  1. On 25th August 2009, I rode on the Dayliner service, consisting of #6135 and #6148 from Victoria to Qualicum Beach and back for a lunch date. The neatly manicured lawn and freshly painted station building with its hanging baskets at Qualicum Beach contrasted with the deterioraring permanent way. After returning to Victoria, I photographed the ECS working, as it cleared Johnson Street bridge on its way back to the Roundhouse.
  2. Some great memories here. I have visited Canada five times, four of which included Vancouver Island where I have cousins. In 1987 the Dayliner was still sufficiently speedy that it waited time at Nanaimo where you could alight and buy food from a refreshment truck during the layover. We rode the train from Victoria to Qualicum Beach and back one day and on another day from Victoria to Nanaimo and back. Here is #6133 at Nanaimo on October 20th, 1987.
  3. Just up the road from my cousin then - she lives on Kaltasin Road, Sooke.
  4. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dapol-Wrenn-Collectors-Club-WRCC21-Cinzano-Ventilated-Van-B545513-LE-of-80-/154350886844?hash=item23f0079fbc%3Ag%3AXg8AAOSwpZtgO8UP&nma=true&si=JIKpHVSwGeRYrvkC4Hy%2F5%2Bbzq4k%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Even Dapol wagons, of which there are countless limited editions, seem to be now fetching fancy prices (started at 99p).
  5. I guess you got lucky there. I just sold 2 x shorty Mk3s, (one BR blue/grey and one Virgin Rail) for £9.50 plus £3.20 postage two weeks ago. I was quite happy with that as I had started the pair at 99p.
  6. I bought two job lots on eBay this evening. Had them in the one basket then when I tried to pay I got a message saying the purchases would be split into two lots as one seller was on managed payments, and inviting me to pay for Lot 1 only. Followed the link to pay for lot 1 via Paypal and got a black page. Tried again and second time round I was able to pay but the hour glass is showing on eBay as payment pending and there is a message on Paypal "This is a temporary authorisation to make sure your funding source will cover the payment. Your funding source will be charged when eBay completes your order." Then I paid for the second item and it went through straight away without giving me the option of "pay after delivery" which I would normally have used with Paypal. I am becoming somewhat disillusioned with eBay.
  7. The jacket arrived at Heathrow on Sunday where the seller sorted out customs. It was then flown to Edinburgh and has been delivered today by DHL. I'm thinking the other buyer who had complained of having to pay customs duty may have been based outside of UK. Nothing extra to pay and all's well that ends well.
  8. My wife purchased an expensive jacket on eBay. Item described as made in Pakistan, but item location shown as Preston UK. Seller has 100% feedback. We received tracking information last night that the item has been dispatched direct to us from Karachi, Pakistan. Re-checking seller's feedback today, there is a recent positive feedback on an identical item which says item is very good quality but buyer had to pay customs duty. Something wrong there surely. I don't see why, as a buyer living within UK, I should be liable for any additional customs duty if item location is shown on eBay as UK. Quid iuris?
  9. The six-wheel Dark Star tanker is once again available from Simply Southern, according to their website. Perhaps a fresh batch with a different running number. https://shop.simplysouthern.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_65&product_id=510
  10. I received the notification yesterday re the new fees and requiring my bank details if I want to continue selling beyond 30th April. It seems there are pros and cons to it. Possible higher sales prices in a few cases if buyers can now pay by card. No more Paypal fees but eBay's cut from the sale price is increased by an equivalent amount. This is effectively an increase in fees in cases where seller pays by cheque. A dispute fee, £14 or £16.80, depending on whether private or trade seller, payable if eBay finds against you as a seller, which considering eBay already tend to side with the buyer is going to financially incentivise eBay to be even more pro-buyer. PayPal already have my bank details and I'm not keen on also giving them to eBay. The fewer organisations which have direct debit access to my bank the better. I already had to cancel my TV licence direct debit because it got scammed (luckily caught by the bank) and now back to paying my licence annually when the reminder comes in. I'm considering taking a break from selling on eBay for a few months while I wait to read of others' experiences of how the new system is working out.
  11. There seems no longer any point in pre-orders. With Bachmann I waited over 5 years for my Hattons Mk2f RFB and when it finally became available the price was almost twice what had been originally quoted. With Rails I have now waited 3 years for the Caley 0-6-0 which they commissioned from Bachmann. Last year I was left disappointed by unfulfilled pre-orders for Hornby, through both Hornby's own website and a retailer. Luckily I was later able to source the items elsewhere. So I will no longer pre-order any Bachmann or Hornby. Before finding this thread, I had already made an exception and pre-ordered the Abellio Scotrail Active Travel 153 from Kernow but I will not be placing any other pre-orders with anyone for items from the 2021 Hornby catalogue, and I won't even buy the Bachmann 2021 catalogue. If, at a later date, something I would like is readily available in a model shop when I happen to visit, or turns up in a box-shifter's bargain bin, then I may buy. Otherwise I can do without.
  12. Thanks. For now I have ordered a replacement HM2000 from Hattons, but I will now have two laid aside so I have bookmarked your link which could come in very helpful in fixing them.
  13. I bought an NBR brake 3rd from Jadlam Racing Models two weeks ago. As of this morning, when I checked their website, they still have some of the NBR range of coaches showing as "in stock" while others are now showing as "pre-order".
  14. I had the same problem yesterday. Was reading a topic when irrelevant pop-ups suddenly began to appear filling more and more of the screen. I tried to close one of them and got a message saying "are you sure". So then I clicked "Yes" and got a message from RMWeb which said this topic will no longer appear on my topics list or searches. I had to restart my computer to remove the pop-ups. Can't recall now which topic it was.
  15. I used an HM2000 on my layout for a few years. Eventually I had an issue with one of the reversing witches making intermittent contact and laid it aside and bought a replacement HM2000 around two years ago, Now one of the rotary speed dials is similarly making intermittent contact. Probably a simple matter of a worn, loose or dirty contact inside the control unit. Is there any way of opening these units up for repair?
  16. A fascinating little film. I have one of the Farish Pannier Tanks, dating from the 1970s. There was a recent post on the eBay Madness thread about an identical loco which had a badly fatigued metal body. I had mine out of its box today for inspection and the body is still in excellent condition with no signs of fatigue cracking. While it was out of the box I gave it a run on my layout and it still goes well. Have I just been lucky getting a good alloy casting? Were these models prone to Mazak rot? Or perhaps the one listed in eBay had been abused in the past?
  17. Fondly remembered from several visits in the 1970s. When I lived in the Glasgow area and Glasgow-Preston was first electrified in 1974 I recall buying a £3 day return from Glasgow to Liverpool and returning with a big cardboard box full of Hornby-Dublo, from Hattons. Sadly I promptly sold most of it on at cost to my Glasgow clubmates.
  18. There was this explanation posted on this thread recently that Rails have been stretched with staff shortages and high volumes of orders. "Rails have been having significant delays in handling pre orders and new orders, since November. It was reported on this forum that members had had to contact Rails about long delays in processing their SECR van orders, and they reported that Rails advised they had problems due to the volume of product and staff sickness. Unfortunately this has continued into December and on into January, probably compounded by the large amount of new stock coming in from Bachmann and Hornby. I had several pre orders that remained unprocessed for more than a working week after arrival, and I contacted Rails by phone to find out whether my account was working. It turned out that the problem was they were having difficulty handling the volume of new deliveries, so were not starting the pre order fulfilment for several days." Despite this they can sometimes be quick, possibly they could be prioritising the bigger orders but there is a lack of consistency. I purchased from Rails own website, new Hornby Scotrail coaches on 17th January which arrived here on 21st, yet some cheap second hand wagons which I bought from them on 15th January via their eBay RailsVault website were still showing yesterday on eBay as not yet dispatched. I've now been able to make contact with them regarding this order and hopefully it should be fulfilled later this week.
  19. I was looking on the Web yesterday to try to source a couple of Hornby Scotrail coaches which I missed last year and are now out of stock with the major box shifters. Collett's came up as having them still in stock and at a very competitive price. I had never dealt with them before but having seen some good reviews here on RMWeb I thought I would take a chance. I placed my order yesterday afternoon. Within minutes my order was acknowledged and I also received a personal e-mail from Leigh thanking me for my business. The courier arrived at lunchtime today, with both models, exceptionally well packed and delivered within 24 hours of ordering. I could certainly recommend Colletts and will definitely buy from them again.
  20. Model Rail Scotland in Glasgow, Friday 21st February 2020. A day trip on the Pendolino from Carlisle. It had become a tradition to buy the Hornby catalogue every year at the Glasgow show. No Glasgow show this year so I had to mail order my Hornby catalogue which arrived yesterday. .
  21. After a break of about a month, I bought 3 eBay items last weekend. One from north of England delivered by Hermes on Wednesday. One from Peters Spares, Warrington, delivered by Royal Mail yesterday (Thursday). One from Bradford are postcode, delivered by Royal Mail today (Friday). Looks like the situation may be easing, outside of the areas referenced in the link posted by DIW above.
  22. A valid point. My wife and I have been physically visiting our local Morrisons for groceries twice per week, yet my daughter is relying on home delivery. I refuse to deal in home delivery. Tried it once with Tesco. Rude driver demanding an instant signature without allowing time to check contents. Contents bore little relation to what was ordered and was mainly short dated stuff which we would not normally eat. "X, Y and Z were out of stock so we substituted......". In fairness, after complaining, Tesco gave a partial refund.
  23. That depends on where you live. I got mine but my wife is still waiting for hers. She has tried several times to book an appointment. Can't even buy the flu jab privately as the local pharmacy who previously offered to do them for £10 were told to use all their supplies this winter for nominated key workers.
  24. Please forgive my cynicism. I agree that in terms of numbers vaccinated against Covid we come out tops over our friends on the European mainland. However, as far as the Moderna is concerned, I have friends in USA who have already had this vaccine injected into them, yet UK is well down the queue and is unlikely to receive supplies before April. I do have some concern that the European Medicines Agency say that they need to do further checking of test results and quality control on the AstraZeneca before they can approve it, and are unlikely to be able to approve it before the end of January. I'm hoping our UK authorities haven't taken any shortcuts for the sake of prestige in being first to approve our home grown product. In the rush to vaccinate against Covid, the promised programme of Flu vaccinations appears to have evaporated and my wife is still waiting on hers. In a more normal year she would have received it during October or November.
  25. So true. When Scottish Borders was on level one restrictions and had seen very little coronovirus for some time, I committed myself to a temp bus driving job. The job just finished in the nick of time on 31st December, allowing me to lock down, as virus cases have escalated rapidly here in the past couple of weeks. I'll be 70 next birthday and wife is a cancer and pneumonia survivor so we'll be adhering strictly to the lockdown. Back to driving model trains instead of full size buses.
