in the north east of England? A number of magazine articles and other printed comments state that some of the class did this, however I cannot find any detailed references as to when or where? Anyone have any answers that they would like to share? There is a reason for the question; that will become apparent in the layouts sub-forum in a few weeks. Thanks in advance for any help offered. Regards, Alex.
  12. Hi everyone, First - I should declare that both my wife and I are 'employed' by registered charities, and therefore have an interest in this discussion. Second - I think that the comments from both 'The Snapper', and 'Andy' (post 53, etc) have some merit to them. That said, limiting salaries can have a detrimental effect in a variety of ways. If salaries are extremely high then I can see how that may attract the kind of experience, education, and skills that running the operation requires, while at the same time detracting potential supporters. I also know of charities that struggle to recruit as they pay the minimum wage, making it difficult to find staff who can afford to live within a reasonable commuting distance of their base of operations (important if working unsociable hours or if commuting is difficult). Third - I think much of the Third Sector experiences a waste of financial resources through unnecessary duplication. For example, a few years ago a well-known charity set up a base here in Edinburgh, immediately duplicating the work done by a number of existing organisations with whom they were now competing for 'custom'. I hope that makes some kind of sense. Regards, Alex.
  13. I am what I am - Gloria Gaynor
  14. Who do you think you are - The Spice Girls
  15. Dear Dr Gerbil-Fritters, Much as I am sympathetic to your feelings towards Ms. Grogan, I regret to suggest that the footage may not be as recent as you may think. Having seen her interviewed in the last few months, I would suggest that she now looks more like an attractive woman in her middle fifties rather than as seen in the film. Still stunning though! Sympathetically yours, Alex.
  16. Hi again, No idea what the current value is but I'll try your suggested setting and let you know how I get on. Thanks, Alex.
  17. Hi again everyone, The good news is that the Bachmann chip fits; the tricky bit is getting the wiring loom as far into the smokebox/boiler as possible. The bad news is that the running is poor, as it takes off at 'high' speed and is a bit noisey too; it was fine on analogue. Curiously it does not run on analogue either. I realise that I'll need to change a cv setting to sort the latter out, but does anyone have any advice on settings and values to deal with the former? Again, thanks in advance for any help or advice. Regards, Alex.
  18. Post removed as in wrong thread - now copied to the correct one!
  19. Hi again, Thanks for that Leander. It's one of the books that's on my list of "wants" as it covers the other LMS designs too. The MRI article sounds as if it may have the same, or more, information. As for being a neglected class, I agree. Thanks again. Regards, Alex.
  20. Hi everyone, Just been reading an interesting article on Ivatt's 2MT 2-6-2 tanks in an old copy of MRI (vol. 1; no. 3; Jan-Feb 1994). Like many such articles it only really scratches the surface of the subject. Although I am sure that I have seen a book on Ivatt's LMS 2-6-0s, does anyone know of a book on this class? Thanks and regards, Alex.
  21. Hi again, I'm told that, in Glasgow's smog of the 50s and 60s, these sort of things were known as "silent death". Regards, Alex.
  22. Hi, Could the following also count as first generation successes? Class 08 - eventually redundant in many places due to changing practices Class 37 - although many refurbished as per the 20s Class 47 - ditto (including the 57s) Regards, Alex.
