  1. They also travelled further afield. I recall a girlfriend when I lived in the Glasgow area whose dad's company car was an Austin 1800 or Maxi with the registration POO...D. Its replacement was a Vauxhall, PYL...F and I recall her saying that her dad's car used to be POO and now its PILL.
  2. I am curious about my latest arrival, pre-Tops B334126N. This wagon was previously issued singly in 0 gauge, and recently as part of pack S in 00. A few of the 00 version appeared singly on eBay, indeed there is one still listed as I type this. These appear to have been split from sets as the one which I purchased arrived unboxed although sold as brand new. Anyway my curiosity covers two points:- 1) What does the N suffix stand for? 2) On both the 0 and 00 versions the data panel is in a very light grey, as if it may have been originally black but subsequently part covered in lime dust. I did not find this wagon on Paul Bartlett's website nor any other hopper with similar shade of data panel. Is there a reason why the data panel background is lighter on this wagon?

Sorry, Accurascale Fran, I was never going to buy another three pack from the second batch as I already bought six Castle Cement PCAs in 2019 from your first issue, and nine would have been too long for the loop on my layout. Thanks to your good selves at Accurascale and to Rails of Sheffield for that opportunity to buy just one more single wagon. The prototype CAIB wagon 10633 later joined the VTG Castle Cement wagon pool so, exercising modeller's licence, I made my assumption that 10633 was not immediately rebranded and would have run together with Castle Cement branded specimens. My Accurascale Rails exclusive CAIB 10633 arrived today from Rails, exceptionally well packed. Lovely packaging and complete with a limited edition certificate. Looks good and will soon be having its first run coupled with my six Castle Cement branded examples.
  4. I'll second that. I wanted another Bachmann FNA from the new release to go with my two from the first release. With15% discount on recommended retail price plus the free postage on orders over 50 pounds, TMC came in cheapest at 50.95 delivered. Wagon ordered late Thursday evening and arrived yesterday, in good quality packaging. Excellent service.

OK, We could have Campbell's Soup for starters then for the main meal Oxo gravy and Saxa salt to season the New Zealand Canterbury Lamb, or if you prefer something frozen from Birds Eye, with Geest bananas and Lyons Maid Ice Cream for dessert, finally a few Peak Freans biscuits spread with Golden Shred marmalade, then adjourn to the pub for Watneys beer and KP Nuts.

  8. I recently placed a pair of Bachmann blue suburbans on eBay for auction, taking advantage of the 80% fee discount. Within minutes I was messaged that if I would change to buy-it-now he would give me 30 pounds for it, plus postage. I agreed to do so, but got clobbered for fees - the full fee based on his opening bid of 9.99 (discount forfeited for ending early) plus the full buy-it-now fee. I held my nerve with the second coach. There was again only one bidder, so it went for the start price of 9.99. At least for this second coach sale eBay allowed my fee discount.
  9. I had a Dapol 121 in 00 gauge, bought new. After very little running, the wheels were intermittently spinning and when I opened it up the wheels of the bogie at one end were only turning slowly as the claw from the drive shaft had chewed up the plastic of the flexible coupling. I disconnected the shaft to the offending bogie, but due to the weight of the model, the single bogie still driving the model had insufficient adhesion. I raised the matter with the service address supplied in the Dapol paperwork but never got any response. I sold it on eBay as a non-runner for around half what I originally paid. A very disappointing model.
  10. Just as well if they're falling apart like that I bought one of those as my wife an I have both done some footplate experience on the full size Manston on the Swanage Railway. I have been disappointed with the model. Already had to rewire the loco to tender electrical connections and the body is a poor fit on the chassis. Anyway back on topic. Hattons pre-owned. An Accurascale Nuclear PFA pack which I missed when they were first issued had been on my wants list with Hattons. They e-mailed me a few weeks ago to tell me they had now sourced a second hand used example. They were asking 75 pounds and I bought it. Very pleased. All the original packaging with the wagons and containers still wrapped in their individual original papers , all look brand new and like they have never been taken out of the box and run. One satisfied customer of Hattons pre-owned department.
  11. All those model shops in Glasgow which I recall from my childhood. Clyde Model Dockyard at the corner inside the Argyle Arcade is fondly remembered but nearby there was also Wylie Hill's toy department at the Buchanan Street end of the Argyle Arcade which stocked Hornby-Dublo and Tri-ang trains as also did Lewis's on Argyle Street. For kits such as Peco Wonderful Wagons it would be a trek along Argyle Street to Caledonia Model Company at Anderston, now an unrecognisable location due to redevelopment but I think near the current Anderston Cross railway station. In my university years I would discover Glassfords in Cambridge Street. Old Mr. Glassford with his brown overalls was reminiscent of Ronnie Barker "Open All Hours" or perhaps of Norman Hatton at 180 Smithdown Road Liverpool. I recall Glassfords still had a few Hornby-Dublo 3250 EMU power cars in stock into the early 1970s, one of which was bought by a university pal and which I later fell heir to when he sadly died young from cancer. I still have a Hornby-Dublo D14 suburban, crudely repainted in matt black as an engineer's coach, which I bought second hand from Glassfords for a few shillings, more years ago than I care to remember. Then there was MacMillan Models on the south side. I got to know the late Bill MacMillan and his wife Jean and became involved for some years as treasurer of his Cathcart Show before I left the Glasgow area in 1989. I was introduced to the delights of Hattons 180 Smithdown Road shop in Liverpool in 1974 when the West Coast Main Line electrification was extended to Glasgow and there was a special offer day ticket from British Rail. Three pounds for a three hour run to Liverpool or Manchester Four pounds for a four hour run to Birmingham or Five pounds for a five hour run to London. I sampled all of them that year. Liverpool became a monthly trip for me, always on a dark green Liverpool Corporation Leyland Atlantean from Lime Street out to Smithdown Road and returning home with a big cardboard box full of bargain price Hornby-Dublo, packed personally in the shop by the late Norman Hatton and most of which was quickly sold on to fellow collectors though I still retain a few items.

Considering all the one off special purpose vehicles which Hornby and Bachmann have produced I am surprised that no manufacturer seems to have produced a generator van based on a modified Mk1 Full Brake. Such vehicles can often be found attached to Mark 1 or Mark 2 stock on railtour trains hauled by normally freight only locos such as the 56 or 66, and are similar to vehicles which were formerly to be seen on Irish Rail. My own crude attempt based on a Hornby Mk1 BG frequently gets a run with Mark 1 or Mark 2 stock behind a Hattons or Hornby 66.
  13. Welcome from Scotland. I have many cousins in BC. Chilliwack, Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Sooke, Qualicum Beach etc. Not been out that way for ten years. I used to enjoy the rides on the RDC on Vancouver island, sadly no more.
  14. I ought NEVER to have visited this thread. Once I saw how much Accurascale my fellow forumites were ordering I went on an Accurascale binge. Within the space of six months since January my tally of Accurascale delivered or on order has up gone from a relatively benign 36 wagons, 0 coaches and 0 locos to 55 wagons, 7 coaches and 1 loco. Oh my poor bank balance, the Accurascale Addiction has hit real bad. Perhaps it is a blessing that some financial headwinds are now beginning to kick in to deter me from ordering even more Accuracscale.
  15. Today I repaired a dead Hymek. Unscrew and unclip the body, unclip and lift out the motor bogie and inspect it for broken contacts. Problem was a piece of fluff wedged between one of the brushes and the commutator. Cleaned, oiled and re-assembled and running sweetly within around ten minutes. If only fixing modern Chinese Hornby would be so simple. I am utterly baffled as to why my Hornby Clan is totally dead and my wife's Hogwarts Castle keeps shorting out.
  16. Wow! Can't see how these are in sudden demand, given the plethora of highly detailed stuff now coming on the market. I bought one of those Triang dock shunters on EBay about five years ago for three quid. It only needed a good clean up and new pick ups to make it a runner.
  17. Not such a daft idea. Watching the Hornby Magazine video of the new Accurascale suburbans this morning prompted me to get my Hornby Dublo super detail pair out of their boxes and give them a run on the layout this morning and they looked surprisingly acceptable for sixty year old models. Though I'll probably go for a few state of the art Accurascale ones, maybe a pair of M region crimsons and once I've seen them in the flesh should go for two or three Sc ones in maroon from a later batch. Having been brought up in Scotland I best remember these coaches in crimson or maroon, though I recall when the Weardale Railway first re-opened they ran a rake of three rather scruffy blue suburbans which were loaned to them, including one of the lavatoried versions.

  19. Yet.... I have more than enough Bachmann and Hornby Dublo suburbans already but these new Accurascale coaches with their diecast chassis will be a must have for me, once the Sc prefixes are announced if not sooner.
  20. I only pre-ordered the Hornby Captain Tom because of the 40 pounds to NHS Charities. When it became apparent that Hornby were about to disappoint because they had oversold, I bought instead from a dealer whom I have used in the past and who had secured half a dozen by Hornby at retail price and who did not wish to profit on them. I paid the retail price, plus the postage and Paypal fees, total came to around 81 pounds IIRC but I had the satisfaction of knowing that in securing that model for purchasers like myself the dealer had given the 40 pounds to the NHS which I originally intended. At the time, some private individuals who had been allocated two by Hornby were selling one on for profit which seemed unfair. Since that episode I sometimes sell on eBay with 10% going to NHS Charities Together and I would never look to sell my Hornby Captain Tom for personal profit.
  21. I saw 37 422 passing through Carlisle Railway station yesterday, hauling a 68 dead in tow. First time I have seen it in this livery. Class 37 loco group website suggests it worked through to York.
  22. Price of 112.50 seems over the top in my opinion. I owned one of these when I was young, sold it in the 1980s. Nostalgia made me buy a replacement only a few years ago. At that time there were several on eBay. The one which I chose was not the cheapest, but was boxed mint and lived up to its description as a good runner, and indeed continues to do so. At the time I paid 40 pounds which was much more than the purchase and resale price of my original.
