  1. It's The Last Journey - available on DVD.
  2. At the City of David (3443/3720).
  3. Very nice! I've got no further than chopping up the chassis for mine so far. It won't turn out nearly as well. Did you add any extra pick-ups? I ask because once you disconnect the tender, there are pick-ups only on the two pairs of driving wheels, which doesn't seem enough.
  4. Here's an idea: Earl of Berkeley as built, nameplates, green, shirtbutton, no. 3217.
  5. It is a little beauty, though, isn't it, Miss P? I'm very, very tempted, although what I'd really like is a green shirtbutton version. Perhaps, however, somebody might be persuaded to commission of the prototype Tre Pol and Pen. It is, after all, a very Cornish name.
  6. In that year (1921) one of the players was Eric Blair (George Orwell), who, though lacking fitness, might have qualified for two of those epithets.
  7. Ms Bennett's article links to another: Thomas the Tank Engine sexist, hierarchical: study Reminds me why I stopped reading the Grauniad.
  8. Thank you. Fortunately, I've already paid for Lode Star (I think it was about a year ago - still, everything comes to him who waits!)
  9. When I looked up the link I got this: Which seems quite a good statement of my modelling abilities!
  10. I can't help feeling that the GWR would have preferred Constantinople to Istanbul.
  11. Especially without the DCC chip!
  12. Surely the red lamp could be on either end, depending which way round the van was coupled to the train. I think it's been established on another thread that they weren't regularly turned, and so would be run in both directions.
  13. He's lucky it's only his shoe that was removed. And what Mark said.
  14. I've just come across this thread again, and am amazed not at the atmospheric quality of the modelling, but the wit; I love the advertisements for the cigarettes that stink, and for M. Pujol and his unusual wind instrument!
  15. "The Last Journey" (1936) was filmed on the Great Western, and mentioned on the old forum. A shiny new DVD of it has just popped through my letter box, courtesy of those nice people at Play.com. There are clips on youtube to whet your appetite:
  16. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Great-Western-Railway-/300860991730?pt=Antiquarian_Books_UK&hash=item460cb668f2 I don't think the letter is addressed to Winston Churchill.
  17. Churchdown? Double track main line (quadruple from wartime to the sixties).
  18. A few days ago I received an e-mail from him to confirm that my online order (placed very early) had been processed. If you ordered online and haven't been contacted, it might be worth checking.
  19. Hard to think of a translation that won't be blocked by the forum software. How about "Fat Controller" without the last two syllables?
  20. Is there a UK supplier for Joe's Decal and Detail Remover? It looks good stuff.
  21. One of my local freebie rags this week had a headline story about a Darby and Joan club row that had resulted in one of the members being banned. It reminded me why I don't usually bother to read them.
