  1. The headboard "Rail Operations Group" looks from the angle of the photo as if it could be close to being out of gauge. I do hope it wasn't and that it arrived safely at the end of the journey.
  2. My doctor said they had become available to anyone who asks in my area (Wandsworth) about 10 days ago. He had only had a few people ask as most don't know about it. I do know that different areas seem to have different rules on what a doctor can ask for.
  3. Just to let those in London know that Janes Trains will be open from Wednesday to Saturday, 1pm to 6pm. They do mention on the website that you will need to have a list of requirements and they cannot allow people to just browse for the time being. http://www.janestrains.co.uk/ Sadly as I travel by public transport I don't think I am allowed to go there even if I have a list!

Many years ago I had been helping operate a layout and late in the afternoon was asked if I could help the following day on a tramway layout which I had noticed had very few people watching while I was checking out how to operate it. The operator had three trams running on a 20 foot long street with a six foot balloon loop at one end. I asked why they had so few trams running and was told that it was not worth running anymore as not many people seemed to be interested! The following afternoon I had between 15 and 20 trams in action and a three deep crowd around the whole layout. When the owner came back he asked how I had got the crowd and I just pointed to his depot and said "I emptied the depot and am running everything I can." He was amazed and warmly thanked me. How you operate a layout is 50% of the battle in keeping people interested and that means having things not only running but running in an interesting way.
  5. The test was described to me by the doctor saying that it would test if my wife had had the virus or not. It did not show how much or if she had immunity and did not show if she had the virus at the time of the test. He called it an anti-body test and was very clear that the answer would be yes or no with nothing in between so far as whether my wife had been infected in the past.
  6. I would suggest you ask your doctor again. My wife was told by a nurse at the hospital when she went for a blood test, for something not connected with the virus, that she only had to ask her doctor for a CV19 test and one would be done. She phoned the doctor and they told her to collect the form that afternoon. She had the blood test done the following day and got the negative result two days later.
  7. My wife comes from Wisconsin and has walked with Black bears. She wishes to point out that running away from them will get you attacked and that the safest way is to slowly walk backwards facing them. Also avoid getting between mum and her babies as that is very dangerous.

  11. I am sadly a bad advert for marriage! My first last 16 months before we parted. Second time around it lasted 5 years but third time lucky as we celebrated 18 years in March.
  12. If you do get it as an on-line database you can put me down for a subscription! The massive job of creating the website could be split into smaller parts by starting with those manufacturers who are still producing new models and then add the rest at a suitable pace to keep people interested. Maybe split the current manufacturers by doing 4mm, then 2mm, then 7mm and then the other scales.
  13. Careful study of Realtime Trains is about the only way that I know of. The easy way is to have a friend who works on the test trains and can give you advance notice.

  15. They have always tried to include items that had been announced and were supposed to be available by the time the edition was published. This always means it is possible that an item is due for delivery a month before publication and then does not appear. That is why I always keep two or three editions on my book shelf and would love to see a 10th edition in the next 12 months. The 94xx is shown as being due 2016 in the 9th edition which was published in 2015 which seems reasonable to me even if it has since been delayed and is now not due until November 2020. If I were publishing today I would show it as due Nov 2020 and just have to hope it arrived as my crystal ball broke a longtime ago.
  16. The Track Atlas is in map form rather than just straight lines which can be useful. It does not always cover sidings apart from showing where they link to the main line so from that point the Quail line maps are slightly better but I find it is useful to have both and so have a full set of the Quail maps which I keep up to date as each is updated and also all three issues of the Track Atlas.

According to my copy of the 9th edition the previous editions were published as follows:- 1st - 1998 2nd - 2000 3rd - 2002 4th - 2004 5th - 2006 6th - 2008 7th - 2011 8th - 2013 9th - 2015 Since 2015 it has gone very quiet about a new edition and I fear that the time and effort may not be worth it for the number of sales. As @Phil Parker is the editor he may be able to tell us if another edition is planned.
  18. Children can be wonderful with comments like that! I remember a railtour in the mid 70s which went up the Heart of Wales line and we were stopped outside one of the passing loop stations as our train was too long for the loop so the passenger service coming towards us had to be in the loop before we went straight through. At one end of the coach I was in there was a family with a 5 or 6 year old girl who was very well behaved the whole day. Little girl was looking out of the window at a field which had around 25 cows. However, one of them was a bull and was on top of his latest conquest! Suddenly the little girl exclaimed in a high pitched voice which the whole carriage could hear "Mummy, what are those cows doing?" Collective smirks from the rest of the carriage with mother dragging little girl out of the coach with a very red face. I just wish I could remember which year it was so I could check sixbellsjunction for full details of the tour.
  19. My father was a radio producer for BBC Light Programme (Radio 2) and although he had a driving licence he did not have a car. He was very keen on a wide range of sports and we used the Underground and railways around London and further afield to go on trips to watch sport. I soon found the journeys as interesting as the sport when we arrived at our destination! I wold sit in a window seat facing direction of travel and at every junction I would want to know where the line that left ours was going to. My poor father often did not have any idea but now many of them are closed I have all the maps that would have been so useful back then. The longest journey we did was to Manchester about twice a year to see my Grandfather who was Dean of Manchester and I used to love the long journey in the early days with steam in full flight. One of my favourite memories is during the rebuilding with electrification in the Manchester area we got back to whichever Manchester station the trains to London were running from and due to the engineering work both the line to Euston and to St Pancras were leaving the same station in Manchester. Two London trains, one for each route were on either side of the island platform. The faster train was the one we were due to travel in until my father made the mistake of taking me to see the engines. The slower of the two trains was steam hauled via Matlock while the faster was diesel hauled running on the WCML. I was five or six at the time and there was no way we were going to travel on the diesel hauled train in my mind and I am glad to say that my father saw things my way so I can say that I used the Peak Rail line when it was a real mainline. Living in a house that backed onto the railway between Southfields and Wimbledon Park also helped and over the years I visited all the signal boxes between East Putney and Wimbledon Park which have now all vanished.
  20. Version 2 with the branch coming out of platform three and on an up gradient to Twig Street while the double track main line falls away into the fiddle yard. I have moved the bridge to give a longer run from Minories before the bridge and altered the fiddle yard as I have a sissors crossover made from peco points which I am going to use on my layout. Having looked at the layout again I would probably extend the Minories platforms about 8 inches and reduce the plain track run. EDIT I think maybe shorten the fiddle yard so the sidings are the same length as the platforms at Minories. That lengthens the run and gives plenty of room for an urban built up area between the two stations at the front and all the way along the back from the bridge to the end of Minories Station.
  21. If I was going to introduce a gradient then I would have Minories at 0 with the fiddle yard at -1 and Twig Street at +1 to give a bigger difference between the FY and TS.
  22. I had thought of the main line (Minories to Fiddle Yard) being run by DMU's and a steam service on the branch. The goods could be diesel or steam hauled.
  23. At the top of the page on a thread there are two boxes. One is Yellow and says "Reply to this topic", the other is red and says "Ignore this topic". They are probably in different places on a phone as the follow topic is at the top on a computer and at the bottom on a phone!
  24. The loco release on platform three is to enable goods trains to be shunted in that area using the platform as the run round for the loop and sidings. That in turn means freight can come from the fiddle yard be sorted at Minories and then some of the freight go forward to the single track station which has a loop and siding for the purpose. The brown blob in the middle of the layout is a bridge which I hope would help to hide the short distance between the two stations. I was in fact trying to see if it would be possible to have a Faller style roadway going the length of the layout but it would need an extra six inches to fit in.
  25. I agree about the fiddle yard entry although I have a specially built sissors crossover made from four Peco medium streamline points and a diamond which I am going to use in my mainline fiddle yard on my own layout.
