  1. That’s as maybe Peter but you then get used to it, so it’s just a matter of course, as for us here it takes us by surprise and therefore like snow here in the south west it entitles us to have a moan about it! If it was an every summer occurrence we would all be investing in air conditioning! Do you have air con or are you used to it?Not sure it’s nice modelling thanks anyway. Cheers Ade
  2. For the pvc pipe you need http://www.discount-electrical.co.uk/section.php/107182/1/sealants---adhesive-for-round-pvc-conduit welding glue pvc conduit as we use in the electrical trade or similar in plumbing trade wil stick it 100% partly melts the two pieces being joined. Note with strength you can get it apart again up to about 2mins after that forget it! No link with the company above but your local screwfix or Electrical or plumbing wholesalers will stock it. Cheers Ade
  3. Still to hot to do anything 32.6 in the shade and 29.9 inside today! So trying not to waste a whole weekend I set up under the living room ceiling fan, I bought some plastikard in Bideford from a lovely model shop there. I don’t recall the name but 2nd hand gear was well below the prices of my local shops. I set to scratch building the missing buffer beams, a first in plastic and harder than using brass I reckon. Anyway close up the results are poor but a bit of filler may improve things. Trying to keep cool Big news on Jane this turned up while I was away on holiday, just need to source some phosphorus bronze wire for pick ups and some pcb board, though we have loads of old boards from alarm panels at work I can recycle for that. Back on the brass scratch building soon! Cheers for looking in.
  4. I see http://www.crphillips-models.co.uk/index.html recommended a few places most recently here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/115550-southern-railway-loco-a-z-churminster-stowe-magna/. Search Chris Philips on Tony’s thread you’ll see how often he’s mentioned! No personal experience of him myself. Cheers Ade
  5. Well not a lot going on here at present as one at home the weather has been brilliant to good to be modelling really. Two I’m away on holiday better than being abroad! But some modelling is being done took a few Airfix kits away I won on eBay pre 1972 decimalisation! 46 years old at least. 1st one buffer beams missing and one buffer, need to scratch build something for those but nothing with me to do it yet. The meat van is ready for the roof but needs paint and lead first as well as the buffers and couplings. Bought some wagon wheels also from eBay advertised as probably metal, I took a punt but they we’re metal axles and plastic wheels they would have been better than the Airfix offering but we’re to wide pin to pin. So the Airfix wheels are under it for now.
  6. Nice work chuffing, clever photography or luck of the light they don’t look to bad. I dare say they could do with a bit of weathering though in real life. Like your cabinet routed groves for rails, personally not seen that before. Cheers Ade
  7. Some lovely modelling going on there, and I also like what we can glimpse of the shed and yard. Ash and weathering looks spot on. Cheers Ade
  8. Nice stuff going on here, enjoyed all to date subscribed for the updates to completion. Cheers
  9. I echo what David says. I suspect the coupling rods willl be predrilled for centres? If not that’s the key after squareness of the chassis. Making sure the coupling rods match the axle centres. See my thread in my signature I had lots of advice on that although I was scratch building. You may want to invest in a jig? But a perfect flat surface to build it on is key. I chose an off cut of shower faced ply as that’s what I had to hand, others use glass I’ve seen. Good luck an enjoy it very rewarding. Cheers Ade
  10. Cheers Dave I did actually work it out by putting the Verniers on them to tell which did what and refering back to your thread. So you did a good job. I’m toying with a solid brass part to make them, I have something in mind, formally a 2amp socket earth terminal. Not gone as far as the shed yet though to see what I have.Cheers Ade
  11. Had quite a few hours on the model yesterday but not a lot to show! Thinking about setting the cylinders out I figured I ought to add the crosshead and slidebars and the slidebar attachment plate no idea what it’s proper name is! Dave had a P4? one on the etch he gave me I thought I could use that but after removal from the etch it was way to small so have to scratch build that. Then I removed the crossheads Dave made them of 4 laminations! Oh dear I looked at them for a good quarter of an hour I have to scratch one set anyway so I gave tha a miss for now, so darn small. So went on to do more on the cylinder block. Filed down the crankpin and nut on the front as far as I dare, offered Up the folded block then I realised the holes for the pistons were at different widths each side so a new hole required but very close to the old one. So laid it on some aluminium tweezer handles (solder won’t stick to aluminium) and soldered in the bad hole. Then drilling the new hole first with a pilot drill the solder came out! Never mind job done and the follow up drill had its guide. Soldered up the rear half of the cylinder block. Then drilled it for attachment to the footplate. I’ll have to devise how the smoke box also attaches. Then screwed it on and temporary lined up the front plate of the cylinder block and the piston tube. So the hole middle of the frame spacer is one I drilled as the instructions said to early on may be I can relocate for the smoke box screw and nut. But after this mock up the piston centre’s were to low, should be roughly centre of the wheels.. so I filed deeper the slot the block goes in. Then offered it back and got it there abouts. Then made a start on the front plate the bad hole also had to be moved and then started cutting the covers for the front plate to add them on before I solder it in place. Cheers for looking in.
  12. I strongly agree with what Scott says I was already to turn my shed into a railway room, but Ill health hit me (almost had half a day out with the undertaker!) so the spare bedroom was given over to it, just so I could do something and keep my mind going in difficult times. It has proved a great success as you say I’m part of what’s going on in the house and my wife and daughter take an interest and pop up to see what I’m up to. It’s warm to. Good advice I’d say. But I know I’m probably lucky to have such a room. All the best with the search Jeff.
  13. Took a plunge and read this thread right through admittedly skimming through the fist 200 pages as you may have seen from the likes and craftmanship clever responses. It’s coming on great Chris and the Prototype is a part of the world I love. In fact a week Monday sees me a Mrs Ade down to Padstow on holiday. The camel trail will be enjoyed on 2 wheels on many occasions. I’ll be looking out for stuff now I’ve learnt a bit reading these pages. Love trying to find stuff still left if you know where to look after all these years. Keep up the good work I look forward to many more updates. Cheers Ade
  14. Blimey ever saw that coming one minute the station building was coming along nicely next a bomb has dropped! I don’t frequent the lounge so perhaps there was clues there. Best of luck for what’s next .
  15. Cheers all above for your tips, Horsetan I like what you say as my iron is bog standard 30w to.
  16. Thanks Horsetan, I did consider that but thought by doing that I would un laminate the rods and end up in a mess! I’ll try one and get in and out quick with the iron. Cheers
  17. So after I said I’d given up shortening the bushes post #88 after many different attempts at it. Peter said stick um in the connecting rods and carefully file them down! Well Peters last post convinced me to look at it again. I knew they looked wide. So duly did as Peter suggested. Gone in a bit to much maybe on 2, but enough brass still proud I reckon to keep them. Before and after. Does look better, now need to know if I pinch up the nut on the bushes or leave slightly slack and loctite it. Route to goal, job to see it filing bushes! Filed the rim of the bush down to. The laminating of the rods left a bit to be desired! The bosses particularly show gaps where no solder has oozed out is there some filer or something that will sort that? Cheers Ade As always all comments gratefully received.
  18. Progress Jon Progress, not sure on the tank is the plastisruct to thin and flimsy? The coal wagon looks like a great start, plastikard and Mek? Cheers Ade
  19. Love it coming on nicely. Craftsmanship Clever! Cheers Ade
  20. Here’s Jon’s link. Great prototype image loads of details full of atmosphere. Photographer and copyright unknown.
