  1. Don’t do what I did, similar to your situation I had a layout for my son that got mothballed after about 2 or 3 years use. Move on 18 years I was ill and house bound (recovered now) so out it came to give me something creative to do, worked well. Anyway to the point I paid £15 for a Jinty non runner being a sparky I thought I could get it going. It was an old triang I didn’t pay enough attention to that, so the back to backs are troublesome. Then I could only get the motor running out of the chassis so had to ask for assistance on here to sort it. Stuart was diamond on that front. I’d save my money next time and buy newer. Even new new. Cheers Ade
  2. Thanks SS but no I think not, as this was one from memory that was imagined as a suggestion to another fellow Weber. It may well have been in a thread where off topic discussions start. I really can’t remember I can just remember thinking nice idea that bookmark it now I can’t find it. Cheers
  3. As above really been searching this area of the forum. I’m not 100% I even saw it here but from memory someone had come with a small docks or seaside estuary station with a siding or two. That then ran out over the water on piers for a viaduct. Or down a girder pier maybe. Along with some prototype photos of this structure I think? Ring any bells to anyone. Cheers Ade Edit 7th Sept edited topic title to place location and direction topic has become.
  4. Read those 8 pages enjoying a bit of S&D. Captured it rather well, on home turf for me I'm currently at lunch in work and located about 500yards from where the layout is set. Lived in Gurney Slade in the late 80s so much to like with your modelling and setting. My layout when it comes to fruition (if I ever get Jane finished!) will be S&D currently Masbury is my favoured location but we will see. Nice work Bill looking forward to the next update. Cheers Ade
  5. The new ballast colour is bang on Andrew. Cheers Ade
  6. Kevin read the whole thread bur cannot remember what you used for fence wire? Also what technique you use for getting it so life like in tension. The you and the loco driver? Figures on it by it look so life like stunning photos.Cheers Ade
  7. Nope haven’t got one of those, so will do. I just use emery cloth before hand and brush off anything with a soft bristle paint brush before the flux goes on. Tried more flux this evening and that went well. Bench Clutter! Everything to hand , it’s an old school desk I work at about 2ft square! Thanks for the tip. Cheers Ade
  8. Thanks for the comment David, probably all 3, perhaps I need to splash more flux around. Not sure heat is an issue as the middle box joint remelted one try so tried to be quicker in and out. I didn’t tin the two tube joints (well 4). Ie solder on the tube and solder on the inner faces. I just fluxed it really loaded the iron (after minimal solder didn’t secure well) and dropped it in without too much finessing around. The flux is http://www.hobbyholidays.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=PHOSFLUXsml I think to late now to desturb the house and go and look.Cheers for your observations
  9. Tony I believe I’m already subscribed over on Huckford Road. 1mm stone blocks that really is quite something. Cheers
  10. Up to date Tony it’s all coming on rather well. I do like those Cornish walls. Cheers Ade
  11. Haven’t secured any hair grips yet! Anyway 188 deg and 70 deg solder turned up off eBay JPL Models https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263270271848 Decent price and free delivery recommend them. So with no hair grips a Heath Robinson jig was made. The soldering is bottom of the class! But it’s there! All lines up reasonable next for the 70 deg to add the bits and pieces on to the cylinders. Cheers for looking in all comments welcome. Until next time. Cheers
  12. Like what you’ve done there Tony. Pretty good standard of weathering I’d say. Cheers Ade
  13. A pan scourer green side in a glass shallow jar full of water, dip in and.clean after every use. But the crucial bit I found was also tinning the tip after every use. Search Chadwick model railway on YouTube Charlie there did a video on soldering and linked to a good iron for about £16.50! Cheers Ade
  14. Cheers Horsetan funny enough went shopping for some today none found in this particular shop. They sell everything including great cheap modelling tools! Proper Job may only be local to me?I’ll look at Daves thread again sure he found some somewhere. Cheers Ade
  15. Goods shed coming along rather well. The corners need fetling on the plastikard joint but that’s on the list no doubt. Look forward to more. Cheers Ade
  16. Hi Tony thanks for the mention first I’ve ever received while reading a thread! Usually at the end of the current page where I post I’ve had an enjoyable read the author makes mention. I’ve been clicking on many posters signatures and finding good topics to follow, that’s how I found yours. I always like to read a good topic from start to end when it’s a thread I’m enjoying. I should of kept a record of all the threads I’ve read start to finish! Dent was probably the biggest. By the way “Dent, KY2, ANTB, DitD etc” DitD escapes me care to enlighten me? Enjoying Helstonish and I like the scenery method with the gardeners fleece as a cover with the tin foil under. I may try that when I move on to my layout when loco and stock building is completed. Keep it up and posting on here I’ll keep reading and liking currently on page 7 of 13. Cheers Ade
  17. Bit of a learning curve going on at the mo. Tried laying on detail layers on the front of the cylinder/steam chest. Tinned each layer first with 145 deg solder as that’s all I had and the first layer was fine but the second layer, even though I tried to be quick mellted the first layer. I had it nearly there but then it wasn’t level so had to go in again and a mess ensued! I kinda knew it would. I’ve now ordered s9me 70 deg and some 188 deg to experiment with! So brass fetling was put on hold. Given the hot day it’s easier to set up to do some more on the meat van under the living room fan. Buffer beams finished and glued on and inside painted out as you can set the doors to be open. Thanks for looking in . Cheers Ade
  18. Blimey Charlie, I stand corrected. Inches not centimetres right that’s chunky.Cheers Ade
  19. Inch thick! Are you sure that makes the legs 4 inch square by comparison. Fence posts! Have another measure. Needs more horizontal bracing or many more legs unless it is an inch thick IMHO. Cheers Ade
  20. Enjoyed reading the 18 pages so far. Looking forward to more. Subscribed. Cheers Ade
  21. Liking this modular layout. Good stuff. All coming on rather nice. Cheers Ade
  22. Thanks for the info. Cheers Ade
  23. Looking good John nice work, is that a tin of Halfords etch primer or something more? Cheers Ade
  24. Looking good Andrew I can easily recognise it from my youth. Cheers Ade
  25. Those are OSB or sterling board better than chip board but do warp in the wrong conditions as does any sheet material I guess. Plenty of bracing required for it not to end in tears in a few years time. You maybe going open baseboards in which case all will be well by the very nature of that construction. Looking good though moved on heaps from a junk filled shed! Cheers Ade
