  1. Hi, Brilliant image. Run that on a layout, and see what the response is ....... Regards, Alex.
  2. Hi, Can you remember the scale/gauge/era etc? Regards, Alex.
  3. Hi Jim, Upstanding - some of them needed to sit down after it was explained to them! Alex.
  4. Hi again, Thanks for the response and the links. The one I immediately recognised was the Stonebow - hadn't seen an image of it from before the 'modernisation'. Nice to see some of the older architecture remains, even in its original use. Regards, Alex.
  5. Hi, I tend to agree with the thought of the OP. That said, living in Edinburgh, I know a few charity bookshop managers (Oxfam and Barnardos), and they have become a lot more savvy in recent years. The 'good' railway books tend to be a bit cheaper than the usual second-hand dealers however they continue to receive a great deal of the usual suspects. Regards, Alex.
  6. Hi again, Thanks for all the responses. I had no idea that the traffic had stopped so long ago. The trains are in a cutting so you tended to hear rather than see them. I've heard trains within the last couple of years so I imagine they were simply removing the containers form the pile. Again, thanks. Regards, Alex.
  7. Hi folks, A true story following on from PhilJW's post yesterday: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/741-the-forum-jokes-thread/?p=3261770 A few years ago I was at a two day conference in my former home town of Cumbernauld (renowned for its monochrome colour palette). We were each asked to introduce ourselves, i.e. the usual stuff - name, role, location, and something funny about ourselves. As we went round the room some attendees began to say increasingly daft things about themselves. When it came to me, I commented that I had just, that morning, been shocked to discover that 'Fifty Shades of Gray' was not about the colour palette of Cumbernauld! One, young, female attendee laughed - the remainder were silent. I simply thought that it could not have been that funny. Later that day a number of my colleagues told me that they had never heard of the book, and asked what was it. Can you imagine having to explain 'mummy porn' to a bunch of middle-aged male clerics? Bizarre but true. Regards, Alex.

  9. Hi everyone, A couple of months ago our local refuse compacting plant at Powderhall closed down. Around the same time the rail traffic between there and the landfill site at Dunbar ended. Does anyone know when (i.e. date)? What about the containers; have they transferred to other traffic flows? (As an aside - does the world hate Dunbar? Next door are Edinburgh's landfill site, Oxwellmains cement works, and Torness nuclear power station!) Thanks for any information. Regards, Alex.
  10. Hi folks, Went to the show for a while today. Before I comment on the show folk should be aware that the Lammas Market has started so parking may not be as easy as thought. A couple of streets are closed, while there are some other traffic restrictions. I have mixed views on the show. Exhibits: Three really good layouts: Ketton Cement; Glenfinnan; and New Westminster. All exhibited fine modelling, simplicity, and entertainment value. The operators on these layouts also spoke with my wife and I. Other layouts were marred by non-communicative exhibitors, and non-moving trains. Traders: With the exception of two they were much as you may expect form a small regional show. The exceptions were the folk doing DCC sound who were extremely helpful, and one group who fought amongst themselves over prices! (Disclaimer: I have no connection with any of the above exhibitors, traders, groups, or individuals other than as a spectator or potential customer.) Hoping that this is of interest/use. Regards, Alex.
  11. Hi Neil, Like many others I'm looking forward to seeing this develop. Have you the basis of a track plan that you could share with us? Thanks. Regards, Alex.
  12. Hi Simon, Finally picked up the Modeller today. Article is fantastic. My better half was very impressed by the modelling and the 'humour' involved too, despite being neither a rail enthusiast nor a Tolkien fan. Are there any potential exhibition appearances in Scotland? Thanks and regards, Alex.

  15. Hi folks, Seems to not have arrived in some parts of the Central Belt! Both of the large WHSmith in Glasgow city centre, and one of the Edinburgh ones didn't have it; hope to try one of the other larger branches on Thursday. Was asked if I was sure that they stocked it - believed me only when I showed them parts 1 and 2 on the shelf! Regards, Alex.
  16. Hi again, Thanks for that number; I'll see if I can find any images online. Regards, Alex.

  19. Hi everyone, Back in 2007 my better half and I enjoyed a day on the Strathspey Railway, where we were steam hauled by a 'Jinty'; she was painted up as 'Thomas the Tank Engine'. Does anyone know what her real identity was? I did have photos but they were lost some time ago. The above also got me thinking! The repaint was thorough so I imagine that she would also have run on other railways in the same livery as I assume repainting would be expensive. Does anyone know where, when? Taking this further what were the other 'Jinties' that also passed themselves off as Thomas? Thanks for any help, pointers, etc, on this. Regards, Alex.
