  1. A bit early for you , but in the late 1980's there were quite regular stone trains from iirc Stoke Gifford to Machen quarry with ARC PGA and a few ex bulk salt PGA mixed in , I have a photo somewhere , will see if I can find it for you , as said above about the Tilcon trains , I remember seeing the Tilcon PGA wagons through Newport , poss with a pair of class 37 upfront . The other PGA I saw through Newport were a rake of the ECC PGA that worked from Croft quarry , I think they went to Marcroft at Swansea for repairs. The Redland self discharge train used to work to Cardiff Tidal sidings but don't know where it went from there , not sure if the ordinary Redland PGA ever came to Wales mind you...
  2. MEA ran from Corby to Aldwarke with scrap , these were the EWS ones , only seen one picture of this train
  3. I have had a look at the couplings , it is on one end of a wagon only , there is / was a slight downward drop , I have checked the others when coupled up they are fine , taken the NEM out and give it a slight bend upwards , that has solved the problem ! A great addition to our steel wagon fleet , will run these with some BZA and JSA opens so well done for making these wagons , the BBA has quite a few variations that could be made .... Just need someone to make the BVA coil / slab wagon now
  4. My BLA wagons have the same problem with the buffers , some pointing upwards others seem to have no glue and are nearly falling out , not a great problem as I can stick them back in , I don't know if it's just me but the couplings on one end only droop down ?
  5. Hello all , i have set up a Facebook group dedicated to the modelling of the metals era from the late 1980's onwards , topics will be wagon types , traffic of all types of metals , locos , modelling loads , layout ideas based on actual locations , we have 100 plus members so far , if you have an interest hopefully the following link will work for you to join Regards Baz https://www.facebook.com/groups/950962518665076/?__cft__[0]=AZXABj--SPQYN5MFZLPpycjtch6EIcApKz7_kwUlDDZ0Mw4AWkxUoBG4hWYVSYUOF_xCuiauiPtp1vdQLVCKcoqing7gMSKy2jjOWzwuWXScsENPP8TdYODSE-zhqtmDIISpwblECIXiBuO_8cjzRChBTsiol5kw06T4_VsLPhMzH-64IMZc3lJFCce3Zto0ChR4U6ccVs6icB8-M_qrBoJd&__tn__=-UK-R
  6. With regard to the article in Railway Modeller , will have a look for it over the weekend and can pm you , just need to find it !

  8. Does it look too big or about the right size ? if i had the time i would make a silicon mold and try casting them...
  9. Ingot made many years ago , maybe slightly too big , but can be sanded down to a more acceptable size
  10. I tend to make my own loads , slab is made from 4mm PVC board as used in advertising signs , sprayed various shades of grey , 4mm gives you a slab depth of 1ft so prob just about right thickness , cut to various lengths as some slab can be very long ! , coils can be made from card cut into strips of various widths and wrapped around a tube or shaft @ 10mm , stick the card with pritstick paper glue as you roll them up , painted with either grey or polished steel paint , strapping made from thin sticky labels cut into 0.5 mm strips and stuck on , a dab of red paint for the banding clip , use a white pen to add some markings . Bloom can be made with Plastruct square rod prob 4mm again gives a 1 ft square bar or off cuts of PVC window sill of the right thickness can be cut into strips again painted as above Ingots made of DAS clay shaped to the approx shape , left to dry then can be sanded to final shape , paint as above . I must confess of all the model coils available be it 3d printed , cast metal , resin , plastic kit in two halves , in my mind the only way to a realistic coil is to make them as described , bear in mind pic shown coil made about 25 years ago
  11. Hello all , I have been looking for an old copy of Rail magazine which had an article by Paul Shannon IIRC about the EWS wagon fleet over about five pages , it had pictures of some of the wagon fleet including MEA , SSA etc.. I have mislaid my copy ! I'm not too sure of the year but it will be from about poss 1997 to approx 1999 / 2000 . If anyone can find it and let me know which copy it's in I can get one off the likes of eBay Regards Baz

  13. There was an article in Rail Express a few years ago about this place not sure which issue , will see if I can find it , some of the wagons here were the ex nitric acid TTA wagons that are painted blue , MODA army wagons , Alcan PCA I think amongst others I cannot remember , will see what I can find
  14. Hello all , i have just set up a Facebook group dedicated to the modelling of the metals era from the late 1980's onwards , topics will be wagon types , traffic of all types of metals , locos , modelling loads , layout ideas based on actual locations , we have 50 plus members so far , if you have an interest hopefully the following link will work for you to join Regards Baz https://www.facebook.com/groups/950962518665076/?__cft__[0]=AZXABj--SPQYN5MFZLPpycjtch6EIcApKz7_kwUlDDZ0Mw4AWkxUoBG4hWYVSYUOF_xCuiauiPtp1vdQLVCKcoqing7gMSKy2jjOWzwuWXScsENPP8TdYODSE-zhqtmDIISpwblECIXiBuO_8cjzRChBTsiol5kw06T4_VsLPhMzH-64IMZc3lJFCce3Zto0ChR4U6ccVs6icB8-M_qrBoJd&__tn__=-UK-R
  15. Cardiff brickyard sidings , dealt with mainly coil , pic by Brian Rolley
  16. This was my thoughts also , been having a quick look through may stash of magazines , but no luck so far , i'm sure the class 02 was in an issue
  17. Just a bit south of Yorkshire , this is the Rugby cement sidings that were at Toton in the early 1980's , i think this may suit your needs !
  18. It’s easy to blame the young - yes i do blame the young , traveling home today , when arriving at Bargoed about 6 -8 youngsters got on the train , most with bikes , no masks , next stop Pengam again another load of youngsters get on , some again with bikes , who try to use the front carriage doors , which are clearly marked out of use , guard told them not to use these doors , to which they gave some verbal abuse , this in turn along with all the others who had got on , ended up with the train departing 10 mins late due to these youngsters non compliance of social distance , no masks , two get off and train departs , only to get to Hengoed for more youngsters to get on with no masks ... Yet we are told it is mandatory to wear masks , but the word mandatory is obviously not meant for them , any older person on the train social distances , wears a mask and follows the rules so why don't they , because they don't care about anyone else or themselves ..if it was they young who were suffering from this virus don't you think the older generation of parents , grandparents would do their upmost to protect them . I have been working all through this pandemic , my job involves the packaging of masks for the protection of people working 6 and 7 day weeks , so there needs enforcement of no mask no travel , the trains i catch are still advertised for essential travel only and for key workers , obviously a 16 year old on his bike is essential ... i think not !
  19. needs to lockdown the teenagers ! as probably in most areas they are becoming out of control , just look at the likes for Cardiff bay to see what is happening , they should stop non essential travel to the likes of Barry , when a family arrive at a station deny them travel simple as .
  20. I have been catching the train to work and back all through this pandemic , passenger numbers were next to nothing , with car parks at Pengam etc..that once were full with commuters to Cardiff now empty , since the relaxing of the lock down this has remained virtually the same , either people are using their cars or still working from home , the trains have now been lengthened to 4 car units in the last few weeks to account for social distancing , with seats now out of use and mandatory face coverings . Whilst the trains still remain for the use of key workers and essential travel only , along with myself and 3 - 5 people daily use it for this purpose , the rest of the time it is used by teenagers and kids with bikes , drinking etc... to travel around on with no restrictions in place ( masks etc... ) guards just let them travel . The stickers on the platforms about staying 2 meters apart are ripped up , plastic signs are ripped down , seat covers for out of use seating are removed , thrown around , bottles of drink rolling around , so whist i adhere to the rules , seems most others disregard everything , the only people i can blame are the youngsters for all this , so it is possible it is the youngsters that are spreading the virus around without any care or thought for anyone else , so a ban on non essential travel would be welcome but how enforceable it would be remains as nearly 5 months of this nothing as yet has been done to stop non essential travel so far .

  22. The P&G bogie tankers as far as i am aware were never used on the incline , being loaded in Corkickle sidings along with the unloading of caustic soda tanks (ICI ) , the wagons that worked over the incline were ICI PEA soda ash wagon , UKF TTA Phosphoric acid , Albright and Wilson PCA tripolyphosphate , Lever Brothers PCA tripolyphosphate , Albright and Wilson TUB Phosphoric acid . There was the use of HTV coal wagons from the local colliery also ( Used also for balanced workings ) I have a plan to make a working model of this location in OO , with a few slight changes. PS Covhops and Presflos were also used
  23. What a genius idea for the opening doors , will follow this thread with interest
  24. Nearly all the local shows we have done , we have no payment for , usually there is no hint of money coming our way , our expenses would not be great anyway , plus you get a bacon roll , tea and lunch thrown in . Where this becomes an issue is a two day shows that we are / due to exhibit later this year with fuel costs , hotels , (evening meals paid by ourselves which can be pretty expensive at the likes of Harvester , but that's our choice ) . As long as most of the expences are covered I would probably wave or reduce the likes of fuel , covering some of the cost ourselves if this would help out the exhibitions get back to some sort of normality in the short term .
