  1. Exploring the printer limits I remembered a project with printing the Neuburg station building at 58% for the Kato Nm so gave the Shoma body a go. TBH quite amazed at what it did. The handrails were perfect on printing, just me being a bit clumsy trimming off the support material. They are 0.29mm diameter. So - I think it is demonstrably able to print detail down to 0,25mm on a surface.
  2. A revival of this topic following the arrival and set up of a rather wonderful birthday present from SWMBO. Just need to remove the support material now.

Updated my photo albums before starting to pack up and crate the layouts. https://www.flickr.com/photos/148810032@N02/albums
  4. Love the way its going, for my money, albeit HOm rather than N, I put overhead wires up as it's an exhibition layout and you need them for the public. They are a proper PITA in many ways, track access for cleaning / maintaining, always in the way when you lean across for anything and heaven help you if anything ever derails. If I were doing this again for my own pleasure, I would go with the correct masts / spans and forget the wires.
  5. The Dynamis Ultima would cover those bases and a few others that you may explore in the future. It is older technology but perfectly robust. To make my life easy I chose to combine this with ESU badged accessory decoders as there is guaranteed comparability and the instructions all worked together. (SwitchPilot and SevoPilot) Historically it came in for some criticism as some domestic lighting could interfere with the infra red signal between handset and base. I personally only experienced that once when the layout was positioned under a large incandescent floodlight in an exhibition hall. That has largely been eliminated as modern lighting (LED SMD etc) is wavelength specific and there is no overlap into the IR spectrum which is what caused the interference. You will either love or hate the handset and if at all possible, I would recommend you try one in your hand before you buy. I personally love it - but that may be just years of use speaking! The only fault I have had with the handsets is wear and tear in the throttle joystick. After a few years hard use, they went back to Bachmann for replacement joysticks. As the handsets are battery operated (3 X AAA) they do need replacement from time to time and this is one instance where I have found the premium brands do last a lot lot longer than those from the pound shop - provided you remember to switch the handset off when you have finished using it....... The only limitation for sound locos is that Dynamis has a limit of 20 functions per loco - so if your chosen sound decoder has more than 20 functions, you may not be able to access all of them. Looking ahead, future things you may want to do, this set up will allow you to read and write CV's and fine tune the control of the locos. It is compatible with a number of computer control software options, essentially, those that interface with the ESU Navigator - which essentially is what it is. What it will not do is interface with train detection devices so full automation of your layout with this is just not going to happen. Hope that helps to some extent.

  10. No - CV112 to 256 not standardised, they are for manufacturer's use.
  11. Bought direct from Redutex a few times without any problem and used PayPal which avoids charges. As has been mentioned - things will change. Unless there is some kind of deal, WTO rules apply which for model railways is a zero % tariff BUT - VAT is a great complication. Its not completely clear what will happen after 1st January 2021. This is the bit that I think will substantially impact "For goods sent from overseas and sold directly to UK consumers without OMP involvement, the overseas seller will be required to register and account for the VAT to HMRC." I just cannot see outfits like Redutex and others wanting to be bothered registering with HMRC in the UK with all the business complication it will add. I suspect they will simply not ship to the UK after 1st January - if they are even aware of this change. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/changes-to-vat-treatment-of-overseas-goods-sold-to-customers-from-1-january-2021/changes-to-vat-treatment-of-overseas-goods-sold-to-customers-from-1-january-2021

Thanks for the comments - close up camera of the overhead power system makes me cringe though and one other gaff I am not going to mention! The SRS write up and photos are very good as well - saw you got a mention and picture too with Raetia Paul.
  13. Scotchloks are one alternative but higher rated choc blocs also give more space and easier for multiple wires.
  14. M-Machine Metals in Darlington are very good for materials, the other part of their business is reproduction panels for classic mini's. Helpful catalogue online. http://preview.m-machine.co.uk/CATALOGUES/metals catalogue.pdf

  16. Used Dynamis for years and never encountered that. Suggest you contact Bachmann Europe for technical support - use their enquiry form. I have found a guy called Roger Tozer there very helpful in the past.
  17. Don't over complicate it, its just a beam with a pulley hanging from it and a rope.

Following the traverser on 2013 and creating cassettes for train storage, I have revisited 1913 to add cassette storage on that layout as well. The period stock really does not like to be handled and this should substantially reduce that. First step was to add a demountable shelf behind the fiddle yard with a new point and spur of track which leads to the cassette locating point. Electrical connection is using audio jack plugs. The cassettes are plywood with closed cell foam to the inside. Dimensions are not as tall as 2013 as they don't have to accommodate pantographs but just slightly wider - no operational reason but I have three nice sheets of ply in stock that were just a bit thicker. These cassettes have been made to be used in either direction so trains can be run into the cassette, lifted out, turned and run in the opposite direction. The whole lot store in the Christmas Tree Box, and I can have 8 x 2013 and 6 X 1913 cassettes in one box for transportation. I suppose if I wanted to frighten myself, I would work out the insurance value for that. Hopefully, will cut down set up and dismantle time as and when we get back to exhibiting and limit the amount of handling the stock gets.

  20. Just curious, has anyone ever tried mixing some with fine iron filings?
  21. This was posted on Facebook the other day - from 1999 - just confirms how well you have caught the look of the place!
  22. At some point, it would be good to see a trackplan, love the different levels you have achieved.
