Sorry Ian, I confused you with 11B for some daft reason. 11B had bad toothache yesterday!!

  2. Mention is often made of the generic basic 'shelf stacking job in a supermarket'. I've been looking for jobs for five years and I've never seen an advert for one. Can someone tell me where this generic role gets advertised? :-S

Stationmaster: Nearest normal Tesco is about 90 minutes commute away. Also, 20 pages of vacancies doesn't mean they're near me or are viable jobs for me. Looking closer, all near me are at small Tescos and are part-time. I need full-time income in order to get completely off benefits so I can rent a place to live.

Russ: I've thought about HGV, however, it costs a fair packet to get trained and go through the test and I have no money whatsoever. Also, it's not a job I'd stay in, and most employers will needle me on the likelihood that I'd go back to computer coding. I can lie, but my work history is what it is and tells the story.

Mike: I'd do the trolley work no problem, but I don't know that I have the right personality to do till work. I'm very much a practical technical person and not very good at 'people'.

Not oh dear, not for me. It's my go to skill, one I can do almost with my eyes closed. I need to move off it sooner though, there's just so little demand for it these days. I hope at some point I can manage to get HTML/CSS/Javascript/PHP/C++ trained into my head.

  11. RMweb has been a source of comfort during times of stress for me, and no doubt will continue to be so in the future. But... there are days when I just really want to go away and never come back.

Thanks all for the kind words. It's fair to say that there's more to my situation than just RMweb, but I just sometimes have a day where something gets to me. But hey ho, I'll muddle through.

Oh, and my hours have been changed. Previously I was 'working to live' and got to do lots for myself, now I seem to be 'living to work' and have no time for anything I enjoy...........what do network rail pay these days?!

That's one of the things that I think is really wrong with the system. My wife works her arse off in a kitchen but gets less a month than her dad who's on benefits. Crazy.

CK: Thanks. I'll try and code up a banana or pasty or two ;)

HB & DM: Native. I'm coding on Linux from Bjarne Stroustrup's 2014 book 'Programming: Principles and Practice using C++'

      HeeleyBridge

Nice. I hope you get to grips with it. I started out with C on a Commodore 64 many moons ago, but it was quicker back then to go straight to assembly language. On PCs I started with Borland then on to Visual Studio. Don't do much these days though I have a few bits I should update, just to keep my hand in.

I've literally only just started it, but it's very much a book to learn from, as it underpins a course at Texas A&M university. The other books of BS's tend to be more reference than teaching
