On the theme of more haste less speed, I find that building a test rig for pointwork, and making sure it is satisfactory before putting it on the layout, helps with progress, there's nothing worse than trying to fettle trackwork once it's laid.

You are negating the benefit of PB by putting brass in the way, and then there's the solder contact as well.
To spread the contact area of wire pick ups, just put a loop on the end of the wire.
