  1. Is that a model by a certain manufacturer that seems to get leds wrong on its locos?
  2. When I was working on the tube, we had the Victoria Line totally closed for a few hours due to a fox on the track. Note - the Vic line is totally underground, except for a mile long branch exiting up into the depot near the north end. Apparently the fox entered the station at ground level, used the escalator to go down, then the public walkways to the platform, where it gained access to the track and continued its journey through the track tunnels. It eventually surfaced at another station further along the line, again using passenger walkways and escalators to gain the surface exit. And yes, the stations and line were open when it first went down; the service was suspended until it had exited. I believe Warren Street (on Euston Road) was either the entrance or exit point.
  3. Quick question. This embraces both Win 10 & Win 11, not sure which thread to use! I have Win 10 Pro 64 bit on this desktop, upgraded some time ago. Without checking, I think I have the Microsoft licence for 5 (?) machines, as I'm certain I also loaded it with that licence on my old (small tablet-size) laptop a few years ago. I can't at the moment upgrade to Win 11 (would want Pro/64 bit) on the desktop as it is not ready for it, I need to change mother board/processor etc before I can do this. However, I've just bought my first-ever 'proper' laptop, with Win 11 Home 64 bit installed. Obviously as supplied it was licensed, but I think by now it has aligned to my Microsoft license (it shows on my account). Can I without fear of deleting everything, use my license to change this laptop to Win 11 Pro 64 bit?
  4. Halstead's article is indeed in the April 1984 RM (I have a copy), and should be available online to RM subscribers.
  5. As the thread title says. After a long while in storage, I've installed and cleaned the lathe I acquired a few years ago, only to find a drive belt perished.
  6. I have a VERY old Bec J17 (warts & all) which was running on a Triang (?) chassis complete with X04 and shiny oHrnby wheels. Last year I got a new SEF 0-6-0 etched chassis, Markits wheels, HL gearbox, and a CCT motor. Basic construction of the chassis was completed, still got the details to fit but it got sidelined, I'm on the verge of restarting it. Being aware of the 'stretched' shortcomings of the body, I'd love something better, your version looks good (though not sure about taking on the wheels?). I'm following this with interest, but the old 'Bec' will also survive all this, it's in its 'forever' home just like a pet cat!
  7. What about Limited Edition crisps and bars of chocolate?........
  8. It's the end of June this week. Wasn't the latest update given as here in June?
  9. Tony will like this - last time I was there (1990s?) the unmistakeable sound was heard, and a Deltic pulled in. I can't remember which one though, but it was that hideous blue, not the proper green livery.
  10. Or builds a layout to run it on....
  11. Yes I do that every time. In fact at the last update of RMWeb, Andy changed it from the Blue dot to the whole tile. As matter of interest, this morning it worked perfectly! No pictures since my last visit - maybe that is the reason?
  12. Was there any mention of Oxford at all?
  13. Just to add that I'm not complaining about Jim's pics, or anyone else for that matter. Only wondering why it does it - it's not the end of the world!
  14. Much the same as our club test track then, a big circle with 5 tracks, complete with legs. Stored in a shed and brought in; Admittedly the clubroom but could go outside, and quickly erected. No fishplates, just track soldered down at baseboard edges, and inter-baseboard plugs & sockets.
  15. Can anyone explain this? Whenever I click on this thread ( ie to view posts I haven't seen on previous visits) it NEVER goes to the 1st new post - always a few days back. Today the 1st new post displayed was June 16th, the pic with the fox running along the side of the track. Yet I did a view around teatime yesterday. No other thread seems to do this - they all go the 1st new post. Stewart
  16. My GT3 from the original batch has had the lighting cured. I ripped it out. Much more prototypical.
  17. I'm sure they were flying from RAF Oakington, for years beyond that date. Saw them every day when living in Cambridge and St.Ives.
  18. In the same post above we hear that it is a shame that Mallard is a combination of others, and that locos should be kept running, replacing as necessary parts that wear out.... Surely this is the same thing? ALL locos throughout their (normal)** working life had parts replaced - even your car does. In a major organisation - such as the LNER (other names are available), a loco would enter works and be stripped for overhaul, the parts being sent in different directions for overhaul (or scrap and replacement). Re-assembly was usually with many parts taken from stores stock, so not guaranteed to be from the same loco. Indeed sometimes it could be from a different class if it fitted. Even frames - usually what is regarded as the 'identity' of the loco - were sometimes replaced. **I regard 'normal' working life as what the loco was originally built for; in the case of the A4, LNER use (and subsequent takeover by BR.) In some cases locos would have this extended - sold on to the likes of NCB, or Colonel Stephens light railways, in much the same way as a pre-owned car is bought. After that, preservation (as it has been called for many years, but maybe a better term could be thought of nowadays?). Unless stuffed & mounted, this is not 'normal' service, but it is still an operating life and the loco has to be looked after just as well (or indeed often better) as during its normal life. All part of the history of the particular loco. I also regard any livery applied after withdrawal from normal service (ie pin preservation) as genuine historical livery, as it is carried by the loco during its life. Not carried in normal service maybe, but still genuine at a given point in time.
  19. I too want one of these - I remember 78021 being a regular on the Cambridge-Kettering when we moved to Cambridge in 1959. But do I still want it? Not sure. The price has risen dramatically, and my Bachmann/Crownline/Judith Edge mongrel is just about finished - and I built it.....
  20. It may be OT, but I used to work for Pye Telecom (remember them?) producing Radio comms equipment. I was in the Quality Control section; we used to do temperature checks on radios about to be shipped out. We did a range of tests at room temperature, and epeated them at low temp (say -20C) and high temp (say +40C, the actual temps varied as to the type we were testing). To take one example relevant to this discussion, the RF power fed to the aerial on a typical radio, could drop by 50%, when subjected to a temp change from room temp to high temp, and still be in spec. Other tests also showed similar degradation. It just proves that electronic equipment doesn't remain as efficient at all temperatures.
  21. I lived just round the corner from Chest Junc yard, good to see it mentioned! Never saw an 04 there, always the 2x dep.03s (91 & 92), and the last of the Sentinel steam locos. I had a couple of official visits to the site with the local club and was shocked to find the n.g.! I think I have a photo somewhere. I've also modelled one of the 03s, using custom Railtec transfers, and one of the Sentinels. Stewart
  22. When I was working with the Fire Service and these notices started appearing, they absolutely hated them. At 1st glance it is a good idea. There is an accident, the emergency services arrive, and see the sign. This alerts them of the baby being aboard, they then search for said baby. Good idea? Maybe not. More often than not a 'proud' parent advertising their skill in producing said baby. Think again. Sign on back window, baby at home. Serious crash, time is wasted in searching for non-existent baby, and possibly putting rescuers in danger. The car could be crushed under a lorry, or all occupants flung out. But if no baby, why waste needless effort in searching the crushed car, or searching the nearby ditch?
  23. Just wondering - is that the same design of loco as the VoR no.10?
