  1. I hope this isn't a completely stupid question, but how long would have Gresley coaches retained their teak livery after British Railways came into effect and repainted them. I bought some sets at good price from the big box store, I can repaint them but don't have the ability to reline and number them. Even if I do it could Canada Post is so slow I would end up losing interest. I would rather improve the existing teak finish into something more accurate. Thanks for any information. MJ.
  2. I really like the Electrotren 0-6-0 saddle tank, and would love to find one and Anglicize it as you have done. They just seem to be impossible to find now. Oh well, maybe one will turn up.
  3. Thanks to everyone who has posted on here. If I can achieve half as much detail as the pictures on here I would be happy! Hopefully I can get some modelling done soon, it will be something small and worth posting on here. I can honestly say going through the106 pages I am left in awe!
  4. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I was able to get them apart by putting them under warm running water and easing them apart one at a time. I then stood them up to dry in one of my girlfriend's old hair brushes. Once dry I wiped them gently with some disinfecting wipes, then flattened any that had curled by putting them on my desk in a stack with a piece of waxed paper between each print then put a piece of glass on top with some weight on it. After a few hours they were as good as new for the most part. There are couple that have some damage but I should be able to fix that once scanned. Now I just have to figure out the scanner function on this new all in one printer. I hope the resolution is as good as it supposed to be! Thanks again. MJ
  5. Oh I'm A dumb*ss!! That didn't even occur to me!!! Most of the negatives are still around. I'll be able to get the prints that have been chewed on reprinted.
  6. Hi Spikey, They are photographic prints, all colour, and most from the 90's. Thanks.
  7. Hello all. While I was having a good clean out of boxes, I found one with a lot photographs in it, a lot of which were of railway interest. Quite a few were stuck together and judging by the amount of mouse droppings I can guess why (yuck!). I wondered if anyone had any suggestions for separating them without ruining them as I would like to get them scanned. I don't want to just try easing them apart as they are as I'm sure I'll end up regretting it. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks. MJ.
  8. I really must apologize for my for what can only described as a tantrum the other other other day. I shouldn't expect instant responses to questions, I've had nothing but help from any questions to I've asked on this forum. I was In a bad place mentally. We all have lives and don't spend 24 hours a day on here. If Andy Y or if any other of the moderators want to remove me from the forum I will understand.
  9. Thank you for the video links Chris, (now I know what I will have in my sandwich with my lunch!). I'm going to try a few techniques and see what I'm happy with. I really don't care if they're 100% accurate models, I just don't them to look so train setish. I seem to have enough to practice on!! Thanks again. MJ
  10. I must apologize to everyone here. I was in a very bad place, for reasons I won't, go into. This is a great forum that I have always received nothing but help with. Again my apologies. MJ (Mark))
  11. Thanks for the input. I guess I don't fit I don't fit into the elite for asking a question.
  12. Having just found this thread, I was wondering what varnish/finish anyone could recommend for improving the look of the coaches. I just bought three sets of three coaches (the price was too good to pass up but three sets? what was I thinking?). they look fantastic but the finish looks too flat, I imagine they would have been more glossy. Ideally I would like something I could airbrush on because I wouldn't want to ruin the teak finish. Thanks. MJ. Mark. (Sorry to go by MJ, but there are too many Marks in this family!!)
  13. Thanks for the like in my Tri-Ang water tower page.  if I could ask a question? if the colour is just about right, what could I use to give it the varnished metallic look? Railway modelling seems to be a dying/nerdy  hobby in this country. It seems to be a do what you can with what you've got culture.

If the colour is way off please say so.

    Thanks.

    MJ.

Are Humbrol paints available in BC?  If so, get the Metal Cote Gunmetal.  My tin has got 27004 stamped into the lid, which I assume is Humbrol's reference number.

If it's not available in Canada it's quite definitely not worth the astronomical costs that would undoubtedly be involved in buying it from the UK.  It might be worth trying to mix your own version.  Metalcote is a thick black enamel paint with a lot of ultra-fine metal fragments in it, not unlike a small-scale, brush-on version of the metallic aerosol paints you can get from car shops.  I have to stress that I've not tried this myself so it might not work, but if I was to try and make my own I'd use some ordinary black enamel, a lump of steel and a small, fine file.  It would undoubtedly take some time and effort to create enough metal filings to have the necessary effect so I'd advise wielding the file first before adding the small amounts of paint needed to mix with it.  Some experimenting would undoubtedly be needed and even then it might not work, but it's the best I can think of.

If it does work, it is particularly useful for weathering.  The approved method with Metalcote is to paint it on, let it dry then polish it using a cotton bud to create a metallic sheen.  I use it on loco brake gear, footplates and so on but I've seen experts use it to create that silvery sheen that old, unpainted wood has.

Having written all that, it belatedly occurs to me that US modellers are streets ahead of us in the UK when it comes to weathering techniques and materials, so they have undoubtedly got an equivalent to Metalcote that is every bit as good, if not better and - more to the point - far cheaper and easier to obtain in Canada.  Take a look at some of the modelling tutorials that are available on YouTube (Some are so bad you'll find yourself staring at the screen in slack-jawed disbelief.  Others are so good you will find yourself gaping in awe!) and see what hints and tips you pick up there.  And dont confine yourself to the railway modelling videos.  The wargamers and military modellers can teach us a lot.

With regard to the brick arch on your water tower, it's fine as it is but would be improved further with a tiny, tiny hint of dark blue being added to a top coat of Metalcote.

Good luck, and let me know how you get on.

      Mike

Many, many thanks for the response and tips.  I have to take the ferry over to Campbell River tomorrow. The paints I use come from the dollar store, equivalent to the pound shop, but their range of acrylic colours is amazing and at $2 for a 118ml bottle I don't mind experimenting with mixing of colours.  There is an automotive aftermarket shop as well so I will pop in and see if they have anything like metalcote.

The ferry is walk on and walk off for free, sometimes there is a bit of a wait as if there are whales etc. in Discovery Passage they won't run.  The ferries are run by the indigenous population and have a deep respect of all the marine life that use the passage. A lesson to be learned by all I think.

Many Thanks again for the information and YouTube tips.

Hi Mike just a quick update on the engineers blue brick. It doesn't show up too well in the photograph, there is a slight metallic effect so I can live with it. I guess rule number 1 applies. It's obviously is a work in progress and I get a chance to work on things when I'm not stuck in a hospital ward!

  14. Well, It seems like the forum is saying the file is to big at 4.4MB when the biggest file allowed is 10MB. I know I'm a computer idiot, but I don't know what the farzkingfardwarks I'm doing wrong!
  15. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm finally working on it again after a stint in hospital. I'm trying to get the colour of the blue brick right, it looks too dark. There isn't too much to go on on this side of the pond. it's case of experimentation as no no-one can ship paint here any more .
  16. Sorry, I'm not sure why the images are reversed. i'm a computer idiot when it comes to this stuff!
  17. I think this is the correct place for this post. I dug out one of my Tri- Ang water towers to try to improve it. The other one seems to be in perfect original condition so I will leave it alone. This is how it came out of the box, complete with a bad attempt at weathering when I was much younger.... SCAN0001.PDF After a little work i replaced both window bars, they didn't turn out well as expected. They'll be facing the back of the layout so probably never seen. The next step is a clean up and a coat of red oxide primer. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what colours it should be painted? I'm assuming the area around the windows should be red brick, but if anyone has suggestions the would be appreciated! Thanks. Mark.
  18. Rob, I took the plunge and ordered the kit. I hope it's as good as it looks! Mark.
  19. Thank you both for your responses. Autocoach , I had completely forgotten about the BRMNA, I really have to start looking at them again. Rob, that link to Wizard models has exactly what I'm looking for!! Many thanks! I will have to take a good look through the rest of their web site when I'm home from work (or take a sneaky peek at work ). Thanks again to you both. Mark.
  20. Hi brossard, I've just found this thread. I have one of these in the early BR crimson/cream livery, (I think it might be a Lima model), I don't know if they ever carried that livery (rule number1 applies). What you have done looks fantastic! I'm just at the point of trying some weathering again, so I'm not that brave to attempt what you have. Thanks for posting this I feel my modelling MoJo coming back as I'm trying to improve an ancient Tri-ang water tower, sad I know. Mark.
  21. I hope this is the right place to post this. I'm looking for a safety valve cover for an Airfix 14xx and tank top fillers for a start. Does anyone know who can supply these that will ship overseas at a reasonable price? I don't mind if it's a complete detailing kit as I have several now but want to improve what I can on my original. It's purely for sentimental reasons. I did find a supplier of many detailing parts, but at £40.00 shipping to Canada for a few bits my jaw hit the floor then the basement!! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Mark.
  22. Hi David; Thank you for your work at posting everyday, I appreciate them . I'm sorry I don't comment very often. Is it just me or does the HST (as I knew them), class 43 look completely ruined. I'm not sure if it's the livery, the treatment to the headlights, or both. It just seems to have lost the classic, timeless look it has always had. Maybe it's just rose covered glasses and age! I just saw Andrew P's comment above. I hope everything is OK too. Mark.
  23. Thanks for all the information. I think I'll try my hand at some sympathetic weathering...
