  1. Is there any material one could read that distinguishes differences between w class Pecketts ?
  2. Here's my thoughts on how a model goes from Hero to Zero in easy steps.. 1. Model sells out. 2. 50 people phone round 10 shops looking for the last ones. 3. 10 Shop owners get 50 calls 4. Shop owner phones rep, says I could shift at least another two dozen, maybe more. 5. Collectively Rep gets 10 calls with at least 240 potential sales 6. Only takes 2 Reps to call the office, doubles this number to 480 looks good on targets, minimum runs, projections based on the "upside" potential: - all those "at leasts". 7. No one disagrees at the production meeting that the demand isn't there based on what salesforce says. 8. Model comes, with a % uplift in price due to everything that's going on in the world. 9. Some are sold, some others baulk at the price, or bought s/h, changed minds etc. 10. Everyone's got dozens of models, everyone blames the price rise, no need to order more. 11. Price is discounted in shops when the invoices come due, that "upside potential" gets closed off. 12. End of year comes and for everything else there's ebay. 13. Manufactures left with x00's stock as no follow up orders are recieved, balance sheet gets revised. 14. To break the cycle, manufacturer announces a new exciting model... return to step 1. It's not just model railways, look at Hatchimals on ebay.. RRP £59, climbed upto £130+ by early December, (can't imagine why ???), tonight there in the £80's, with "unprecedented demand new stock is ordered and will be here in January"... 2 years ago it was Disney's Frozen..., shame it doesn't seem to work like this for petrol & food however.
  3. missed two crucial words "may be a rare beast from the moment it arrives" that way it doesn't mis-quote what I said, and means something different. Sorry I didn't eloquent clearly enough, but as we agree, and as this has little to do with 2017 Hornby, I suggest this is a good place to draw a line, be friends and move on.
  4. No misunderstanding here. But no GA class 71 announcements either from DJ.. to quote my own words from your own post Puzzled, unless my words weren't clear, but we seem to agree. The class 71 maybe an obscure battleground for competitors to duel, but at the end of the day, for us it's a hobby, for The manufacturers it's a business, that provides income to families. Companies do what they need to survive and take on competition, as modellers we may be uncomfortable with it in our own interests for the hobby, but 9am Monday morning many of us do the same in our respective jobs, I know Ive been some odd places, and take strange competition for what may seem pointless deals.
  5. The DJ models ones are pre-sold / crowd funded, with quite low limited editions for Hattons and Kernow, and probably some leftovers. Unless there's more up DJs sleeve we haven't heard about, yet....??? there's probably not going to be many 71s hitting the shelves from DJ, so the field may be open to Hornby to explore, indeed competitively it's in both their interests to swamp this one, as every sale is one less for the other manufacturer. If DJ runs some extras against Hornby it could be a very over supplied market for 71s, imho DJ should full speed to the 74, if Hornby decide the 71 is done they may do the same, that said there's not much in common between a 71 and 74.. the roof and both body sides are different, as is below the frame, and bogies..it's pretty much only the chassis / motor and cab ends that are the same..even the cab ends have pipes on and push pull equipment. The DJ one may be a rare beast from the moment it arrives, maybe Hornby is gambling on that ?
  6. You might be right about the colas 60, I predict :Colas 60 GBRF 59 or 66 DBS 67 Green 71 Blue 71 (E numbers) Blue 71 tops Rail freight 56 Blue 50 (named) Green 153 Green 07, Blue 08 Sentinel in green and red Not that I checked this link... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/117436-Hornby-advent-calendar/?p=2535324 Oh and 3 more BR green merchant navies :-)
  7. Wow, I must have good cabs then, I pay £40 from Sutton, or the x26 is a few £. Agreed rush hour is 2 hours from my place, but at 11pm it's 30 mins, I pass by HCP about half way in, as with all things UK travel related ...YMMV. Admittedly round here your cab is more likely to be a 1step from scrap Japanese car, rather than a new Mercedes C class. I'll let you know how I do tomorrow I arrive back in LHR at 3pm.
  8. £190 and 10 bids so far for this Peckett... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-NCB-0-4-0-INDUSTRIAL-PECKETT-NO-5-DETAILED-CUSTOM-WEATHERED-R3429-/371822923131?hash=item56925f8d7b:g:TE4AAOSw6DtYXr1d Someone's been busy..
  9. On closer examination of the picture... either the number is printed backwards, or the lion is the wrong way round... Now here's an enigma... as the production models the number is correct and the lion faces forwards... Maybe he has a unique rarity afterall... better triple the price before someone notices.
  10. Every time I goto colour rails website I see a nice blood and custard example of just this scenario on their home page and think that would be nice to recreate... http://colourrail.co.uk
  11. I actually hope they resist the temptation to duplicate the current production, but instead announce another 3 examples / liveries. (Red/Maroon would be nice) We've been down this road before, where the first batch sells out, so it's duplicated either a second run, or a renumber.. the second batch swamps the market, sticks forever and ends in the bargain bin: K1, J15, J50, B17, R3115 Exeter comes to mind. Another 3 new livery examples still provides a Peckett to the Peckettless but also has potential for some further sales to those from the first round, and so maybe a few first batch will creep back into the market, but overall "value" of the model is retained. It could also be beneficial for the whole Hornby brand, as at least to me it looks like anything they make will be "Asda'd" at some point... A few sell outs would help restore that image that "if I don't buy i'll miss out", rather than "if I don't buy it'll be cheaper later". Imho, The "value" of a Peckett isn't H&P, Dodo or MSc, but that it's a small well made rtr colourful industrial which modellers have been starving for.. Look at Dodo's namesake...Farm the success, don't Hunt it to death on the first go.
  12. So I was comparing my Ian Kirk Gresley articulated's next to my Hornby Gresley suburbans... Apart from removing a bogie, and drilling pinions for both coaches to sit on the other repositioned bogie, I really couldn't see much difference..looking at the body / roof etc these seemed identical, it didn't look like much more than removing buffers ? Anyone else looked / considered what looks to be an easy conversion to get Gresley articulateds, or is the Ian Kirk kit inaccurate ?
  13. 30073 had an extended bunker, which hasn't been modelled, as yet. Afaik all the green ones were uniquely different. 30064/72/73/75 have different alterations (72/75only wore green in preservation only, 72 having a unique bunker extension fitted in the 70's and went green in the 90's, 75 being a Yugoslav import). DS238 wainwright would be possible in BR dept service, but both ds233/8 have had extensive alterations in preservation too. I bought an additional 30064 thinking to do a renumber, as I saw them selling out, now I'm on the fence knowing if I did a renumber it'd be incorrect, if I did the mods it'd destroy the finish. I'm eagerly awaiting one of them too, the photos look fantastic !
  14. Reminds me of the Abu Dhabi history museum in Al-Ain. It showed the early history of the city, in colour photos !
  15. Personally people from their own country shouldn't make adverts about themselves as they market to an image they don't fully understand. It's better to have people from the host country input to it, as only they know what appeals best about the target country. I'd imagine Australians know as much about a Cornish fishing villages, as British people know about NSW fishing towns (FYI I can't think of any and I've been to Oz 6 times and sure they eat fish). So I am surprised theirs no website suggest to visit as a starting point for ideas, as the word Cornwall might be forgotten after a few minutes.. as would Manchester and Wales to those who don't know them... if the aim if to encourage me to travel further, then the starting point needs to be one I know, hence my admiration for the research the OP has made into their proposed trip !
  16. Hope jet lag doesn't get you, from bitter experience most NYC -U.K. Flights are an evening East Coast departure, followed by takeoff / meal / breakfast and landing... your lucky if you get 4 hours sleep, with time difference a 6.30am arrival off a 6.30pm US departure and a full day ahead of you before bed. Depending on time of year, the jet stream could strip up to 90mins off the booked arrival time too.. (I flew a UA 777 in 5hrs one January.. >100mph tail wind in the pilots own words " we were smokin" that night)..., though if you did chances are you'll do donuts round the boonies or wait on the tarmac for a gate...awake of sorts. You may want to check your hotel is good with an early check in (b4 2pm), but if your planning an action itiniery you need to be awake day 1.. otherwise days 2,3&4 are going to be run off adrenaline, dead mornings and wide awake nights. (I'm doing a US trip in Jan, and my own experience I'm routing back for an SFO-UK flight.. in 12 hours I should be able to get 8 hours rest !!!) Day 15/16, why not airbnb by hcp.. no need to lug or stash your luggage.. quite nice around their, booked taxi will cost around £20, and take around 20mins outside rush hour to the airport, you'll have no problem finding a nice restaurant for dinner. Indeed I might consider swapping days 5 & 15.. Windsor castle is close to the airport, , HCP and Portsmouth share Waterloo services and saves crossing London termini (1 hour there and there's a baggage storage there, or otherwise leave From Windsor and Elton riverside towards Clapham for a Portsmouth service..don't go back to Paddington for Portsmouth, but then you need to stash luggage..they won't let you take it in the castle ! Good dose of UK culture in that itiniery. Final tip, Heathrow alternates landings and take offs half way though the day, on a weekly basis (flight radar will show you which way there doing it that week).. If your landing mornings from the West.. an A seat gives you a view of Windsor castle, >F window will give you a view of londons water storage. if your landing from the East, an A seat might give you a view of HCP and if it's the northerly runway a view of Concorde, but a >F window seat will give you a full 360 of central London, starting at Canary Wharf and following a line just south of the Thames showing tower bridge, Tower of London, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham palace, Westminster and Hyde park..even Wembley on a clear day..., and if it's the southerly runway a view of Concorde too. Either way at 6-9am Heathrow is a cosmopolitan collection of large aircraft from across the globe on a scale of variety and quantity unmatched anywhere else In the world.
  17. I have heathrows pleasure on average once every two weeks.I find getting out early, never happens. The problem with Heathrow is it's too small for the demand, land early, there's no gate, no queue at immigration..but too many bags, even out of immigration there can be traffic queues or broken escalators. I find average is 45 minutes to clear immigration and be outside ready for onwards transportation, can be 60 has been 15, can even be 10 minutes for a domestic flight. TBH depending where you are going, the Heathrow express can be a slow option, Piccadilly line gets you to the west end in 45 mins and runs every 5 minutes, if you miss the Hex.. you've got a 15 minute wait followed by a 15 minute journey and a 15 minute taxi to the west end... that's by the time your done that's nearly £60 vs <£10 pp.. and your still lumping round luggage. Heathrow has its compensations though... it has a fantastic whisky shop with very good prices. Another tip.. fancy some duty free whilst in the EU.. try to fly via Switzerland.. no DF payable at EU airports (inc UK).
  18. The star in the reasonably priced car... the lack of an on show celeb means there's no distraction from the trio.Perhaps they could take something from spitting image, and have a celeb interview whilst in a taxi commute... (Spitting image had prince Charles giving interviews as a taxi driver)
  19. The extra driving wheel is grooved, so it gives you the option to run the A4 with or without a traction tyre.
  20. Peters spares have done exactly that, for example the brass motor housings for the T9, it's saved two of mine recently as they make brass alternatives.
  21. .I think there's a couple of other things in it that aren't right so continuing in there may be futile or frustrating now and later. So Unfortunately yes, try again with another. It's a nice loco though I have to give it that, enough weight I suspect it may out pull the peckett, which reminds me 2 more of them are coming today.. I'm gonna be poor at month end, but I'm not short of new toys :-)
  22. Unfortunately my 13xx is a failure. It's spinning on the axle and not moving. I just tried to dismantle it to have a look and it seems as if the cylinder block has quite a few cracks in the casting...! Add to that the screw one the cylinder has stripped and a piece of the casting disintegrated. With those pictures of interesting paint on the cylinders and cracks on mine I'm more that hoping its not M... Err bit stuck now.. Lovely loco, but not going to continue with this one.
  23. Heres a comparison of recent GW tanks... I was surprised how big a 14xx is and how small a 13xx is
  24. Just food for thought... Didn't realise how big a 14xx was... Also the variance between couplings, to me the 14xx is too high, the 13xx is too low... The bell is push fit :-)
  25. It's mini-magnets holding the door on, same as the J94. The instruction leaflet says it's designed for a sugar cube speaker in the bunker.
