  1. Hi Ade,having done greasing fish plates and oiling point at Chasewater,I can tell you that the grease is black, but doesn't run,so tends to stick where it's put,on the inside faces and on the sloping faces that mate up to the underside of the rail head.Otherwise light or dark rust, depending on how old they are, mostly rail colour. Hope this helps, atb Phil PS next time I go I'll take some photos.
  2. Great news Ade,good luck moving forward, onward and upwards. atb Phil
  3. Wow Andy, you've made my day!An excellent move,I was wondering how much the new lot would have cost you.Probably both arms and legs, the way prices of every thing keeps shooting up. atb Phil

  5. Also,page51 in Michael Messenger's "The Culm Valley Light Railway"it says ; Reverting to the tradition of using carriages from the minor Welsh railways taken over by the GWR ,early in 1950 the elderly GWR carriages were replaced by two ex-Barry Railway coaches. The inference here suggests that the aforementioned clerestory coaches lasted till then. Hope this helps, atb Phil.
  6. Andy, your railway photos always have that 'presence',for want of a better word.keep up the good work! atb Phil
  7. Hi Amanda, further to this, the Hemyock branch used a clerestory brake coach until at least 1938 (that's the date on the photo I turned up) and used 2 ex Barry Railway coaches up to 1962,after which a couple of LNER suburbans were used. The Barry Railway coaches were gas lit,as the train didn't go fast enough to charge the batteries. All things considered,it wouldn't be unexpected if the clerestories lasted another 12 years or so,Hemyock being so far out in the sticks as to be out of sight and mind of officialdom!

  11. I think it needs a driver, and certainly needs "knocking about".In my experience forktrucks seldom look pristine for long, especially "common user"ones found on dock sides or timber yards.(or builders merchants come to that). atb Phil
