  1. In a short period of time in the garden today with a cuppa I saw fledglings of - Robin, Mistle Thrush, Blackbird, Starling, Sparrow. And a few evenings ago while working in the workshop a Bat flew in circled and went straight back out, didn't pass comment on the Obelisks I was making for madam although I supsect she sent it to spy on progress.
  2. I thought it was ok. . . . hang on . . I was watching the old one's on Dave..
  3. It wasn't Peterborough/Fletton but on the original loop line (this is a real brain freeze subject!). The GN had a few brickworks along the route which they purchased when building the original line and they used them to supply the route to London. Sandy for instance shares the same station design as Spilsby, and the bricks it is made of are not local to here but are lincolnshire in look and feel, their colour is bright yellow but within a short period of time they were near black as they absorbed all the pollutants in the air. The earliest photo's in the 1880's (just 25-30 years after opening) show them as dark/sooty in colour.
  4. The GN owned their own brickworks on the original line which supplied the majority required. For the life of me I can't remember it's location!
  5. Looks fine, it could have an issue if the traverser was fully extended and people lean on it, but what board wouldn't. Worse case I'd put a shelf below at the rear and that would gives some low down weight.
  6. Your chainsaw was certainly sharp there........... Looks good, I don't think you can get any heavier weight runners than the ones you've used unless they come as a 2 part which is no good as they've too much play.
  7. They were Stirlings 766 class, 766-70, 821-830, 931-940 were built between 1889 and 1893 and the last 4 with short tanks 941-944 were built in 1895. I'm not sure about LNER classification as only 12 were on the books on 1/1/23 and the last went by Feb 1927 Jason has done the long tank version as it was the most common (and the one he wanted) mine will become 939 which ended as a Peterborough engine, there were plans to do the short tank but it's more complicated than just shortening them as there are many other differences.
  8. On the subject of CDK/PDK kits there are some things happening, You have to look elsewhere in the hobby to see that there are lots of modellers doing things for themselves How about this, was delivered just last Thursday, it's a 3D print of a Stirling G1. Detail is excellent. To make the variants within the class (apart from the short tank version) there is a sprue of the condensing gear as well as the chimneys The cab is an insert so can be painted and further detailed if required before fitting Body with the cab insert So how did this come about? JCL (of this parish) wanted one and says he is not an acomplished kit builder but knows his way around a keyboard, so the logical step is to use the skills you know you have. It ended up as a group project with Jason, Mike Trice, Allan Sibley, Steve White and myself (about .00002% input) as we're all members of the GN society and want things that are just never going to be produced in RTR or even kit form. And there is more to come.
  9. East Beds has had these on "Sutton" for 20+ years, they are reliable but the contacts do need to be kept clean. we use an extremely fine emery which is slid back and forth between the contacts just 2-3 times and that does the trick. And yes they do "ping" and can go some distance.
  10. I'll see if I can find a note of all the corrections for you.
  11. Can we cut the link in post #1770. It just screwed up Google chrome on the PC
  12. Tut Tut Jason.....if only you looked at the membership list I go to all the trouble of providing....
  13. Good post, picking up the part in bold that's exactly what has happened with early GN, you can't buy it so you've got to make it. http://www.shapeways.com/product/X9XYWMANW/gnr-g1-0-4-4t-4mm-scale?option=59831257&etId=88855116&utm_source=automated-contact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=payment-received&utm_content=7
  14. I love the laser cutter but looking at the paving with a builders eye it's too perfect. I've got some pictures fro the 1880/90's of Sandy which is barely 40 years after the opening of the GN and the platforms are already showing wear and tear. I'd be tempted to take a scalpel and scraper to it and really "distress" it, also can you laser cut the ends to create a tooth like joint?
  15. Spilsby shares the same design of station building with Sandy. . . . . just thought I'd share that nugget of information.....
  16. Reminds me of a River boat trip in Germany a couple of years ago, a fellow passenger was an ex-RAF pilot and I was talking to him about a book I was reading about Ark Royal and the Buccaneer. I said "did you ever fly one" he said he had and they were excellent, he did say that they couldn't fly themselves though. When I queried this he said that he ejected after a problem and it didn't fly for long after his input was taken away. I did point out to him that it was possibly his input that cause the problem and he replied "the fireball dealt with that evidence" after the RAF he went on to fly for Thomson/Tui....
  17. If you're thinking of who I'm thinking. I think they're still following the yellow brick road to the high court....doesn't take a rocket man to figure out it's a waste of time and money...but at the end of it he'll still be standing.... The G1 is ordered.
  18. Coming from Sandy we don't actually know which Kingdom we were in, at school we were taught that the line was a bit "fluid" in this area and that we could be either in Danelaw or Mercia, We do know that in Roman times Sandy (Sandae) was an important stopping point which subsequent digs have proven and that English Heritage cannot explain the many hillforts on the escarpment overlooking the common (where the ECML is now) Mind you, it could explain the rivalry between Biggleswade and Sandy...... I do know we are not "The North" .....we don't have the speech impediments...........
  19. I'll name them for a fee. I'll order mine in the morning.
  20. I did wonder that but was told that there were 2 versions and both were seen east of Bedford.
  21. I've heard this before but there are some stories locally about a "ghost train" that ran a few times, turns out it was this and because of the tyres was very quiet. I have seen some film about 8-10 years ago of it running East of Bedford at a film show by Frank Banfield, IIRC the film was from the East Anglian Film Archive so you are fully justified in running one. There were a few other railcars than ran on the Oxford to Cambridge Neither do I, The Father of 31A who is also resident here was my French teacher (and German for a while) quite how he didn't start using weapons on us we'll never know.
  22. That will work fine, I find that when a kit contains enough parts for different variations that's when I miss things, I spend so long making sure the right chimney is with the correct dome etc that I miss something really obvious! Make something right first time. . . . .what is this concept? is it actually achievable.........not in this house
