  1. I'm very much a believer in simplest is best and have a total of 5 analogue Gaugemaster controllers. 3 of which are feedback models - 2 panel mounted and one handheld. I have a lovely little series D twin track (the flat one) for my rolling road and for my wheel cleaner. For my workbench test track I bought a very old 100M very cheap, as not working. Gaugemaster guarantee their controllers for life so I sent it to them with an honest covering note and it was returned promptly, fixed at no charge and post free. Now, what can be better than that? Great service and good straight forward product. Recommended!
  2. Agree 100%. It must be a thankless task having a teflon organisation and a clueless "account manager" as a client.
  3. Nice gentle program but as another poster pointed out, poorish camera work which frustrated seeing exactly what he was doing. Also frustrating not to actually see some of the more essential steps - elements of "here is a bit I prepared earlier". Railways nationalised in the 60's - ouch!
  4. I think I got some nice Christmas pressies but my wife and I just domestic servants on a non stop basis to our extended family so likely be tomorrow before I can savour them. Question, at what point do we get looked after?

  6. Oh dear, it looks absolutely fantastic, I'll have to have at least one - 46256 for a start. eBay will be a big winner - there must be a huge number of the current models out there to now be shifted.
  7. Scottish Government and Scottish Transport Minister under pressure so they have to be seen to be doing (or at least saying) something. Frankly I don't think they have a clue about what they'd be letting themselves in for. Having said that, as a customer, I was quite impressed with state operated East Coast (although their livery left something to be desired!) It would be good if the unions and operators could come together to fashion a first class service but sadly I just don't see it. The whole railway thing is completely screwed up by a mixture of government regulation and big business drive for profit. Usually the SNP government seek to link all issues with the their crusade for Scottish independence - can't see the connection here, so again don't see it happening, but wouldn't be disappointed to be proved wrong if they can sort out our railways, starting with the last train home to Perth from Edinburgh - a dreadful experience.
  8. Why is it often nigh impossible to contact small suppliers. Surely their ordering customers are their lifeblood. Even a once a week defined time for phone answering would be helpful.

Many also have a full time "real" job, perhaps you rang while they were at work.

Dave that I can understand and sympathise but I always phone during times given on website. My thrust is not to be critical, more that if they were organised they might make a better living.

  9. What methods of coupling has everyone tried on the 24 and what works best? I tried the supplied standard couplings with the right angled adapter just to see how that might work but found they tended to sag. (One of my approaches with other locos has been to make a more discreet and wider loop out of brass wire and glue that into the pocket where there has not been any easy fix to the chassis.) Advice appreciated. PS Everyone happy with the wonky wiper at one end?
  10. Why are weddings so expensive? Daughter gets married on 15th and cost of one day would buy the most fantastic layout and collection of kit that would keep me amused for years.

Weddings are as expensive as you make them. We had 40 guests for ceremony at town house and meal at local hotel, £10 a head. Disco and buffet at night for anyone else. Bought loose flowers online with enough for buttonholes and bouquet for about 40p each. Plain 3 layer cake which someone decorated, wife got a designer dress for 1/3 of price and friend did alterations. All-in £2k max. We're not tight, we just have other things to spend money on. It was our day, the way we wanted it - no fuss

  12. Are DS10, D11 and D13 Anchoridge motors still available and if so, what would they cost?
  13. Ch Davy, checked Steve's "Locos through Alloa" list and he had recorded D5031, D5084 and D5092 - I think these were all "skinheads". No class 25s listed.
  14. That must have been taken when certain people weren't looking! .... but good pic Davy.
  15. A question to throw into the mix - Many photographs of Perth shed in the mid sixties show several A4s in steam usually facing in the "down" direction. These A4s include some of those transferred north ostensibly for the 3 hour Glasgow/Aberdeen expresses via the Strathmore line such as 60019, 60026 and 60034 as well as the long established Scottish A4s such as 60009, 60024 and 60031. How did they get there or why were they there - I maybe should know but I can't recall.
  16. As Jamie says, Alloa is set up and fit and well at our club premises. Since its first outing in 2008 at Model Rail Scotland it has visited many parts of the UK, including Doncaster, Perth, North Shields, Stafford and Wigan before Model Rail Scotland again in 2013. In 2014 we took it to Railex at Aylesbury and to Warley at the NEC in Birmingham. In 2015 we took it to Wakefield and, as Bon Accord said, we were at Model Rail Scotland earlier this year. We are anticipating an invite to go to Perth again next summer which we are all looking forward to. In the meantime, to keep us occupied and entertained, we are building an even bigger layout - again an actual location in Scotland, OO gauge and late 50's early 60's ..... and on which Chas can run all 38 of his "Coronations"!
  17. In railway modelling it's what you feel is right, not what is actually "right". As for buying stuff, things change. Yes it's tough for the traditional shop but it was also tough for the blacksmith when we started driving cars and not riding horses and for canal boats when we took to rails.
  18. Basic is OK, falling apart is not! The upholstery actually looked like it had been systematically vandalised. It does seem this set is a one-off as I have enjoyed every other 125 trip between Perth and London on the Inverness service over many years. On the day in question we got off at York to change onto a York - London electric to allow us to change again at Peterborough for trundle across to Norwich. Didn't particularly enjoy the Peterborough - Norwich and pitied those who had endured the train all the way from Manchester. The Norwich to London the next day was very nice and a bargain - first class advance purchase single on 3.30pm (very off peak) with a senior railcard - £9.90.
  19. On trips to London from Perth to visit family, my wife and I find the no change service (Inverness/Kings X) leaving Perth around 10am and returning from Kings X at noon highly convenient and usually offering the best fare. It is Virgin East Coast operated and uses the still excellent 125 sets - or excellent until the other week. My wife travelled north on the Wednesday and complained about the pretty dreadful condition of the first class coach as did a number of other passengers. For reasons I'll not go into, we were both then travelling back down the next day and of course I anticipated correctly the same 125 set (power car 43316 at south end). The first class coach was absolutely dreadful and even if it had been offered as standard class, passengers would still have had the same cause for complaint. The train staff were all excellent and catering reasonable. When I commented to them about the condition of the rolling stock they said it was "hired in"! It was an absolute shocker. Fortunately the return on the Sunday was a set that was of the type and standard that we normally experience and although not in its first flush of youth, comfortable, clean and intact!
  20. Was not sorry to see the last of Homebase locally. I must have walked out of there 90% of the time empty handed due to not having what I required or too expensive by far. I only went there out of laziness as it was close by but soon gave up on it completely. A pretty awful shop for DIY. I'm surprised Argos shops are still successful as it must be a most inconvenient way of online shopping - you effectively buy on line but have to go to usually a city centre location to do it and then carry home your purchase. Not surprised Sainsbury, if successful buyer, will close a large number.

Indeed Dave, I copped the Duke on Stirling shed in the summer of '62 and yes we need one of our group to splash out - maybe the guy with all the Duchesses as he'll be wondering what entire class to acquire next!

Hmmmph! Just returned from headquarters where we are busy prepping Daddy layout for Model Rail Scotland and it seems there is no appetite for the revolutionary concentric DCC T gauge end to end model of Edinburgh Princes Street to Dundee West so Larbert it is. Such is life. However, on the positive side, there is just so much stuff we can justify running through Larbert you'll need to come armed with your Ian Allan combined volume (or parts 3 and 4 if pocket money or Birthday and Christmas presents didn't stretch to such luxury) plus pen and ruler for neat underlining. Cops a-plenty! On a serious note, info on Larbert much appreciated, particularly photos taken at known dates within late 50s early 60s time frame.
